On Cdn English tv, Canada vs Czech was most watched sporting event on the weekend with 1.55 million which is comparable to HNIC early game numbers. French tv probably got at least 500k.

NA vs Finland on Sunday night got 1.01 million. US vs Europe on Saturday afternoon got 586k. Sweden vs Russia on Sunday afternoon got 487k.

Party on Friday night got 243k.

For Rogers, these should be considered solid ratings. Not spectacular but certainly not a disappointment. Only slight underpeformer was Sweden vs Russia since it was below 500k and only game not to win its time slot as it was beaten by Jays & CFL games.

numbers will rise through out the tourney, but ESPN has done a poor job in marketing this. It's all football right now.

Could ESPN snagging the US rights to the WCOH be a harbinger of a eventual return of the NHL to the network?

NBC Sports' current contract ends in 2021, and it's possible NBC might not renew. Granted it was the NHL that started the transformation of the OLN into NBCSN, but it would be cool to see the NHL return to ESPN and ABC after a 17-year absence (ABC currently only has one of the major leagues, the NBA, and unless ABC gets more sports events on their schedule the NBA could leave after the current contract is up in 2025).

If you want hockey to be treated like horse racing, ESPN will be great. Nobody will know the NHL exists until February.

For those that don't read Russian.

World Cup of hockey is at the top.
Sunday 3.4 rating %

Then there's a bunch of champions league, Europa league. The news. Formula 1.

These ratings are not good. I don't know if this might keep ESPN from going after the NHL TV deal once it's up.

They and the nhl did a pretty bad job of advertising it and building hype for it. No one I know, even people who watch the flyers regularly, even knew this event was going on. I asked people at work if they watched the game last night and not a single person knew what I was talking about. Having it at this time of the year was stupid. It's lost in the crowd with football season just starting and the mlb home stretch. This is on nobodies radar in the states so I'm not shocked at all by the ratings.

NBC and FOX will be the two really fighting over the next NHL deal. I don't think ESPN wants to cover hockey for a whole season, they seem to want to just cover small tournaments like the NCAA and the World Cup.

It can be both a money grab, and something the players take at least somewhat seriously and try to win. The NHL season is a money grab. Somebody makes money from the Olympics too. The world is a business Mr. Beale.

You can't seriously compare the NHL to the IOC?

I agree. This is a bad time for hockey tournament. There is way too much going on.

Lol. It's considered a massive success already for Rogers.

It's a good start but only massive if Canada makes final and Rogers gets World Junior Final type ratings of 6 million+.

Canada vs USA on ESPN got 766k.
