ESPN will be very happy with the Canada-US number. Especially given that ESPN isn't the usual home for hockey in the US. Doubling the average audience for an NHL game is impressive.

Not when it's the last meaningful game for the US.
Though ratings are going to only drop from here on out. This was their last chance to capitalize on this tournament.
"Good ratings" what world are we living in where those were "good ratings"? They were better ratings comparably to former games that doesn't make them "good ratings." The spike in ratings was due to the game being on ESPN and not ESPN2. Are you unaware of what viewership normal sporting events draw? They almost had as many viewers as the 3AM NFL primetime talk show. They got the primetime tv slot on ESPN with zero competition for sports viewership and turned in 200000 less viewers than the App State vs. Miami lunchtime battle of the unranked teams last Saturday in college football and even that's deceptive because the #1 game slots are always on ABC. You are very optimistic if you think ESPN will consider these good ratings like you do.That's irrelevant to whether or not the Canada-US game drew a good rating that ESPN will be happy with.
In this type of tournament you can't control who makes the Finals. Obviously it was set up to result in a Canada-US final, which would have been ideal for both Rogers and ESPN, but the US flopped. I don't think that will impact ESPNs decision on bidding for future games.
Sweden Finland got 272. I think that's an improvement on some of the earlier exclusively euro games, but it was ESPN not ESPN2 like some of the weekend matchups.
I feel like to some extent ESPN half-*ssed this. I definitely saw the ads watching football, but I never felt bombarded by ads like I do whenever the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl, other big sporting events are on the horizon.
Think it has a lot to do with CFB weekend. And for sure I think ESPN has great analytics people they crunched the numbers and realized there just wasn't enough interest to warrant commercial spots, prime positions etc but optimally of course at least in the NHL's eyes ESPN does a little more to specifically promote this event.Pretty tough spot in terms of what to do with this event in my opinion. It would be nice if they went crazy for that with the push you're describing. But reality is for ESPN in a few short months Basketball starts and they don't want people watching hockey over it away from their network.
Does Bettman and the others care about how this tournament does anywhere else but in USA and Canada?
of course not. That's why the scheduled most of the european games in bad time for Europe to watch. Oh wait.Does Bettman and the others care about how this tournament does anywhere else but in USA and Canada?
Nobody is expecting 6 million plus in Canada.
I have a funny feeling a NA-Can semi-final will bring in huge numbers.

And still getting worse ratings than the World Championships...
World Championships? Is there a World Championship in hockey?
Oh right, there is that IIHF thingie...
So much this. That is the matchup I have wanted to see, more than Can-USA or CAN-RUS. Personally I've been passively watching the tournament, but I would schedule my day around that game.
I can't help but think the NHL is praying for that possible matchup. With the USA not moving on, that seems like the only game that can draw a big (decent?) crowd in the US on ESPN.
IIHF World Championship very popular tournament in Russia.
In Europe in general.
