Can't be understated more. Not really being talked about, but as of today ( July 3 ) the Jets DO NOT have a backup goalie IMO. And by a backup, I mean someone who could play 20-25 games and actually have a reasonable expectation of being able to win them. And a backup that if Helly does suffer any kind of injury, we aren't automatically writing off those games he's hurt.

We don't have that guy.
But our new guy trained with Helle’s guy:sarcasm:

I hope this Brossoit guy can play like this all the time and show some consistency, game in and game out. He was fantastic vs the Wild, and we could have ourselves a great backup to Helle, at a very affordable price. I was very impressed with this guy- best player on the ice. in my opinion.

There's no way I'm getting excited after one game
Ben Scrivens had a 59-save shutout
Pavelec had 3 straight shutouts
Brossoit could be good, but one game means nothing

Let's not forget the whole EDM Dubnyk factor. I am cautiously optimistic that the Jets could have stumbled into a sweet deal with Laurent and snagged the next Dubnyk who just needed a competent team infront of him in order to look good. Last night he was positionally sound and looked calm and cool. Sure he was getting lucky with some bounces and wasn't facing a strong opponent but it was enough to give me optimism about the aforementioned Dubnyk scenario

But those guys were starters. We are looking at a guy who will probably play 20-25 games against weaker opponents. It's really hard to gauge things from one game for sure, but he seems likea guy who could handle himself in that situation. My Edmonton buddies said he actually wasn't that bad. Third period meltdowns from the Oilers D ruined his stats.

I also heard that he was better than his stats indicated due to the Edmonton effect.

Whatever your estimated probability of Brossoit being an acceptable backup was before last night's game, surely it went up to whatever degree? I mean, it couldn't have gone DOWN.

Brossoit would be arbitrary. But if he does succeed in Winnipeg it would likely be us to have to trade him before he'd sign a contract for what would be his new team.

Off topic, but I think Comrie gets traded this season.

I was whining when we got him but changed my tune a little last night. Sure it was one game, but it was much better than I had originally hoped for. If he can keep that kind of play and composure as the back up, I’m very happy with this acquisition

This guy looks promising. Plus he's got a cool haircut! Anyone know if he's a UFA after this season?

True - but Brossoit looked good doing it. Good technique, not a bunch of athletic leaping and flopping.

I didn't realize he was only 25, he has some upside. His numbers were actually pretty good with the Oilers in 16-17 when they made the playoffs. His numbers last year are probably a reflection of the Oilers going off the rails. Hope he is another hidden gem that Edmonton bungled. Just win us 10 games or so, Laurent. Let Helle do the rest.

I was glad he made it through a game (hell, even through a PERIOD), without getting a concussion.

Agreed. But he really looked solid and fundamentally sound in net. None of that flukey Pavelec flopping around stuff that works occasionally, but not consistently.
