1) I thought the 2005-2006 Rangers coming out of the lockout were going to be awful. I remember having so little belief in the team at the beginning of the year that I didn't even watch the season opener. Then Jagr and Lundqvist happened and they were one of the most surprising teams during the regular season.

2) When the Rangers went down 3 games to 1 against the Penguins in the 2014 playoffs I was 100% convinced they were done. Probably wanted a bunch of players moved.

They ended up going to the Stanley Cup Finals that year, and basically the same core had the best record in the NHL the following year.

Defending to my death that Chabot was and was going to be a better defensemen than McAvoy.

I have a couple potential takes brewing that might look pretty bad in a couple of years too.

Ducks taking Lindholm. I’ve since learned to trust our scouting department - specifically on dmen.

Andersen would thrive in Toronto and lead them to not a Cup, but at least a lot of playoff success.

I wanted Fabbro over McAvoy. Not 100% sure if I posted it on this site or not but it's definitely apart of my digital footprint.

I thought Vladar was the goalie of the future, not Swayman.

I thought Frank Vatrano and Ryan Donato were gonna be studs. They're not bad, but I thought they were gonna be apart of the next generation of Bruins stars. Urho Vaakanainen too now that I think about it.

I was super duper salty about the Isles in 2021 when they were beating us. Went on a rant about how lucky they were until a couple Isles fans put me in my place. They were nice about it too so I'll always appreciate them giving me a virtual dope slap.

All my opinions have maybes, ifs, or probablies

But I thought the Pens should trade Bryan Rust the summer before he got 56 in 55.

I didn't think Johnny Midget could ever make it in the NHL because of his diminutive stature.

Some stupid things I remember saying...

  • 2009: Early in 2009-2010, I remember arguing with @Avs_19 that new Colorado acquisition Tom Preissing was good, largely based off one fluky assist. :badidea:
  • 2010: After his strong rookie season (32gp, 11g, 8a, 19p) and post-season (6gp, 2g, 2a, 4p), I thought Brandon Yip was going to be a 2nd liner. I remember arguing with @ABasin about it.:booboo:
  • 2014 & 2015: I remember being happy when Colorado signed Cretaceous era players Jarome Iginla (2014) and Francois Beauchemin (2015). I also defended the Brad Stuart trade and extension (2014). :damnpc:
  • 2018: Early in the 2018-2019 season, when Alex Kerfoot was a point-per-game after ~20 games, I recall saying Kerfoot >= Tomas Hertl. :banghead:
Beauchemin trade to ANA for Jake Gardiner/Lupul still gets me. People thought TOR fleeced ANA, but both Lupul/Gardiner had sorted ends to their careers in TOR. Lupul became an all-star for one season but could never stay healthy. Gardiner was as soft as they come, and didn't really play all that well at the end. Both Lupul/Gardiner even became scapegoats near the end. Beauchemin? He had a solid career in ANA.

I was mildly optimistic when the Canucks hired Jim "The Draft Whisperer" Benning because it was obvious the team desperately needed an infusion of young talent as they transitioned to the post-Sedin era. I even posted in a thread to say it was silly to label Benning a bottom 3 GM in the league after his first season. (In my defense, the Canucks finished 2nd in the Pacific that year with over 100 points.)

I tip my hat to those that rightly recognized that Benning was a catastrophically bad GM right from the start.

I wrote something along the lines of “if Ottawa wins a cup, Cowen will be their playoff MVP”

There was a short stretch in his rookie year where he was flying up and down the ice, skating beautifully, and just doing it all. Unfortunately he lost his skating and everything fell apart horribly.

Still think he could have been a good DMan if not for injury and his garbage attitude, but I really thought he could be special.

I remember thinking Stalberg could be a real impact player the first time I saw him… another case in which I saw a big guy moving quickly and confidently with the puck through the NZ and over-estimated the consistency with which they could make plays like that

In 2021 I had this to say about Pastrnak's scoring potential.... yes it's a hilariously terrible take.

Pretty certain his production would drop to 40-50 point level if he wasn't playing with Bergeron and Marchand. IMO he's a Kris Versteeg with a better shot.
To get me convinced he's a 60+ points man without elite players around him, I guess we have to wait until he gets traded or either one of his linemates retires / moves down on the 2nd or 3rd line. Bergeron is 36, Marchand 33, Pastrnak 25. We will get an answer in 2-3 years when Bergeron likely has nothing left in the tank, Marchand's play has fallen as well and Pastrnak is just entering into his prime at 27.

It might not be on this board, but I remember telling everyone that Boston would regret the Chara signing and that he already had his best years in Ottawa. I didn't know what a physical fitness freak Chara was or something. Just a bad take, though. I may have also lauded Ottawa's decision to keep Redden over Chara when it looked like they couldn't afford both.
