Without Russia, the WJC should be reduced to 5 teams

Now would you relegate USA or would they have their spot granted and Czechs would be replaced by winner of D1B?

USA should of course be granted a spot, just as Canada should be granted the gold medal already. We can't have actual on ice results decide these things. Best team on paper should be declared winners.

This tournament has shown once again that the mode can remain as it is. Of course there will always be underdogs who suffer defeat high, especially in the RR. But that's normal! In other sports as well. There are generally favored nations (CAN, US, FIN, SWE). But CZE, GER, SUI and prove again and again that they can be tough opponents. And Russia hasn't been a gold machine e.g. in the last 10 years either. The tournament should remain as it is. That's okay!

Might've been the worst day to make this thread.

Latvia plays a close game with the Swedes

Swiss plays a close game with Canada

Czech (Who lost to Latvia) is beating USA 3-1.

I’ve never seen a poster look so wrong so quickly before as the OP 😂

Other than the time @Mersss said Mantha wouldn’t even get a 1st and then like 25mins later suddenly got traded for a 1st + Vrana…

Obviously a terrible idea. The kids playing there aren’t worried about blowouts or crowd size or TV audiences.

Excluding countries from events like this does nothing to make them more competitive.

There’s really no point in watching all these blow outs, the games are absolutely boring and predictable.

It should be Canada, USA, Sweden and Finland play each other twice and then the two top teams play a best of 3 series for gold. Same goes for bronze - 3rd and 4th team battle for it.

The last 5th spot should go to the best team in D1B. The worst team in the elite division will be relegated.

This should bring much more interest to fans watching it.
Do you think your need of getting entertained is more important than letting the young players compete in the yearly YOUTH tournament?

So because of Russia's absence we should remove... five other teams from the tournament? That doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

It isn't happening. The same teams from this tournament will be in this winters tournament as it should be.

They're still not even doing relegation/promotion?

Figured they would at least bring that back, but I guess not.

They will be let back into the tourney when Russia has left Ukraine.

I still don't see the purpose in deciding to punish Russian hockey players for something they didn't do, but it is what it is. :dunno:

Not sure if you are being intentionally obstinant here or just woefully incorrect to the global state of international football (soccer), but there would definitely be more winners. The World Cup and other major competitions like the Euros are not just the same 5 countries swapping Semifinal appearances. Italy has won multiple World Cups, and in the last few years failed to qualify for the World Cup, won Euros and failed to qualify for the World Cup again.

This + 4 years can be quite the gap for teams. Spain had that great run 2008-2012 but then their stars got old and that was it. Some teams "golden generations" do not last much longer than 4 years.

If it's boring, don't watch it then:laugh:

Belgium's window is closing and they haven't won a thing. Some golden generations just come and pass without hardware too.

RR games are generally inconsequential and not worth making any sort of policy decisions on. A non-USA, Finland, Sweden, Canada or Russian team has made the semis nearly half the time over the past two decades, 9 times in 20 years. Granted, they've only medaled 2 of those times, but still goes to show that it's not the same four teams in the SFs every single year; you've got nearly a 50% chance that one of them is not part of it.

So to collectively turf out these five other teams means you're taking that near 50% rate of a non-top 5 SF appearance away. The argument would be much stronger if we saw numbers like, once over 20 years.

Winning the whole thing, sure, there's almost no chance a non-top 5 (now 4) team is winning it in any year, I'd give those odds well below 5% in any year, but that shouldn't exclude participation. And almighty Sweden has like 2 Golds, as many as the hapless and oft excluded Czechs.

Maybe you should educate yourself if you believe the majority of Russian population is against the war… and you should also read about why sport is important for totalitarian regimes.
