U18: World Championship, Lappeenranta & Imatra, Finland

The top US line of Eichel-Milano-Tuch have been playing as if they're trying to pass or stick handle the puck into the net.

Eichel in particular seems like he's completely averse to making a simple, effective play. He's got amazing skill but there's a nonchalance about his game that's always been there with him that really bothers me. He pretty much fell asleep during his penalty shot attempt the other night and his casual turnovers on the power play in the first against the Finns today were sad to watch. I really wish somebody could light a fire underneath him because he could be unstoppable if he put more effort forth.

On a positive note, I think Hanifin has been exceptional thus far. He was out of position on Saarela's highlight reel goal but he's pretty much a sure thing with the puck on his stick. I think he's clearly the best defenseman on the US team despite being the only underager.

Nice goal by Eichel, he's not nearly as good as I thought he'd be though. Looks like we will have a SWE-FIN matchup in the quarters.

Eichel looked disinterested for most of the game, except for a few plays where he took over.

Connor is playing a complete game at this tournament, but seems a step slower than his normal USHL pace. Still very dangerous and a good skater.

Kapanen looks like a taller, thinner, unluckier Ho-Sang.

This was probably the worst game I've ever seen Eichel play, and I've seen him around a dozen times. Wouldn't shock me if he had a hand injury. Made some mistakes that I've never seen from him. If this is anyone's first time watching Eichel, that was not a typical game.

Anyway, I continue to be ridiculously impressed with Hanifin. What a player.

predictions for the 1/4 finals.

Czechs over Russia 3-2 (normally I'd pick the Russians...but looks like the Czechs are due for a good tournament.)

USA. takes out Slovakia 4-1

Finland over Sweden (just b/c Finnish hockey is on a roll)

Canada v Swiss. Canada wins. (just b/c that's the way is is suppose to be...but one of these tournaments the Swiss will win it all...just a matter of time.)

Not this team. Urama is no Karri Kivi or Erkka Westerlund. Team hasn't shown any semblance of a working offensive or defensive system and the goalie is no Saros or Rask.

An ISS scout's all-star team through the round robin:

Dylan Beston @DeeBesty

First line forwards: C - Jack Eichel (USA), LW - William Nylander (SWE), RW - Kasperi Kapanen (FIN)
Second line forwards: C - David Pastrnak (CZE), LW - Jake Virtanen (CAN), RW - Adrain Kempe (SWE)
Third line forwards: C - Connor Bleackley (CAN), LW - Jakub Vrana (CZE), Frank Milano (USA)
Fourth line forwards: C - Brendan Perlini (CAN), LW - Anton Karlsson (SWE), Oskar Lindblom (SWE)

First line D: LD - Haydyn Fleury (CAN), RD - Noah Hanifin (USA)
Second line D: LD - Roland McKeown (CAN), RD - Domink Masin (CZE)
Third line D: LD - Jack Glover (USA), Gustav Forsling (SWE)

My two goaltenders would be... The Starter - Mason MacDonald (CAN), and Back Up - Alex Nedeljkovic

So Karlsson (0 pts, -3) has played better than Fiala, awesome!

well, none of the teams have really impressed or have looked like they have their **** together. So, I just went with my gut.

Yeah, he did say "his perspective" admittedly. Although a player can certainly look better than his numbers if you look for details..

It looks to me like he's emphasizing long term potential over performance at this particular tournament.

Not really sure what you're getting at? People saw a skills comp and proclaimed him a competitor to Hanifin.

Hanifin's play at the U18 confirms his entire body of work during the year and the fact that he's far superior.

No. People saw a 16 year old D-man making the swedish junior league his ***** and hold his own in the SHL and proclaimed him a competitor. If you're basing your scouting of Kylington on some exhibition thing with hungover AHL and SHL players you need to go back to the drawing table.
Not saying Hanifin isn't better at the end of the day, he's a fantastic player, but come on, Kylington is a brilliant prospect in his own right and may very well challenge Hanifin next year.

I saw Team USA play in Cedar Rapids last month and Eichel looked totally disinterested the whole game. Was super floaty and barely tried to make plays. Milano was the best player on Team USA that night.

He has top end skating and hands. So, he looks like a forward playing D. His hockey sense and decision making are questionable.

USA leads 2-0 early vs Slovakia. Eichel potted a loose puck on a goal mouth scramble in the first minute, while MacLeod scored a few minutes later on a 5v3. Eichel also drew an assist on the second goal.
