ESPN will be very happy with the Canada-US number. Especially given that ESPN isn't the usual home for hockey in the US. Doubling the average audience for an NHL game is impressive.

Though ratings are going to only drop from here on out. This was their last chance to capitalize on this tournament.

Not when it's the last meaningful game for the US.

That's irrelevant to whether or not the Canada-US game drew a good rating that ESPN will be happy with.

In this type of tournament you can't control who makes the Finals. Obviously it was set up to result in a Canada-US final, which would have been ideal for both Rogers and ESPN, but the US flopped. I don't think that will impact ESPNs decision on bidding for future games.

And they did capitalize, so they should be pleased with the number.

If ESPN can't stomach real sports with real results, they should put all their money into bidding on WWE TV when it comes up.

"Good ratings" what world are we living in where those were "good ratings"? They were better ratings comparably to former games that doesn't make them "good ratings." The spike in ratings was due to the game being on ESPN and not ESPN2. Are you unaware of what viewership normal sporting events draw? They almost had as many viewers as the 3AM NFL primetime talk show. They got the primetime tv slot on ESPN with zero competition for sports viewership and turned in 200000 less viewers than the App State vs. Miami lunchtime battle of the unranked teams last Saturday in college football and even that's deceptive because the #1 game slots are always on ABC. You are very optimistic if you think ESPN will consider these good ratings like you do.

Sweden Finland got 272. I think that's an improvement on some of the earlier exclusively euro games, but it was ESPN not ESPN2 like some of the weekend matchups.

I feel like to some extent ESPN half-*ssed this. I definitely saw the ads watching football, but I never felt bombarded by ads like I do whenever the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl, other big sporting events are on the horizon.

Pretty tough spot in terms of what to do with this event in my opinion. It would be nice if they went crazy for that with the push you're describing. But reality is for ESPN in a few short months Basketball starts and they don't want people watching hockey over it away from their network.

I thought that was the interesting part in terms of the Dream Team in the Olympics. Did NBC push them, yes. But I think they backed off relative to other years. Lebron being gone hurt for sure, but I couldn't help but notice the pushes for Swimming, Soccer, Volleyball, Gymnastics and Golf. Why? Well that is all content NBC owns outside of the Olympics. It has to play some factor.

Even if they cannot compete with something and we see obvious difference, it probably doesn't get fully past whatever metrics they are running on it or if they studied it and said this is the max amount of time we want to put into advertising this for the investment we want out of this. Honestly from a business perspective keeping this tournament away from NBC is probably a good thing for some of the folks in Bristol I am guessing.

Think it has a lot to do with CFB weekend. And for sure I think ESPN has great analytics people they crunched the numbers and realized there just wasn't enough interest to warrant commercial spots, prime positions etc but optimally of course at least in the NHL's eyes ESPN does a little more to specifically promote this event.

Does Bettman and the others care about how this tournament does anywhere else but in USA and Canada?

of course not. That's why the scheduled most of the european games in bad time for Europe to watch. Oh wait.

Nobody is expecting 6 million plus in Canada.

There are various people on HF who have posted the World Cup is line with the Olympics. If that is the view, then 6 million is understated since Canada in gold medal in 2010 & 14 easily got over 10 million.

I don't think the WC is even close to the Olympics. But the World Juniors is a more reachable comparison.

When Rogers signed on, I believe they thought this was going to get at least World Junior ratings. But since their NHL ratings have been a disappointment and Jays ratings have been a pleasant surprise, I think Rogers will be okay with beating Stanley Cup Finals ratings of 2-3 million.

I have a funny feeling a NA-Can semi-final will bring in huge numbers.

So much this. That is the matchup I have wanted to see, more than Can-USA or CAN-RUS. Personally I've been passively watching the tournament, but I would schedule my day around that game.

I can't help but think the NHL is praying for that possible matchup. With the USA not moving on, that seems like the only game that can draw a big (decent?) crowd in the US on ESPN.

I think everyone should give up on this getting anything close to good ratings on ESPN. USA/Can was the peak.

Why exactly is semi-final #2 in 100% direct competition with a Jays home game? I guess for European TV?

After tonight, every game but the Saturday night Canada/??? game will be up against a Jays game (including G 1+2 of the Finals being up against a rather large home series against Baltimore). So I wouldn't be too confident on the Canadian TV rating side either.

I don't see Canada/NA drawing well in the US - you have a lot of actual good CFB games (and LSU/Auburn!) on the ESPN/ABC/FOX Saturday night
