I think simply a Team Quebec would make more sense then Team French Canada.

Why?

Why Quebec over Ontario - which has more NHL players than just about anywhere else?

It's a daft idea full stop. Either give each region/province it's own team, or one Canadian team alone. And we'd never see Canada broken up into separate teams - you could very likely end up with Canada on all three steps of a podium.

How's that good for hockey?

I don't like the team young guns idea either for the time being. This idea is no better due to politics.

I see that most people here are against the idea, which I understand. Out of interest I'm going to see if I can start a similar thread in the Habs forum to see if the response is any different.

That thread didn't last 10 minutes on the Habs boards. Anyhow I came here to post I would want this to happen but unless Canada is more united and embrases its French heritage I don't see it happening.

It's more than just quebec. Toews and giroux and others could also join in. They may not be the strongest, but not the weakest either.
Maybe but I think your reaching on Toews, he's half french Canadian and was raised in central/western Canada. Also in his case its probably better for his marketing deals to play for the regular Canadian team.

Pretty sure a GTHL alumni team (Tavares, Subban, Stamkos, Mcdavid, Pietriangelo, Bennett, R. Strome, Monahan, B.Smith, Simmonds, Giordano, Spezza) would be more competitive then team french Canada.

Most, yes. Some people would enjoy it and some would enjoy using it as a means of supporting their political ideologies, but most people are pretty reasonable and reasonable people see that an "international" tournament featuring non-nations is gimmicky.

Panamericans games feature 8 non-sovereign nations (and yes, Québec is a nation)

The Pan American games are gimmicky and largely irrelevant - I hae higher hopes for hockey at the highest level. Also, and I know this is going to devolve very quickly, Quebec is very clearly a province of Canada and not a nation.

As a French Canadian, this idea is  for so many different reasons...worse than the Young Guns team.

If the NHL's goal with all these new teams was to get as many NHL players as possible in the event than this team Quebec idea is not so bad. I know that there is some political tone to all of this, but a team Quebec vs team Ontario game would be more emotional than Canada vs team young guns.

They should have done: team Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario and West.

Ontario vs Quebec has some England-Scotland soccer potential.

The nation of Hamilton respectfully disagrees. :sarcasm:

I'd like East Canada (Ontario-East + Nunavut) vs. West Canada (Manitoba-west)

I'll try my best not to get too political : but you cannot state as a fact that Quebec is simply a province and doesnt constitute and distinct nation, as there is still a strong nationalistic movement and pro-independance parties and groups here in Québec.

It is either ignorant or disrespectful to say otherwise IMO - even if you're not fond of nationalism (I certainly am not).

Better suggestion I think group the team by CHL regions: WHL, OHL, and QMJHL. Makes it less political and more balanced, an alternative option to the under 23 and rest of the world teams. Not sure about the concept of a World Cup when 3 of the teams are from one country... but then again this is a World Cup where we have an under 23 North America and 'Rest of Europe' teams.

Though ideally by the next World Cup they won't need the two gimmick teams.

I can't stand the plan for a team young guns. Since the next World Cup seems destined to be a gimmick tournament I would way rather see two Canadian teams, Anglo and French, than what the NHL has proposed. I know lots of people would be worried about the political implications, but from a fun perspective I think it could be cool and I know it would be a massive hit amongst French Canadians.

I'm sure ever young québécois and francophone dreams of playing against Canada in a meaningless tournament.

:help:

This idea is 10x as gimmicky as the young stars idea. It has ridiculous political undertones and the notion would never be considered.
