Enough with the gimmick teams.

Have we heard anything about location? I'm assuming the knock-out rounds will be played in Canada at least. If they are serious about making this a reoccurring tournament I'd like to see it played in one (or maybe two cities) to keep "event feeling" in those cities and not so spread out, and then have it rotate between Europe and North America every other time.

Finland isn’t in Scandinavia

Well, the big rumour/news is that they want a pool in Prague.

First off.. I hate it when a few teams have to play in Europe and then fly to North America to try and win gold. Huge disadvantage with a 6 hour time zone difference while the other team gets to stay in one spot. This isn't like going from Red Deer to Edmonton.

Second off... Czechs don't really want it in Prague as they have the World's a few months before this and they don't think fans can afford to do both as World Cup tix will be at a premium.

You'd think as a Czech I welcome the idea but unless they want the whole thing in 2 arenas in a European Country or a North American one then piss off!

I'd rather it in Vegas and Arizona or some combo like that in February.

Note I may have misunderstood what I read and am wrong on all this.

You’re correct. Czechs don’t think it would make sense financially to host one pool there and are trying to get the IIHF involved in discussions with the NHL to not host. I think the European pool will ultimately be played in Sweden. Hopefully someday soon they’ll host an entire World Cup in Europe. That would be really cool

I just read up on this and it's super hype. I'm completely down. Glad the dumb gimmick teams are out of the way. Can't wait for the European qualifier, that event will be lit.

Yeah, I don't care so much about the venue or whether it will be played with 8 or 10 or how many teams, I am just glad to read they seem to rule out the gimmick teams which completely spoiled the 2016 edition. With proper NT's only in may be a big tournament.

The only way this tournament will ever get any real traction is to host the entire event in Europe.

That does not put money in the pockets of the NHL to the same degree so it will never happen.

Why? Having in it Europe makes it uncomfortable to watch for the US fans, and vice versa. You can never satisfy both because of different time zones.

No gimmicks and no Russia. should be a great tournament. looking forward to it.

I am not sure about Russia. Maybe they would invite them at the end? Really don't dare to make any prediction regarding this now.

You can alternate or give them one to host at some point.

It's not like the FIFA World Cup is only held in Europe.

It should definitely alternate. I just don't think that the 2024 edition, if it happens, must take place in Europe, otherwise it is a meaningless tournament.

Just speaking in general regarding its credibility as an international tournament.

No gimmick teams, alternate hosting time zones.

I think alternating every other tournament between North America and Europe is the fair way to do it. If, at some point in the future, Asian teams start to get competitive, it should be hosted there as well, but that is at least 50 years or so down the line I think

Russias inclusion is 50/50 at the moment I'd think. It depends on if, when and how the Ukraine conflict resolves, and I don't dare to speculate on that.

Russia is f***** for international competition for at least a decade or more. 👍 They can join the North Korean Galaxy Championship instead.
I think that is the main reason why i think there won't be a 2024 World Cup. It's PR nightmare. Despite trying to portrait It like a "world Cup" the NHL Is really trying to create a "NHL world Cup" and I believe that keeping out all the Russian superstars is something that the NHL would like to avoid.
At the same time, the backlash of including Russia (Even in a gimmicky way like the OAR, since there are players that have been a big on Putins propaganda) would be too much.
I think they will take time hoping for a quick "International rehabilitering" or Russia, which seems very unlikely, or postpone It

I think there will be a ceasefire and some point, and then Russia will be reintegrated into the world, not merely in hockey.

We could do something which I've been pimping for years. 8 game border clash series Team Canada vs. USA. Vancouver-Seattle Winnipeg-Chicago Detroit-Toronto New York Montreal. Would be an epic Connor McDavid vs. Auston Matthews matchup.

Finland isn’t in Scandinavia
Approximately 98,984 square kilometer Finnish region of Lapland is considered as part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Does that mean if we have NHL player born in Finnish Lapland he is able to participate in the Gimmick team? :P
