I mean i wouldn't use this tournament as a benchmark for a good goalie. Remember Justin Pogge? Askarov will be fine once he isn't playing in front of such an inexperienced defense.

But Rask won the goalie of the tournament that year. Sometimes you really can tell.

Canadian goalies almost always look good at these tourneys because their d is always elite.

Tukka Rask won goalie of the tournament the same year that Pogge was the starter for Canada.

No, this tourney isnt the best sample size, I just see some fundamental flaws in his game.

He has been touted as having great physical tools.
Doesn’t mean that he can handle pressure.
Leaf fans should be familiar with that.

Kind of glad Askarov wasn’t available........I may eat those words but he hasn’t stood out in this tourney in either year.

He plays in the KHL. He can handle the pressure. People put way too much stock into this tournament both good and bad.

Russia's defense is pretty terrible, and he hasn't been great, but Askarov is really, really good.

To be fair, he plays for a team where backups put up a .930 save percentage. Russia has been killing it with goalies lately, but there's room to question him.

If it wasn't dangerous to do so, I would be super gluing or taping his stick to his blocker so he can't drop it. This is ridiculous.

Askarov looks like Hutchinson there on the 3rd goal...glad we didn't get him...:sarcasm:

Askarov has looked terrible against good teams. He's gotta get broken down and rebuilt from scratch. He got drafted because he's flexible and quick but dam his positioning looks bad.

Although in regards to him dropping his stick, he needs to tell his teammates to leave it. Getting a player stick does not help at all, which he was given on the second goal. All it does is take the defender without a stick out of the play, distracts the goalie having to use a lighter stick, and also makes the puck bounce weird when it hits it. Its much better to play without a stick then use a player stick.

You should never pick up your goalies stick and try to hand it to him while the puck is in your zone, its a penalty if you play the puck with both sticks in your hand, and you are distracting your goalie when your trying to hand it to him.

If Askarov doesnt pan out people are going to act like it was a #1 OA bust and not a # 12 which probably have a 50% rate of making the league
