I don’t think see Levshunov being Verbeek type pick so I almost feel like if he does go for him, he believes that a lot of scouting concerns of him are overbbown. Totally trust our staff with dmen.

I feel like it’s still pretty wide open tbh
It definitely is, but this year also does feel similar to 2014, where it was kind of considered wide open after 1, a semi-consensus was built and then the entire top 10 was probably as chalk as we’ve ever seen. I hope that doesn’t happen this year but I feel quite a few drafts where consensus is all over the place end up being somewhat predictable.

I could honestly be talked into about 7 guys. I just want us to go d because I trust Madden picking d over f.

We're better at drafting d-men and goalies beyond the top-10. We've been hitting on our top-10 forward selections in recent drafts: Zegras (2019, 9th OA), McTavish (2021, 3rd OA), and Carlsson (2023, 2nd OA).

Then we added Gauthier (2022, 5th OA) in a trade that sent Drysdale (2020, 6th OA) to Philly.

If we adhere to the trend that we are batting for the norm at forward beyond the top-10, but far above the norm with drafting d-men and goalies beyond the top-10, then maybe there should be a leaning towards drafting a top-end forward like a Lindstrom or Demidov with the #3 OA pick.

I copied this from the main prospects board from a poster named Caser who lives in Latvia and annually scouts all the Russian prospects in great detail. He rated Silayev #1 above Demidov. Interestingly, his take is very different from the video above in terms of thinking the game. Given that he lives in Russia (or close enough) I think his opinion is well worth giving considerable weight to. He would consider him at 2OA despite mediocre offensive skills.

1. LHD Anton Silayev
While everyone keeps mentioning how well Anton Silayev skates for a 6’7” guy, for me what stands out even more than that is how smart he is – in his debut season on the KHL level he has been almost flawless in terms of the positional game, for me that’s something pretty much unseen. Naturally for a big kid like him a lot of stuff should still be worked on, he will need quite some time for that too, but the only long-term concern I see in him is the rather mediocre puck skills, I doubt that it can be improved too much (which is also why I’m not a fan of the Victor Hedman comparison), therefore overall his attacking upside is doubtful, aside from the powerful shot, of course. With that being said if I’m an NHL GM, I wouldn’t be hesitating much to take him at 2nd this year, he looks that good to me.

Yeah I don't understand why anyone that watched him play in the K would come away thinking he doesnt think the game well. Defensively he's aggressive but very selective about when he closes on guys. I guess you could say he's not creating offense from the blue line like you'd like to see but that's more knowing your limitations against more developed players IMO. In MHL games I saw him make some nice skill plays at the blue line and even deke guys to get to the net.

If a guy is 6'7 and can punch like Rempe and skate better than most sub-6' players... all he would have to be is somewhat above average in hockey IQ and soft skills for me to love him at 3OA.
Couldn’t have said it any better myself

I agree with your list. Too bad we can't find a way to squeeze MTL a little to swap draft picks.

Time for PV to start sending signals about our interest in Demidov if he's available ... :naughty:

You'd want to send signals about Lindstrom (that's who the Habs want) but yes if the Ducks would want to drop to 5, I think there's a deal to be had. Montreal knows CBJ is likely to take Lindstrom at 4 and would want to get ahead of them.

Does Anaheim want more picks though? Is a Struble enough of an add to your defense to make the swap? I think that's the issue.

He has to be a high end defensive presence to be worthy of a top 3 pick, and that's coming from someone who has been pushing for Silayev for several months now. The intrigue there is the potential to be elite at suppressing offense, nothing to do with fighting or just size alone.

For a third overall that is a long time to wait. Teams picking this high generally rely on their top of the draft talent having an impact during that timeframe.
IMO this is the wrong draft to be expecting guys to step in and make an immediate impact.

@tomd covered it pretty well but I think past Celebrini you're looking at a lot of guys who will need 2-3 years to be ready for regular NHL time. Maybe Dickinson and maybe Lindstrom could get in there quicker.

I don't think waiting for Silayev's NHL contract to expire would be a killer. Yeah teams often have to build out of the draft but I don't think the idea that top 3-5 picks need to be guys that are planned to step in ASAP. A lot of the time that leads to harm to development from rushing kids in.

After all this time, I've changed my vote. Dickinson has won me over. He just screams what this team needs.
I've warmed up to him a lot. I think my preferences as of today would be

Celebrini (not happening obviously)
Silayev
Dickinson
Buium
Demidov
Lindstrom
Levshunov
Iginla
Yakemchuk
Catton

I'd be generally fine with any of those guys. Anyone else, I'd be upset, e.g. I do not want this team to draft Parekh. Could be dead wrong about him but I don't see him hitting the 50+ point OFD benchmark and his defensive issues are deeply concerning.

If we could somehow add the 10th I still think Helenius would be a prime target. I think 3rd is too early but he just seems to strike a the boxes except being over 6'2

Certain fans here would take a boxer over a hockey player with 3rd overall.
Its a great thing to have your top skilled players be able to go in the trenches.

Panthers are a good example of this. Top skill that go along with willingness to get dirty. They don't have any Ryan Reaves types because they got guys who can play top mins AND take care of things. When the playoffs roll around, those are the guys you want.
