It would take hell of a lot more than just a ceasefire for Russia to be reintegrated into anything.
Who knows what will happen, it is a long time to 2024. The Putin regime might be disposed and replaced with a more western-leaning government.

I think the IIHF and NHL wouldn't hesitate to reintegrate Russia as soon as politically possible. From my experience there is always a lot Russian fans going to these international events and spreading money around. IIHF surely wants to get that back asap

We could do something which I've been pimping for years. 8 game border clash series Team Canada vs. USA. Vancouver-Seattle Winnipeg-Chicago Detroit-Toronto New York Montreal. Would be an epic Connor McDavid vs. Auston Matthews matchup.
That would be some tremendous hockey.

My pipe dream is also that we bring back the Euro's Championships! Mid February or so for a nice 2 week tourney!

So, using your idea, I saw we have a NHL Euro Cup going on at the same time as this North American Cup. Bring in the highest 6 nations and round robin and Semis and best of 3 gold across Europe.

Euro games in morning and North American games in evening if you live in North America. It'll never happen but I'd enjoy the hell out of it.

awesome idea. I like it.

It won't.

And I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "oh, people will still be mad at them. There will be this huge grudge. And people won't forget!"

Some people won't. But most people will. For one, Russian agreement to a ceasefire will probably already be contingent on some sanctions relief.

And most people aren't personally affected by the war. Business comes first.

Barring a return of the World Cup, this would be an amazing idea!

Swiss newspaper NZZ reports that the NHL wants Switzerland to compete as a team.
I think it would be quite competitive. Of course not top level but somewhere trying to fight the Czechs für the #5 spot.

Nino-Hischier-Meier
Josi-Siegenthaler

Fiala-Suter-Kurashev
Kukan-Moser

will all be still active by 2024 barring injuries.
Then you have guys like Malgin, Andrighetto, Hofmann, etc. on a similar level.

I just hope there are no u23, leftovers, etc. It turns the whole thing into a joke pretty quickly.

I would enjoy seeing Switzerland there. It's a team that can reasonably beat any other without it being a colossal upset.

Switzerland being in either means there needs to at least be one more team - chosen via a qualifier? As it could really be Germany, Slovakia, Denmark or even Latvia worthy of a spot. Or maybe with just 6 teams with Russia still being banned.

I think the reason Switzerland would be chosen is that it has eclipsed the Czech Republic in the IIHF ranking for 6th. And while Czechia does have more NHL players, Switzerland has arguably the bigger stars, so there's no strong incentive to buck the rankings to include Czechia instead. If the Russian war persisted, both could be taken.

Daly: No Team Europe or North America at 2024 World Cup - TSN.ca
"TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported last week that a qualifying event could be held in 2023 to determine the field for the 2024 event.

"A play-in event is exactly what’s being discussed by the NHL, the NHLPA, the IIHF, and the various Federations," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "They’re meeting this week in Paris and they’re trying to hammer out some of the details.

"You could see a play-in event for some of the European teams in August 2023. We’ve talked a lot about what the World Cup will look like in 2024 and again in 2028, it will most likely be eight teams including Canada, the USA, and the six European Federations. Russia, obviously, is to be determined." "

For the last two spots, there may/would be a qualifying event. That's what I'm excited for, honestly, as a Team Austria fan. I don't know how many teams it would be. But for example. Ranks 1-6 - Finland, Canada, Russia, USA, Sweden, Switzerland. Say for example there are 2 groups of 4 for the last 2 spots. It might look something like.
Group A: Czechia, Denmark, Latvia, Austria
Group B: Slovakia, Germany, Norway, France
That tournament would be a ton of fun. To have NHL players, best on best of the mid-major countries, and then the World Cup after that would be great as well.

You can't have a best on best tournament without Russia. So many of the best players will be missing.

Hockey isn't suddenly going to stop with best on best tournaments. It will happen again but they shouldn't try the weird Team Europe and North American stuff, or a young players team. Just national teams, best players.

I like the plan. 8 teams is OK, so glad there will be no gimmick teams. A short and intense tournament (2 groups of 4, semi-finals, finals) would actually be interesting. (Almost) every game would really matter and would be played at 100 % by both teams.

I think both the Swiss and Germans would be able to ice competitive teams in a best-on-best tournament and I think both deserve to be there. I think a 10 team tournament would be good with US, Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Switzerland and German being complimented by 2 teams from qualifiers.

The thing is ... it's not that easy. The NHL has a commercial interest in the World Cup of Hockey. They want to earn money with it. It's a simple as that.

If this tournament happens prior to the NHL season in september teams like Switzerland and Germany which are not able to fill a roster with only NHL-players would need to have a break in their season or the teams would miss their national-team players for some games. The first would result in a financial loss, the second would result in a change of realities in terms of strength of teams.
Why should teams do that when the NHL on the other side is not ready to make an olympic break all 4 years?

We had this discussion in front of the last World Cup of Hockey. It's not gonna be easy to get a Swiss team to play there.

Let's get this straight. My personal opinions, not even slightly relevant. I do not work for the NHL or the IIHF. There is no "should" here.

I am speculating, on the basis of the claimed assumption that Switzerland is guaranteed a slot, that there are still 2 qualifier spots to be played for. There may be just 1. I dont know, and I dont think anyone who wasnt in Paris that weekend does.

I'm 100 percent for Switzerland going.

Just never occurred to me instead of Czechs... More like with.

Look at his reasoning.. He clearly doesn't know how big of a star Tomas Hertl is.
Lol its hilarious that you caught this.

I'm really not trying to weigh in on that issue. I'm just saying, Roman Josi is a huge name, potential Norris winner this year. Fiala, regardless of skill, plays in a huge market. It wouldnt be a publicity disaster is what I'm saying.
