The NHL can't just change the rules. Everything must be collectively bargained. The NHLPA would never agree to it without massive compensation.
Yup. Want to remove the guarantees? Everyone's salary basically doubles to compensate. It's not sustainable for a league that doesn't have the tv money the other leagues do.

In all likelihood, he’s gonna have to play his way out of this one. The only team who might consider him at that number, could be Florida, because they know he fits there. Even at that, just can’t see Calgary using that slot for that many years. Too many things change.

Currently on pace for 46 points, and has a 55pt pace (per 82) since leaving Florida (105 games). You could potentially argue that's worth 5.250 right now - but for 7 more years after this one just looks god awful.

Don't see it. Player is already in decline. Maybe (and that's a real maybe) he might be worth it in the short run. But who wants to be paying anything like 5. 2 for post 35 for a player that might be (and likely will be ) already done as any kind of offensive player.

If Calgary retains 3 million, take Gallagher in trade and gives us their first Habs could do it. Sounds steep, first 3 years are but we essentially taking on back four years of Huberdeau contract for a '24 first pick.

"Flames have to retain x million to move that contract"
Flames aren't retaining anything for 7 years, it just doesn't happen.
"Well then there is no way they are trading him"
We're aware, thank you.
"That contract sucks and can't be bought out"
We're aware, thank you.

That's a rip off.

I'd rather just watch Gallagher fail to skate, fire muffins and bald along side him than have Huberdeau.

Huberdeau needs to play in an east to west open offensive system to succeed. And eventually the Flames will trade him for pennies on the dollar, if not outright cap dumps to some team that understands that and will see him go back to putting up a PPG+.

The Flames won’t retain that kind of money. What do you think would happen to Conroy if he retains, deals Huberdeau for next to nothing, then watches him return to form? Goodbye GM career.

Huberdeau is Treliving’s legacy. Conroy doesn’t need to own it.

How many years did Toronto retain on Kessel? It wasn’t nearly half of his cap hit, but it can happen in certain circumstances.
The thing with Calgary is they’re rebuilding. They don’t really need the Huberdeau cap room and won’t need it for the foreseeable future. Maybe once the team improves and has to spend more on its own players.

Can’t see Flames able to move Huberdeau at this point. Way too much money owed. Maybe in 5 years when it’s only three left, then they can retain and get it done?
Could they buy him out at some point?

The buyout is ugly no matter the year they do it in. I expect to watch Huberdeau flounder for another 7 years after this one

I'd do that but Nurse isn't waiving his NMC for Calgary if I had to guess
Jk I would not do that. Huberdeau is looking like the worst contract in North American pro sports

A 10.5 million dollar anchor for 8 more years, Flames... Better hope the NHL brings back compliance buyouts

He could always develop an allergy to his equipment

Its pretty baffling why the flames couldn't spend an hour looking at film from his Florida days and figure out that his game is entirely gaining the zone, peeling off and passing the puck over to the trailing defenseman or opposing winger while the center crashes the net, get Duclair or Duchene and sign Gostisbehere, keep them together on the ice at all times and have him be a PPG+ player.
