World U20 Summer 2022 edition

Is there a post for the list of draft eligibles here?

David Reinbacher (AUT)
Ian Scherzer (AUT)
Connor Bedard (CAN)
Rainers Rullers (LAT)
Peteris Bulans (LAT)
Martin Misiak (SVK)
Samuel Honzek (SVK)
Maxim Strbak (SVK)
Dalibor Dvorsky (SVK)
Charlie Stramel (USA)

Pretty short list, since compared to usual situation some of the two-year-underaged players are already drafted.

The ticket sales for the tournament are awful  there’s entire sections for Canada games in the lower bowl that are empty. It’s to be expected but kinda funny

And? So is China but we compete against them at various sports. The USSR was our enemy and we were actively engaged in proxy-wars against them for decades, but that didn't stop us then.
Let´s see what happens if China attacks Taiwan....

Big corporations have pulled sponsorship money and the ice at Rogers Place is advertising-free, with only the IIHF event logo at centre. The boards are largely devoid of ads — only an IIHF app and Swiss watchmaker Tissot have spots. There were also more than 1,000 tickets still available for several games, including Canada’s opener against Latvia on Wednesday.

It makes the event look distinctly down market.

And whether it’s because of the timing or the scandal, thousands of tickets remain unsold — including for Canada’s games — and Edmonton lacks buzz about the tournament. It’s unheard of for the world juniors in Canada, but perhaps to be expected.

I'm sure the people of Edmonton have World Junior burnout. Edmonton has been left at the alter twice, already, only to have the tournament taken away. Getting excited about a third invitation is likely difficult.

As I have said elsewhere, people don't even talk about the Ukraine anymore - and people are dying by the thousands.

This too shall pass.

You keep posting this and it is ridicuous. The Ukraine war is in the news hourly. I am watching a news channel and they are talking about countries (Estonia) wanting all countires to revoke tourist visas to Russia. It is ridiculous that they are even issued.

Here in Edmonton we only get about 2-3 really good months of summer before the cold/snow returns, August being one of them. Lots of people take time off in August to enjoy the last gasp of summer before school/work begin again in the fall. So, you pick either $600 to take your family of 4 to a world junior game, or take them on vacation.

It's a terrible time for a tournament here, and the high ticket prices aren't helping

When the war first started, it was 24/7 Ukraine on Fox/CNN/MSNBC, etc, it's not even close to that now - I see a couple minutes, here and there. Even Zelenskyy implied he needed to get his message out before the west lost interest. Well... the west lost interest.

Anyway, we can agree to disagree.

You are probably right about the US. I don't watch US news. I watch Canadian news channels and they are still reporting it along with all the other news.

This particular tournament just doesn't have much luster. It will be interesting to see if any of the shine comes back thus winter.

You haven't opened the news the past 6 months, have you?

What a joke that the Russian players are still being blacklisted by the IIHF.

Talk about petty. :shakehead
Hah Russia should be banned atleast 5 years from all IIHF competition and also World Cups etc and Putin supporters like Ovechkin should be banned from NHL.

Did you feel that way about South African athletes?

Not sure why you keep bringing that up, because it's completely irrelevant, but again, my answer's still no. :dunno:

Why?

Finland would never play against them in the current situation. Never. I suspect this is true for at least Sweden, USA and Canada too. I would rather watch paint drying than see that those colours on ice.

Pretty much this, it's like trying to hold Christmas in August it would be different and some people would opt out.

The real test will be the 23 tournament which won't have the Russians either.

Don't think it has much to do with being petty, more to do with genocide but hey.

Finland would boycott this tournament if Russia played.

Didn't realize those teenage Russian hockey players, who have zero say or impact whatsoever on the Ukraine conflict, were such monsters. :help:

Gosh, good thing the IIHF is putting their foot down and keeping them out of the tourney, eh? What a relief, great job there.

Meanwhile Hockey Canada's just welcomed with open arms, nothing to see here, nevermind the multiple scandals currently under investigation.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

If that's what sports were about. Unfortunately, it's about representing a country.

I've already said that I wouldn't mind if Hockey Canada got suspended.
