ESPN article is good

IMO this is on Lombardi and Burke ... Burke, the loudest guy in the room, especially has to be turfed

The philosphy started somewhere before they hired Torts to execute it

I hadn't heard the part about intentionally hiring a coach who didn't currently have a job. Great thinking guys!

1) Hire someone who no one in the NHL thinks is worthy of coaching, until:
2) Some desperate team panics and hires this idiot.

So now you've got the worst of both worlds! Bad coach with less time to focus on the world cup! :handclap:

Matthews will be on the 2018 Olympic team. No doubt out it. Pavelski looked a bit lost without Thornton feedimg him. Maybe Bowman finds a way to keep Pavelski in the lineup.

I think its cute that a bunch of you still believe the NHL is going to Korea in 2018.

If these players had any pride at all they would show up in Cologne and Paris for the 2017 World Championships to try and restore some dignity in the crest they just embarrassed.

I'm all for new management, but the players underwhelmed every shift.

I'm going to find you and tell your kids about the Easter bunny tooth fairy and Santa Claus. Then give them a bunch of candy right before bedtime. :(

It's cute that you think it's a certainty they won't go.

Because it's more likely this is Bettman calling the IOC's bluff about not paying for travel or insurance.

If NHLers go to SK, this would be my lineup

Gaudreau-Matthews-Kane
Saad-Eichel-Wheeler
Larkin-Pavelski-Kessel
Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Okposo
Oshie

McDonagh-Jones
Gostisbehere-Shattenkirk
Byfuglien-Faulk
Suter

Schneider
Bishop
Hellebuyck

I know many hated how Byfuglien played, but he wasn't that bad to me. Made the mistake on the Duchene first goal but other than that he wasn't bad to me. He is still gonna be one of the 6 best American defensemen in 2018 and with a competent coach he will be just fine.

Pacioretty is another guy with a proper coach who will do well. I wouldn't overreact to his play or Wheeler's play in the tournament.

Larkin with Kessel just makes too much sense. Kessel is at his best when he has another speed guy with him and he and Larkin would mesh very quickly.

John Carlson and JVR specifically have no place on the team any longer. Their positives don't outweigh the negative. Carlson doesn't make enough plays in the puck and gets caught in his own zone way too much. JVR is a poor defender. He's the defender that people think Kessel is.

Jones and Gostisbehere need to be on that team and in a big role. They can generate offense and are only gonna get better defensively in the next year and a half.

The US will have the most talent at their disposal than they've had in a long time IF NHLers go. Time to put them on the team and get over the hump and win a gold

So we're taking Oshie primarily for shootout? He's pretty useless otherwise.

Americans on North America today have out scored the whole US team. The good news I think is this North American concept won't ever happen again. Pretty much every news outlet assessing the US loss has said they can't let it happen again.

This. The guys that did make left something to be desired, even if they didn't choose to be on the roster.

I enjoy the World Championships but the NA rosters are determined by which teams don't make the playoffs. Looking at the last two rosters the US ended up with, I liked the results at tha last two WHC.

Parise was the least of US roster issues. He went all out on every shift as Zach usually does.

I agree that Parise was the least of our issues, I still have a hard time accepting your second point as he didn't do anything out there...they all looked disinterested. I did not see the heart and drive that we saw in 2010 especially from our leaders like Parise and Backes.

I love Parise, always will...but he really didn't step up and show me anything this tournament, he is in line for all the fair criticism as the rest of them are in my opinion.

I am not getting into a debate over if the NHL goes to the Olympics or not...but it always helps after such a horrible butt hurting like this to look to the future for hope and change!! haha kind of reminds me of something else that never happened...oh well..

The future is bright for team USA whenever the best on best get together again. If we have a management team not comprised of Johansson, Burke, Lombardi, Holmgren, etc and an actual progressive minded coach who isn't set in the stone age this should be our lineup.

Gaudreau - Matthews - Kane
Saad - Eichel - Pavelski
Larkin - Galchenyuk - Kessel
Wheeler - T. Johnson - Okposo
Trocheck

McDonagh - Faulk
Shattenkirk - Jones
Carlson - Fowler
Gostisbehere

Bishop
Schneider
Gibson

this is a team I can watch as if they lose, they will be exciting and full of actual skill and energy. I do wish we had a few more defensive options that I can debate between as Suter and Buff didn't do themselves any favors here...Trouba is a wild card, same with Leddy and Krug...Bogosian never reached potential and so many others simply not ready yet.

Names to remember

Max Pacioretty- so shocked at his performance. still can land on a team USA again, but man he looked weak

JVR - did practically nothing out there like the rest of them, shocking.

Derek Stepan - Wasn't good or bad, just vanilla - far better options at center now with the kids coming.

T.J Oshie - always a favorite of mine, but outside of the shootout, doesn't really bring much to the table.

Bobby Ryan - his ship has sailed unfortunately, and even though we likely get new faces in 2-4 years, his window is likely closed.

Zach Parise - just not the same player anymore, I didn't see the heart and passion I once did, he shouldn't get invited back.

Ryan Kesler - no thanks

David Backes - we remember Dave, we remember your crappy play - no thanks

Brandon Dubinsky - like him as a role player in the NHL, not on a best on best

Justin Abdelkader - nothing needed to be said here that hasn't been already

Kyle Palmieri - didn't get a fair shot, was limited to playing with dead weight - has a shot if he continues to be a 30 plus goal scorer - unfairly lumped in with the main culprits

J.T Miller, Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle, Chris Kreider - all big bodies forwards who have some grit and speed...someone from this group could really stand out the next year plus, hoping to see it as could add a lot of depth to our camp rosters and add some tough choices to make.

That lineup could give TC a run for their money NOW...never mind a year and a half from now...and this coming from a Canuck

Yeah, Yeah...ppl gonna argue Matthews isn't ready. I watched him at World Championships and here...I say, He IS!

***
PS: Don't throw Quick under the bus...he wasn't to blame for 6 odd man rushes , including 2-0 breakaway, in first period vs Team Euro...Had bad puck luck vs Canada...it happens...

Quick is literally the only name I haven't blamed. He gave up some ugly softies, but like you said had no help. I just think in 2 years time these other goalies are younger and will have their time to shine over Quick.

Thanks as well, this team can and will hold their own against the worlds best if we get to see it again anytime soon.

Such a different feel from this and even Sochi team to Vancouver. That US team was completely in it. I miss seeing that kind of emotion and hunger on the ice.

Dean Lombardi saying he'd pick Dubinsky, Backes, Abdelkader again over Kessel and Okposo. I hope his idiotic comments seal his fate and he's never allowed to make roster decisions again with USA Hockey. What a clown

This is a team of the names not picked for team USA.

If they both could have the same goaltenders, does anyone really think this second team couldn't hold their own?? love the mobile defense here. lacking star forwards, but fast and gifted younger group of forwards here with a few vets sprinkled in. Not saying they would do any better, but a lot of talent sitting here on the sidelines.

Ryan - T. Johnson - Kessel
Okposo - Smith - Atkinson
Nelson - Coyle - Kreider
Foligno - Stastny - Zucker
Bjugstad

Faulk - Shattenkirk
Fowler - Yandle
Greene - DeKeyser
Leddy

There's a lot of talk about "winning culture", "right culture" in this tournament and NHL. Maybe GMs should take the best players instead of guessing at "guys who care" like Lombardi did. Lol what an idiot.

If there is any kind of best on best in 4 years time I think the U.S. will have a great chance of winning it, they might even be the favorite going in at that time.

This tournament was just a blip and no-one should be that concerned with the result here.
