I really thought Tom Wilson's long deal was a big mistake with the way he was playing.

Ended up being excellent.

I've been here since 2002. It's like the sands of the seashore. My favorite was probably the running commentary by that guy who was anti-Jack Hughes and pro Kaako. Hated Hughes' "wide turns" among other things.
That thread was an absolute gem. Honestly one of the funniest threads ever.

Personally I thought Brandon Gormley was gonna be a moster

I never really saw "It" from Adam Fox pre-NHL. His WJCs I were all the viewings I had of him, and he just came across as profoundly unimpressive, just a guy. I didn't mind getting him, nor the price paid, but I kinda just expected him to be an average/slightly above average 3rd pairing guy with bad skating.

Then I watched him play against NHL-level competition, and it immediately became obvious just how wrong I was. I swear I've never seen a guy look that cool under pressure as a rookie, there was just 0 panic in his game whatsoever. Like he had ice in his veins.

Mackenzie Blackwood will be a pretty good goaltender and is the Devils goalie of the future

Alex Nedeljkovic is a great pickup by Detroit and Carolina really shouldn't have dealt him just to sign Andersen

Not my worst take, but a very recent one that I whiffed on was Florida wouldn't make the playoffs, which I was very adamant about in February-March. The math wasn't in their favor and they were running out of ice rink to really just get in. Although, I thought they would be in the playoffs before the season started and probably through sometime in early December, but I had them buried by later in December/around the new year.

Bolts should've tore down and rebuilt after losing to Columbus. That core was clearly not going to lead them to a championship.

Whoops.
I was extremely harsh on them after that one. I didn't say they should rebuild, but I was over expecting a cup and called them chokers and mentally weak. I was a bit harsh on Colorado after losing to Vegas in round 2 in 2021 also, but not nearly as harsh as I was on Tampa in 2019.

With that being said, I'm pretty sure I wound up not picking them to lose a single round after that until the first round against Toronto this past year. And they would only lose one round before that and the Toronto loss was the first time an Eastern Conference team beat them in the playoffs since that Columbus sweep.

I definitely picked them through the 2020 playoffs, especially in the first round against Columbus. I didn't think they'd lose to them again, but the worst I had for them is maybe it would 7 games (I forgot my exact pick) or that they'll either sweep them or come close to losing it and have a real scare, but win in the end.

The only real scare they had was the 800 OT game, which they won anyway.

Actually, I did pick Florida to beat them in the second round in 2022, but I immediately recanted at some point during game 2, which I don't normally do that early in a series.

Toronto over Florida was actually my quick flip flop of this year. Had Toronto winning in 7, flipped to Florida at some point in game 2. Usually I only have one of those every year.

Some stupid things I remember saying...

  • 2009: Early in 2009-2010, I remember arguing with @Avs_19 that new Colorado acquisition Tom Preissing was good, largely based off one fluky assist. :badidea:
  • 2010: After his strong rookie season (32gp, 11g, 8a, 19p) and post-season (6gp, 2g, 2a, 4p), I thought Brandon Yip was going to be a 2nd liner. I remember arguing with @ABasin about it.:booboo:
  • 2014 & 2015: I remember being happy when Colorado signed Cretaceous era players Jarome Iginla (2014) and Francois Beauchemin (2015). I also defended the Brad Stuart trade and extension (2014). :damnpc:
  • 2018: Early in the 2018-2019 season, when Alex Kerfoot was a point-per-game after ~20 games, I recall saying Kerfoot >= Tomas Hertl. :banghead:
