Button has been wrong about things before.

Niku is closer to the NHL right now. We'll see if that continues. Personally, I would love to see both of them reach the NHL, but there is little doubt in my mind that Niku is the better player right now.

Niku would hardly be the first 7th rounder to reach the NHL, so I would also be interested in hearing what makes you so adamant about your belief that he isn't close to the NHL, or that Stanley will end up the better player.

Most hockey people like Stanley

Yup, find that those that watch him regularly have positve views of him, while the analytical crowd has negative views.

Analytically you will take his first couple of seasons and an injured third season in the O and come to a negative conclusion. Watching him, his spike in play during his second season, his growth offensivly in play, carrying the puck more, getting PP time, and see a strong trend upward for the last year and a half, and conclude that he is trending in the right direction.

Factor in his size and the fact taller D men have historically taken longer to develop, I have high hopes for Stanely being a second pairing Dman that could play a physical intimidating game for us.

If Morrissey is our Enstrom replacement, my hope is Stanley is our Buff replacement in 3 to 5 years.

....which is patently ridiculous.

of coarse it is you disagree with it. this list was taken after this last season so he could have changed his mind on stanley after 1 more season of watching him play but he didn't .

going back to his 15 final ranking he had connor 6th harkins 23rd and roslovic 28th. which a lot of folks around here agreed with. so he likes roslovic, still thinks he is top 50 why is it patently ridiculous that he thinks Stanley might be a little better.

I still look at him as a long term project. I fear however, some people are gonna go all negative on him again based on his Memorial cup (assuming he plays). He'll be rusty as ****

In a few years if he can be a 3rd pairing guy who can move up into the 2nd pairing to cover an jury for a week or 2 I would be over the moon....I know that isn't fantastic value at the 17th pick but it is what it is....

But according to some, Stanley was selected in the first round thus proving that he deserved to be selected in the first round. That is reinforced by 'hockey people like him'. Hockey people like Ents, apparently.

I don't think anybody, experts included has a very good idea of how he will turn out at this point. Selecting him was a gamble. We will have to wait for the wheel to stop spinning to find out if it was a winning bet or not.

Hockey people miss on about 30% of first round picks... ;)

Ya....and thats not bad. All the D taken after him have struggled and even some before. In hindsight if we really needed a quality D we needed to move up and get McAvoy or Chychrun......but that's all pretty easy to say after the fact.

This could be stated for about 85% of all draft picks.

And there were several mocks that had Stanley going in the first round, which reinforced that he could, and did, go in the first.

Everyone misses--humans and machines. If you'll recall, old PCS had Yakupov at 1.

I'm guessing it also had Scheifele behind Couturier and Lindholm behind Forsberg.

Anyhow, other than the immediate masochistic chuckle I had over the pick and what it meant for HF Jets discourse, my only thoughts on Stanley have been faint hope and genuine curiosity as to why they feel he's an outlier.

How is he an outlier. Mckenzie asked 10 scouts who had him at 22. Thats 10 out of 10 pro scouts plus ours.

Many people said it before the fact too. Funnily enough, they weren't "hockey people".

The outlier is, regardless of what scouts say, players who are similar in production and size to Stanley don't pan out frequently. Far less frequently then many other available players.

Hence why Stanley will have to be an outlier to be successful.

Otherwise he's the norm in the data set.
