Patrick was pretty dominant when he was healthy. The issue was that he really never was healthy lol.
Good point. He's still locked in with Wright at #1 right? The Hischier/Patrick draft was weird.
Patrick was was widely considered the top choice up until the Devils won the draft and then Bob McKenzie mocked him first and all the talk shifted. Presumably he had a contact with the Devils that let him know how they felt.
Pretty sure yes. He had 8 out of 10 scouts with him at #1 in the last rankings. If it changes after the WC, it’s most likely a little recency bias imo. Not a knock on Slaf at all, as it’s who I want.Good point. He's still locked in with Wright at #1 right?
First Cooley, now Nemec.I completely disagree on Nemec’s defense he has been more than capable and he has ended lots of plays. That’s a big part of why he’s playing lots and he’s not getting hemmed in and dominanted in his own end whatsoever. He’s not aggressive or physical but he keeps them to the outside and steps at the right time. I’ll refer you to all of the games he’s played.
I’m also not sure how you can say the final 1:30 of a period can tell me all I need to know lol. Jiricek has barely broken any plays up. How can you say he hasn’t allowed a 1-on-1 shot through him when Sweden literally scored doing so. I just completely disagree with you on 90% of that.
Both of the goals he was on for against Sweden he could’ve/should’ve done more. The first one, he drifted back and had a terrible gap. The Swedish forward was able to come in with speed and put a shot through him from a good spot. I didn’t say it was all on him but no goal is really ever on a single player. The 2nd goal he was on for against, he was just too slow. I’ve said that I think he was tired so he does have a bit of an excuse but if he’s that tired he probably should be changing. The Swedish forward didn’t start ahead of him at all and he just got blown out in a foot race.
I’m also not sure why you’re talking about him breaking up plays. He’s barely broken any up. While Jiricek is bigger and stronger, Nemec is clearly a much smarter defensemen who reads the play well and he’s clearly a better skater.
Also not sure how you can talk about Nemec blowing transitions when Jiricek has had quite a few turnovers that could’ve gone really badly in his own end.
The other thing that I’ve been unimpressed by which goes with his skating a bit IMO is how little escapability Jiricek has shown. When he’s been under pressure and doesn’t have an easy out he has been able to do anything to give him self some space and separation from the forechecker. Even when he clearly tried he to couldn’t.
That is something that all of the best defensemen are very good at.
Also think you underrated what Nemec’s done offensively. He hasn’t been amazing offensively and he isn’t creating chances every shift but he’s been involved and done a lot more than just throw wristers and attempt back door passes. He’s walked the line, created space for his teamates , and put his teamates in good spots with smart puck movement. He’s also jumped up in the rush a lot which can help his team offensively even if he doesn’t end up getting the puck. There’s a lot more to creating offense than back door passes and heavy shots and his willingness to get up in the offense and be involved does quite a bit on its own. His off the puck movement is very good offensively. He’s always putting himself in positions to be an option and/or create space for his teammates
I think Nemec’s biggest asset is his IQ and there’s so many smart things big and small that he does throughout a game.
I really like Nemec and he’s my second favourite.First Cooley, now Nemec.
You just love playing the Devils Advocate role, dontcha?
But yeah. I'm not going to sit there and say Nemec won't have a good NHL career because I think he will
He's just not going to provide the same impact as a Slaf or Wright would, in my own humbling (and rambling) opinion.
I’m glad I wasn’t active at that time, tons of terrible takes in hindsight (a Devils team constructed around Patrick and McLeod at center ).I think people have a very selected memory, to read what the vibe about 2017 draft was take a trip down the memory lane here: Prospect Info: - 2017 NHL Draft Part III
It’s amazing that like half the board would rather take Cooley or a defenseman and the other half is paranoid that MONTREAL of all teams would pass on a consensus #1 OA Canadian center to take a foreign winger…when the draft is IN Montreal to boot.Mtl is gonna take Slaf because well....our luck. Just hope the Yotes are willing to pay up to secure Wright
It wouldn't be the most surprising thing if he goes in the top 10. For example Pronman ranked him at #8, when he did his last mock draft. In The Athletic Hockey Show podcast he said some NHL scouts thought it was a reasonable take.Man I've been really impressed with Marco Kasper in this tournament. He really stands out, what a great skater with good hands. I think with good linemates he puts up a lot of points. He's mostly ranked lower half of 1st round, but i think he should go at least 10-15 range.
Really fun. Could have done without Meier's hit, pretty ugly and a good thing he wasn't going fast or it might have been much worse. What a wild period.
Hischier goal! After the previous one that was disallowed.
