U18: World Championship, Lappeenranta & Imatra, Finland

Aho won the SHL championship 24 hours ago, partied all night(probably), flew to Finland and has two goals today..

I wasn't that sold on Kähkönen in the SUI game, he seemed uncertain at times. In this game I think he had some nice saves and overall seemed a lot more solid when the US was all over our zone at times but then the few softies ruined it. But yeah, it is kind of weird to have the goaltending as the question mark while cheering for Finland in a tournament, I mean usually we are at least quite solid on that.

I don't usually watch tournaments/games with age bracket this young so it was strange seeing so many completely irresponsible passes across the blue line, half-assed clearings of the puck from the D zone, so many awful turnovers really. In the same time it's kind of fun, too, when the super-defensive approach still isn't instilled to the playing style.

Eichel looked disinterested for most of the game, except for a few plays where he took over.

Connor is playing a complete game at this tournament, but seems a step slower than his normal USHL pace. Still very dangerous and a good skater.

Kapanen looks like a taller, thinner, unluckier Ho-Sang.

Kyle Connor has been the best forward for team USA, his stock is only rising.

Hanifin has been a beast as well for being as young as he is, very impressed with both.

And all Eichel does is produce yet still gets labeled as I don't see the hype

Well he's compared to MacDavid who destroyed this tournament last year as a double underaged player. Eichel is playing vs. his own age group now and should do more if he really is THAT good imo.

I saw Connor play with the Phantoms in November and he looked a step ahead back then. He's not just a scoring threat now, he carries himself like a complete player. His work ethic is great and he looks to have filled out some.

To anyone rating Kylington higher or a threat to Noah, please watch this tourney. Hanifin is playing sound hockey and showing all what he's hyped up to be offensively. And it's not even his damn draft year!

I don't doubt Eichel's skills as competition to McDavid. I'm just not sure about his competitiveness, but that is probably overanalyzing things. When he wants to, he can power through, finesse around anyone he wants to at any time.

Milano looked gassed today, Tuch looked like he was trying to do too much.

Dougherty was a stud - not as explosive as I'd like, but I like him a hell of a lot more now than earlier in the year. Same for Larkin. The guy has this smooth, unexpected acceleration through the middle of the ice, and can make those quick Reinhart-esque passes that are just good fundamental hockey plays.

well there ya go, that is pretty much how scouts sum up a player - how they perform in a week long tournament compared to a player from a year ago against completely different competition. :shakehead

great insight, appreciare the response.

Dougherty has jumped ahead of Glover and Jacobs for me, he seems to just play the game on a different level then his peers on a more consistent basis.

Tuch is probably feeling the draft pressure talk here, kid might be trying to do to much to try and justify his top 10 ratings by numerous services.

Not really sure what you're getting at? People saw a skills comp and proclaimed him a competitor to Hanifin.

Hanifin's play at the U18 confirms his entire body of work during the year and the fact that he's far superior.

Define "numerous". I've seen 1.

Note : The AmericanDream NHL Draft Service 2014 Top 5 of:

1) Jack Eichel - he's so good he is ranked #1 this year.
2) Alex Tuch
3) Dylan Larkin
4) Sonny Milano
5) Nick Schmaltz

does NOT count.

I have also seen him ranked in the high 20's.
