My dad is french and my mom is english. I was born in Montreal. I still live in Montreal. Im as Canadian as anyone else from anywhere else in this country. I would be rooting for Canada....the entirety of Canada..which includes Quebec thank you very much.

I think you missed the point. Canadians will already be playing for two teams at the next World Cup. Do you feel an all francophone team would be less Canadian than an all anglo team?

Well said, sir. Respect! :)

No - he hit the point right in the head. Its you that are off track!

I can't stand the plan for a team young guns. Since the next World Cup seems destined to be a gimmick tournament I would way rather see two Canadian teams, Anglo and French, than what the NHL has proposed. I know lots of people would be worried about the political implications, but from a fun perspective I think it could be cool and I know it would be a massive hit amongst French Canadians.

So far its not been a 'massive hit' here amongst French Canadians, so I'm not sure your statement is very accurate. To be blunt its a daft idea.

Team Quebec would be pretty weak IMO. All they really have going for them is their two-way centers. The wingers would be atrocious (relatively speaking) and the defensive depth leaves a lot to be desired. Goaltending isn't the best either.

I associate Team Canada's mentality to team Iceland's in Mighty Ducks 2, no Team Canada in that movie, I wonder why... I never root for the arrogant gold or bust teams because that mentality doesn't respect the sport and its beauty, takes everything for granted. I'd rather root for the underdog, I'd be extatic if team French-Canada won the bronze medal in a thriller of a tournament. Doesn't have to be team Québec, French in one of the two national languages afterall, and we played a huge part in the History of hockey and of the country, I know they've been on the defensive but Canadians should embrace their heritage and make a step closer to national unity by actually caring instead of being paranoid.

Well said. I grew up right through the difficult times of the referendums, Meech Lake, etc, etc, and as an Anglophone child / teenager was as anti-French as they come. But now I realize that I was wrong and Canada's French culture is a treasure that should be protected and supported. I hope the most Quebecers want to remain in Canada but if they don't that is their choice. I'm so sick of the anglo majority trying to deny francophones anything that they see as a threat. For gods sake it is just a hockey team and if people were really secure in who they are then you'd think they'd support it.

Sorry, what is it that Canada is doing bad and what is it you want it to do? You think they don't embrace their heritage (and subsequently don't respect French Canadians)? Is that it? What should Canada do differently?

You're saying you hate Canada essentially because they have too many good players, and that you'd love to cheer for French Canada because they would suck more? Wow, oh boy

It's not their choice. Quebec is constitutionally bound to Canada. If they want to leave, they will do it in a constitutional manner.

This is about a hockey team and besides, I'd say quebec was brought into Canada with guns on the plains of a, we may not have a say how they leave

This is nonsense. There shouldn't be a team French speaking Canada, just like there shouldn't be a team English speaking Canada. There should be team Canada. To try to tie that into "the anglo majority trying to deny francophones anything" is absurd.

I'm giving you a tip, WhiteLight. Canada would most def solve their Québec problem if they embraced it, it's like when you have a roomate and he starts to clean dishes, it makes you join him to clean the appartment. In the litterary world Québec writers always say Canadians get out of the room at Canada's Arts' Council stuff when it's Québec's turn. What the **** do you want us to feel like other than used if you don't side with us and try a bunch of shenanigans on our behalf ? If Canada is to be a country it has to be a mutual decision because we both respect and like each other; as actually interested, instead of the Lord Durham thing.

As if Canada wanted a secession war, it would be a kick in the nuts of true justice after all the peace Québec brought within years, and don't bring up FLQ because nobody likes them and they don't even compare to the heel of such awful things as FARC in Colombia where I've actually lived for 6 months; would be seen as sour losing from your part. Hey I was talking about national unity my friend.

As I've said many times here there are already going to be two teams with Canadians playing, so it's not like what I am proposing is somehow breaking up team Canada. Is there any scenario where you would be okay with the top French speaking players forming a team? Say just for some fun exhibition games against club teams??

Pretty much no, I would be against any Canadian team being set up by language. It's not the end of the world, but inevitably some parasitic politicians (English speaking, french speaking or both) would try to use it for some larger political goal. Dividing Canada into an English or French team is inevitably going to create this issue. There is no benefit to creating a sports team based around a language.

Legally, there is no such discrimination. Canada's official stance as a federation does not discriminate towards the French language nor Quebec's law and customs - it in fact gives it equal value. Quebec holds 1/3 of seats at the Supreme Court but does not even have 1/3 of Canada's population. Is this not respect?

Now unless you have first hand experience about the Canada Arts Council stuff, do you have a source?

I'm admittedly no expert on this. But this Canada is out to get Quebec thing or doesn't respect Quebec seems way overblown. You see what you want to see.

I don't know, I think that hampering things that French Canadians might like probably hurts unity more than it helps.
