All the streets in the town I live in are named after either Canadian Cities or Native American groups. We do have a Thatcher Street... not sure why they haven't renamed it yet...

A lot of posts outline comparables like Valabik. How early on was Valabik identifiable as a disaster? Was it commonly accepted before he ever played for the Thrashers or did it take a few NHL seasons?

I actually recall that he was drawing a tonne of comparisons to Chara. I remember people saying he had really taken big strides in his play since coming over from Slovakia U20. They said Kitchener was crafting him into a shutdown defencemen and that given enough time to develop his skating more he could end up a Norris contender...

I wasn't a thrashers fan at the time but I remember reading up on him prior to the draft. It all just seems so familiar...
I remember reading a few Thrashers features on Valabik and how everyone in the locker room loved him instantly, how he was a personality guy and hard worker and that is why he was selected so high. I even remember a Penguins piece on him about how he has "shifted" into a more AHL leadership role to protect prospects and be a team leader for them.. when you shift to a AHL leadership role it basically means you aren't a good enough hockey player to do anything at the NHL level.

This final B Mac ranking has him at 13th.

Most people had him in the top 15 by end of season, he was a bit of a late riser too though always expected to go in the 1st round.

It was a different era though. Size was everything. Smalll players get a better look see now.

There is still a lot of faith put into big guys, that era is still happening. Thats why Stanley went in the 1st and DeBrincat in the 2nd.

Warren Rychel, Spitfires GM, on illegal curve, stated Stanley showed the biggest improvement from his rookie to sophomore season, they have ever seen.

As well:
- numbers reflect his role, not skill.
- solid puck handling, passing and possession skills.
- plays with an edge, tough to play against, physical game
- limited poweplay due to 1d 4f pp unit. Will see more pp mins next season.
- played against other teams top lines
- pivots very well for a big man, and will get better.

Basically much of what I was stating a couple of months ago in the draft thread, and being told by a few on here that Stanley had none of those skills, did not play a physical game, not a solid skaters ect..

Stanley is going to be an example of why it's important to look beyond the numbers, and actually watch a player before declaring what their game is.

Next season all his analytical numbers will improve, and magically his game will inherit all the traits that were seemingly non existent a few months prior.

I hope everyone who panned the pick is cheering for him to succeed, I know I am.

Most prospects take a step forward in their draft +1 season and growth is pretty natural for kids at this age. Logan needs to take a decent step forward just to keep up. I am expecting his numbers to improve or we are in trouble. As far as him inheriting traits that were seemingly non existent that seems like a stretch. Hopefully, he builds on his base and improves his skating but I am not expecting him to turn into a nimble rushing D man with slick offensive skills or anything? He will need to assert himself more offensively 5v5 though and that is one of the things I will be expecting.

If Thompson is back and they roll the 1-4 again and Sergachev is back I am wondering how Stanley's PP usage will increase much, perhaps more on the 2nd unit? That would help his raw scoring numbers if it happens though.

I am glad Rychel has his prospects back but I would expect nothing less. He did improve allot last season so we can hope that arc continues.

Anyways up at em Logan I hope he enjoys his first prospects camp in the Peg.

That is exactly the reason why I am more optimistic about his future than I was initially at the time we made the selection. His puck skills in his own end already appear to be quite good. I think the key thing for him will to be improve his quickness so that he can effectively defend against quicker forwards.

I think the key thing for him will to be improve his quickness so that he can effectively defend against quicker forwards.

That and his hockey IQ. Part of that is instinct and can't be improved but part of it is experience. He can learn to think the game quicker and better. I suppose that a lot of his flaws are, at least potentially fixable. You can teach gap control but you can't teach height.

I'm not optimistic in the least but I am somewhat hopeful. I wish the kid well and of course want to see the Jets succeed. My opinion that this was a horrible pick and a completely stupid trade up doesn't lead to wanting either Stanley or the Jets to fail.

Not going to lie. Prior to the draft, I had heard of this guy maybe twice. When the jets traded up for the 18 spot, I had hoped they were doing it for a big left shot D. And then they called Logan Stanley. A gigantic left shot D! I've watched some video. His mobility needs a bit of work. He will get there. Just imagine a Myers/Stanley pairing. I'm gonna put a bit of faith in Chevy on this one. He's earned a gamble. This pick will not make or break this team.

Personally I do not think this was a back pick at all given that I think there is some nice potential upside and his floor may very well be higher than what most people think.

To my viewing his hockey instincts in his own end were not bad, just too slow. He did not have the 'live grenade' style of puck handling.

It was a bad pick, even a horrible pick in the sense that there were many better players available when he was taken or at 22 after someone else took him, IMO. Those other players were not 6'7. But then this is hockey not basketball. 6'7 is not automatically a desirable thing in and of itself.

By better players I mean players with better odds of being successful NHL'ers. I also mean players who have been contributing more to winning games for their teams right now. I don't think there is any room to disagree about his floor. His floor is complete bust. His ceiling right now might be Chara. It is his chances of reaching or coming close to his ceiling that is being debated. I'm sure there is a wide range of opinion on where his most likely landing spot is too. I would be happy with a solid, reliable 3rd pair D. I also think he will take 1-2 years longer to arrive at his landing spot than many others available would have.

Before the draft I was hoping for at least 1 and maybe 2 higher than that. The pick of Stanley has forced me to lower my expectations.

Is myer's reach overrated? I think stanley's is similar which is quite useful. I also like myer's breakouts which i can see stanley replicate.

Debrincat would have been nice but there is still value to big and quick which i hope stanley turns into.

I'll be honest I really wanted McAvoy, Fabbro, Kunin, and I would have loved Chychrun at 18 but sadly this was the year we didn't get the puck luck I wanted but we seemed to get the pick TNSE wanted so time will tell.

Umm no it's not. He is far more likely to be a Valabik than a Chara.
