Finland sure looks lost right now. The far from optimal preparation and start for the tournament is obviously taking its toll. The goalie controversy, the head coach departing mid-tournament, and not being able to at least lose with respectable numbers to USA and Canada...

The good news still is that Switzerland and Russia aren't really a step above the top teams in Group B, so the result barely matters from the Finnish perspective. This is mostly good news for the Group B winner, as I believe they'll still take Russia/Switzerland over Finland. Although, I suppose that would require Finland getting their act together - and soon.

I was shocked when I saw the score.lol

Then I read about Canada game. Lots of entertainment.

Congrats to Denmark!

That Czech Japan was always for first and still is. I think whoever wins avoids north america whether in OT or regulation?

This might be good for Czechs as it'll be a nice kick in pants!

Or they lose tonight and leave tournament with 3 losses in a row after a quarterfinal slaughter.lol

I just realized this was the Czech's first Olympics, so congrats to them as well.

I assume whoever loses this game faces the slaughterhouse of USA/CAN, but I couldn't really find anything online.

I've enjoyed watching Japans top line (#15-14-16). Toko Haruka (#14) is probably their best player. Shiga Akane (#16) potted 2 goals against USA in their last meeting, so she can put the puck in the net.

China really messed up their chances and now their only hope to advance is a Danish OT win against Sweden.

China should be pissed. The Swedish player got a shot off on the breakaway before she was tripped and they still gave her the penalty shot that ultimately decided the game.

Sorry to butt in with this take in the middle of talking of the Canada-Russia game

But if we're going to take away womens hockey due to it being extremely unbalanced then do we take away mens basketball in the summer olympics for the same reason? Its so one sided that opposing players ask the US team for autographs after games.

It's the U.S. A big gap. Spain. And nobody else.

Or does this only apply to womens sports?

You could say the same for Bobsled and more so Luge for the Germans

Thank you and yes... loser gets slaughtered and goes home in quarters.

Winner gets a shot at 3rd in the group which I thought would be Finland but they lost to Switzerland. So winner gets one of Switzerland, Russia or Finland. Still an underdog but much better than having to face Canada or US. I assume Czech/Japan match is a 1 goal game.. no idea who wins. We split the last 2 matches to my knowledge.

Keep in mind I went to bed thinking it'd be clear we beat Denmark and Finn's would beat Swiss. I also had no idea Russia/Canada would be a masked event.haha So I've been wrong about a lot.

I did not even see Swedens games against Czech and China. Lost all hope when we lost to Japan and went into depression. But i will watch Sweden vs Denmark. The winner goes to playoffs, if im right.

probaly this qf:

Canada - Sweden (this is gonna get ugly)
USA - Czechia
Japan - Russia
Finland - Swiss

What is going on with Canada wearing masks during the game? Kind of cringeworthy.

Have they been doing that the entire tournament?

Edit: Read through the forum and saw Russia had a close contact. Assuming that is why they wore masks.

The difference is that USA has actually lost and failed to win gold. 2004 Olympics, two losses in the group stage and a semifinal loss vs Argentina. Even lost vs France last year in Tokyo. It's the USA women's team that's been more impressive with 7 straight gold medal.

I still think the USA men’s team would be just as dominant. Has been major players absent from Olympic teams recently.

All things being equal no injuries (don’t believe Curry, Lebron and a handful of others of the USA’s best played in the most recent Olympics)… USA destroys all nations in basketball.

But they still play the game because anything can happen. Just like all of the other sports being played at the Olympics.

Yes they were, just the commentators didn't inform the viewing audience at the time. I watched 3 different recaps of the game before I finally heard that between periods there was the test results and that both teams had the option of wearing the masks. Would have been helpful to hear that information. They manage to repeat every other tidbit of info ad nauseum, but somehow they didn't mention that. Still Russia has a history of being rat bastards so it played right into that narrative. 329 000 deaths (reported) from covid in Russia. Good job Vlad :thumbu:

Just wanted to make sure since I just quickly read about it but didn't fact check.

I posted the same thing on page 4, post #91. Ever since the Dream Team, the gap has become smaller.

France won the silver in Tokyo and Australia won the bronze.

That penalty by Harvey could be a game changer.Terrible 1 to take with all the momentum on your side

Ultimately everyone else is so bad this game is totally meaningless....we've seen some years where you can argue the US could be upset in the QF but not this year

If only more women's hockey games were competitive like this one it would make the tournament so much more fun to watch. As much as I'm rooting for Canada to win it does suck for it always being a two team fight for the gold.

USA had some good chances off Canada turnovers but Canada made some solid saves.

1-0 Canada after 1.
