U18: World Championship, Lappeenranta & Imatra, Finland

So, this is why Finland lose 10-0:
- Bad coached team
- Only few of our players have played with men more than 10 games (Rantanen, Saarela, Kapanen, Lammikko)
- Bad age group, but we'll be back next year and we're a lot better.
- Sami Niku is the only defenceman who has played against men this year (in mestis) over 10 games
- Joni Tuulola has played 2 games in Liiga
- Our goaltenders have played 0 games with men
- Our forwards games with men: Sebastian Aho (3 games in Liiga), Manu Honkanen (4 games in Liiga), Joel Kiviranta (1 game in Liiga) and Teemu Lämsä (1 game in Liiga)

But I don't blame our boys. It all about coaching and Rauli Urama needs to be fired. We don't want this to happen again.

Considering the players are U18, it seems odd to have whether they've played against men as the defining factor. Very few players in general at 17/16 can keep up with men (for long stints) in pro leagues. It usually then means exceptional talent and/or advanced physicality, i.e. whether they've played against men is just a secondary indication of something else, and a standard that is not really realistic to hold them against. Quick look at Sweden's roster suggests most play in junior league(s) as well, although I'd imagine the overall level of play and talent there is higher than in Finland's corresponding league(s).

Yes it's true. But still our coaching is horrible and this age group is not good enough.

But like I said, we'll come back next year.

This game say's about as much about the relative strength of Sweden's and Finland's junior programs as the U20 final. I. e. jack ****.

No one's talking about just this game though, but the tournament (which is at least close to being best-on-best) and most of all the long term trend of Sweden producing a lot more talent per any given generation.

Sweden of course has the bigger population and the higher number of registered players, but looking at the U20 category the difference is actually not that huge (48 000 vs. 37 000) So what gives, is the question.

Yeah no. All of their top players play in pro leagues.

3/7 d-man play in SHL/Allsvenskan and all of their forwards except for Törnqvist and Ottoson have played in SHL/Allvenskan.

So I was right when I told u where finnish players have played. Thanks for the information.

I was just going by this

when clicking individual player bios to me at least shows most as playing for the majority of their seasons as not in SHL/Allsvenskan, most only have a couple games registered at that level. Maybe the data is not updated then?

I know it's only a couple of games for some guys but most of the Finns didn't even have that.

Few of the Swedish players could be considered regulars with men this season. Our D is pretty experienced especially with the addition of Aho, the forwards not so smuch.

I like to think that Allsvenskan is a major difference maker. It's a great league for development.

Yes. Allsvenskan is a much better league for development than the SHL. Just look at the development of Collberg vs. Wennberg. Collberg was considered as the much greater talent of the two but he got stuck in Frölunda, meanwhile Wennberg went from J20 to become a top player for Djurgården in just one season. Now there's no question who's better of the two. Maybe it would be the opposite if Collberg had played in Allsvenskan & Wennberg in the SHL.

Hold your horses. This is just one loss under worst coach ive witnessed in my life. I dont understand why people are even contrasting this to the u20 tournament. We had worlds best u20 players in that tournament and we won rightly so. We even had key absentees in that squad and with Franchise nr1 center in Barkov not playing and he could play still next year we would have won sweden 10-0 there also. Everything is relative that was just freak loss under badly coached team and the players gave up. Just keep Urama away from finnish hockey in future and nothing like this will happen again.

"Here's the deal boys: We're going to lose this game."

Second clip:

"Here's the deal boys, I won't be joining the 3rd period, I saw Kalervo Kummola in the town, we're going to a sauna. You can finish the game if you want, you don't have to because we've lost this game."
