Just want to clarify, it’s not Andersen’s fault. But my issue is that we never get a timely save from him. That is what I believe is holding him back from being an elite goaltender. He doesn’t make key saves in big moments. All the best goaltenders do, it just seems like Freddy never does.
for us oldtimers in this forum we remember Grant Fuhr. Oilers were so all offence they would win games 7-6 6-4, 8-6 but what Fuhr did was make that key save when the Oilers came back and took a lead or shut things down in the 3rd. He gave up 4 but never that back breaking goal.

Oh and back in the day a GAA of 4.00 was pretty good lol

There is a difference between what you say and what others say. This I agree with and it does hold him back, goalies like vasy, rask and others will make the huge saves no one expected and Andersen can’t make those. But saying he 100% should’ve had that is just not right, that was a 40g scoring winner walking down the slot open with a crisp pass

So yea, he got open and a shot in close... Half posters say you cant blame Freddy.. fine... But look at the saves Murray and Helle make to keep their team in the game !! Campbell monster saves when we broke down.

Timely saves are so important to maintaining momentum..no way should this be a 1 goal game. Frustrating that Freddy has a knack for giving up goals at the worst possible times.
Our second goal went riggt threw Helleybuck as well.

Leafs, 32 shots, 2 goals.
Jets, 16 shots, 1 goal.

The stats say Andersen is matching the vezina winner in SV%.

I'm by no means an "Andersen guy" but tonight isn't the night to pile on him after two.
13 high danger scoring chances to 1. two of our high danger chances went in out of 13. One out of one for them.

I just posted and said the entire shift was a disaster and can't be blamed on Andersen...

But I'm starting to reconsider.

What's frustrated me is that the leafs have dominated play like that all game against Winnipeg. The leafs have taken dozens of shots like that.

Then one mix up, Winnipeg has one... just one dominating shift (that the leafs have had ALL game) and they immediately just take one shot and score.

Do the leafs have a goalie problem or a "finish" problem? I'm not so sure anymore.

Im probably considered an Andersen critic, and I agree (and posted) that the entire shift was a disaster, especially after a goal. Not just in Andersen.

However, I also agree with the rest of your post and I can say confidently this is what most "Andersen haters" are talking about. It's not that he's a bad goalie, or that the Leafs are defensive dynamos and never at fault outside of the goalie. But he consistently lets in ill timed goals and is often the second best goalie in a game.

Ps. I think he's had a pretty good game tonight, and my opinion of him is about his play over the last year and a half.

Exactly. When aren't we?
When's the last time we had a great goalie?

There are very few, if any, really great goalies nowadays. Even Price is not in the same league as Broduer or Roy or Belfour or Hasek. With the cap the way it is, we won't even have better than slightly above average goalie unless he is drafted by us. So don't count on great goaltending for a long time. Leafs will have to win with an Andersen caliber goalie.

I haven't seen anything that Helleybuck has saved that he shouldn't have. Have you?

There have been a couple that he's saved that Andersen probably wouldn't. Like the short handed breakaway.

Elite goalies are not easy to acquire; second a lot of teams have gone on to win the cup with good goalies (not elite goalies). You dont need a vezina goalie to go deep in the playoffs.

You need good defensive structure and timely goals on the opposition

agreed, but you also need a goalie who can make saves. Someone else mentioned it. The leafs can play perfect for 18 minutes of the period and have 1 break down and it’s always a goal. Every team has breakdowns but their goals bail them out. Andersen has to start bailing out our defense when they do make a bad play.

but I can’t honestly sit here and say that they have been awful defensively this season. They’ve been alright but it’s just annoying how every time we do have a break down it’s a goal against

Lol the Fred debate is so tiresome. Fred has simply not been good enough for essentially a calendar year.

Today's goal was not his fault as it was a strong chance, but the reason many of us have an issue with him is because he simply has lost the ability to bail out the (much improved defense) on virtually any good chance.

What I'm saying is be smart about it because that could have been the difference between 2-1 and 3-1 and that's HUGE
I get it...but that is never the time to just let it go.
If it was incidental contact, yes. But when a player just basically drives non-stop through your goalie, you need to rip his head off, penalty or not.

Are you upset that people are being rational and giving Campbell more then 3 periods to jump on him?
Wait what does this even mean? I’m saying that just because one goalie who is OUR goalie let’s in a goal, doesn’t mean we have to pile on the hate, whilst another of our goalies let in a goal and we don’t say anything. And if the excuse is that we won that game, then Sit around and wait for the game to end before talking about timely goals
