Live or not.

TSN is blocked here at work.

The person controlling the music really likes Billy Talent, even by Canadian standards.

Canadians playing really well, fast, physical, good puck movement. It's especially good to see because most of the players in the line-up are fighting for spots. Canada has made 0 cuts, so the guys playing against Finland are the ones getting cut.

Oskari Laaksonen only standout Finn after 2 periods. His better and more ready at this level than Anttoni Honka. Great 3rd round pick by the Sabres.

Anybody have thoughts on who'll get cut? Pretty tough considering this whole team is playing pretty well. The guys on the bottom lines like Dewar, Anderson-Dolan and Teasdale aren't getting much ice-time.

Lavoie looks excellent as a late add, he has to stay IMO.

My mistake. It was the first half of the game, not the first period. But go ahead and try to attack me. I couldn't care less.

This is just from the first half of the game. I didn't bother to look over the second half of the game.

4:00-Forechecked well, forward shoves him off the puck. Needs help from partner. USA can't clear the zone. Shift leads to a Sweden goal that was started by Hughes losing the puck.

6:05-Can't control a puck that the goalie knocked away right in front of the net. Leads to the shift being extended.

6:20-Same shift. Tries to corral the puck, doesn't have a play to make, knocked to the ice and loses the puck.

8:05-Walked. Goalie bails him out. The play continues. He tries to retrieve the puck after the makes the save. Trips over his teammate Kemp, and gives up the puck. Leads to Sweden zone time where he gets fooled by a move from a Sweden player who had no angle. Leads to the player having space to make an uncontested pass to a guy right in front.

9:35-Stick isn't on the ice as Sweden enters the zone, allows a pass to a player outside of him that would've been deflected away with proper stick positioning. Player takes a bad angle shot and hits the side of the net. Goes chasing after it with Hughes. Both overrun the puck, another player takes control. Hughes does a good job to steal it from that player, but then another Swedish forward comes to take it away from Hughes. Sweden retains zone time. Sweden player then shoots the puck into Hughes skates. He can't find it right away. Ends up chipping it around the boards to his brother who doesn't have much of a play to make and turns the puck over right in front of his net. Scramble leads to more Swedish possession. The puck eventually comes to Hughes again. He must be tired by this point, and he takes too long to make a play. Sweden takes the puck back in a scrum and eventually cleanly establishes possession again.
The 6:05 and 8:05 are quite a stretch. If he had a longer stick then yeah he would have been able to get the puck, but he's not, and the puck is picked up by his teammate who loses it, can't really fault Hughes there, he hadn't actually seen the puck.

8:05 yeah he gets beat as the other guy has more momentum than him coming down the line like that, but Hughes does an excellent job at pivoting and getting a stick to disturb the puck handler, and all the goalie had to do was stay parallel.

Also 6:20 wasn't a bad defensive play either, he did a good job to grab the puck and pin himself in the first place in time for support, he did get knocked off but his support was already there, that's not what you call a really bad defensive play.

To be honest, most of those timestamps you listed weren't bad defensively plays at all. A really bad defensive play would be being out of position, a costly turnover and or a really high risk move, constantly getting nudged off the puck or getting the puck stolen in your own end etc etc. None of those things happened to him in this game (I'm not saying these things don't happen to Hughes cause it does) but he played excellent tonight and I thought you were slightly overreacting when you said he had four or so bad defensively plays.

Agree on Lavoie.

Outside of Dobson most of those D are likely getting cut that are in the lineup tonight.

Biased here as an Anaheim fan.. couldn't agree more with you. Canadian WJC teams have fallen into the trap in years past by not taking players with sandpaper to their game. I imagine the coaching staff has zero issue with how he's playing, Summer Showcase game or not.

I literally cant think of a time Canada didnt bring enough sandpaper to a tournament. I love physical hockey but Comtois runs around like that in a tournament game and youre short handed. Special teams in single elimination is really important, Comtois needs to tone it down.

In the NHL those plays are great, in a short tourney where every PP counts its not needed that much. Especially this year because Canada has a tonne of size to choose from. Dont need to bring the one energy guy necessarily like they have in years past

Lavoie might be playing his way onto the team here. Hes taking his opportunity and running with it. Whats the point of a tourney like this if playing the wy he is isnt recognized. Barring a ridiculously slow start I'd say hes getting an invite to camp in December

He had a pretty bad defensive game. A few nice offensive plays after my post, but more of a mixed bag than anything.

Are you talking about Boqvist?

Because Hughes was much better than him on the same ice tonight. Boqvist was benched in OT, Hughes made the game winning OT goal happen and was good defensively for three periods today.
