I was going through the list of players drafted by Ferguson, and Hawerchuk in '81, and Selanne in ''88 were his only real good first round picks.
In '79 he drafted Jimmy Mann with the 19th overall, Quebec drafted Goulet 20th, Edmonton Lowe with 21 so 2 HOFers followed. He did get Dave Christian in the 2nd round, Thomas Steen in the 5th and Tim Watters in the 6th.
In '80 he drafted Babych with the 2nd overall, good player, who he traded for Ray Neufeld in 85. Drafted after Babych were Denis Savard (3), Larry Murphy (4), Paul Coffey (6).
In '82 he drafted Jimmy Kyte 12th OA. David Ellett was a good find with the 75th pick.
In '83 he drafted Andrew Mc Bain 8th overall, one ahead of Cam Neely. Bobby Dollas went at #14, acquired in the Dave Christian trade. Dollas had a good career. Was traded to Quebec for Stu Kulak. He did get Bob Essensa in the 4th round.
In '84 Peter Douris was taken in the 2nd round (30 OA). Winnipeg's first (Doug Bodger) was traded to Pittsburgh for Randy Carlyle.
In '85 he drafted Ryan Stewart, who played 3 NHL games, 18th OA. Early 2nd round picks included Sean Burke, Joe Niewendyk, and Mike Richter. Frederik Olausson was taken in the 4th round.
In '86 he drafted Pat Elyniuk with the 8th OA. Brian Leetch was the next pick. He did get Teppo Numminen with the 2nd rd. pick at #29
In '87 he drafted Bryan Marchment at 16th OA. Marchment had a pretty good career. He was traded under Mike Smith for Troy Murray (who was later traded for Steve Bancroft) and Warren Rychel (traded for Tony Joseph).
Jets fans should appreciate how well Chevy has done to build this current team, whereas previous Jets GMs kept us mediocre.

In fairness to Fergie, Mike Smith was worse.
1989: Drafts Stu Barnes at #4. Barnes went on to have a respectable career, but was a questionable choice at #4. Jets did draft Kris Draper in the 4th round, but Smith gave him to Detroit for $1 in 1993
1990: Drafts Keith Tkachuk at #19, which was his best pick as the GM of the Jets. Manages to pick up Alexei Zhamnov in the 4th round.
1991: Drafts Aaron Ward at #5, while passing on Peter Forsberg, Alexei Kovalev, and Markus Naslund.
1992: Baffles the hockey world by selecting 25 year old Sergei Bautin at #17. The Jets could have chose Bautin in the 6th round if they had wanted to. Smith lucks out in the 9th round, by picking star goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.
1993: Drafts Mats Lindgren at #15. Lindgren never makes a impact for the Jets, and is traded to Edmonton before retiring after a few mediocre seasons in Edmonton and the Islanders.
the 1992 draft was pretty weak, though. Entire first round was pretty much garbage with the exceptions of Hamrlik, Yashin, Gonchar and Straka. Not much for later round picks either: Peca, Lehtinen, a few others.
Don't get me wrong, I am very anti-Smith and Bautin lol.

Yeah Barnes for Gihlen in my opinion was the worst trade in Jets history. At least the Selanne trade got the Coyotes Daniel Briere in the draft. Barnes was a #2 centre to replace Steen, and was good in both playoff series against the Canucks. That 89 draft was not a strong one, though Lidstrom, Fedorov and Bure went in later rounds. In fairness no one knew what Russians would do in 1989, after the Wall fell, and the USSR was imploding.
I guess that's all irrelevant if you draft Forsberg in 1991 and Koivu in 1993.
All that history makes you appreciate what Chevy has done to date.

ALL jet Gms from 1.0 had their hands tied financially. THE OWNERSHIP AGREEMENT with the province and city both owning 18 % for a total of 36 % public ownership stipulated they had to have a payroll in the bottom 3 Rd of the league.
Mike Smith allways had a smug attitude with his Russian Studies degree. Not a great fit with our city as Coach Murdock and him basically chased Ducky out of town in 1989.
PADDOCK was a good GM for this city and made some great trades for support players to bolster our line up when we had the young guns coming in.

I recall 1991-92, when I had a subscription to the Hockey News. THN had us and Detriot #1 and #2 respectively, in terms of prospects. The difference being Detroit kept all their prospects, and built a dynasty. Winnipeg traded away our prospects since wither we could not afford them, or bad moves by Mike Smith.

Winnipeg Enterprises was kind of a joke. But that's what happens when the public invests in a private enterprise.
I always wondered what led Hawerchuk to be traded. I was told he didn't like Winnipeg too much, and that epic 1990 collapse against Edmonton was probably the last straw.
I though Paddock was a good coach, but Don Maloney was probably our best in the 1st era. As a GM Paddock came into the era when salaries were paid in US dollars, which further hampered him, as the Canadian dollar was falling in value.

Hawerchuk loved Winnipeg. He said he thought he would retire a Winnipeg Jets, but went on to say that once the team fired GM John Ferguson and replaced him with Mike Smith, that all changed. Smith made it clear from day 1 that he was no fan of Ducky, going as far as saying that if he were the GM, he would have drafted Bobby Carpenter.
Hawerchuk later stated that when Smith took over as GM, he would berate and undermine Hawerchuk to the press, and was influential in cutting his ice time (along with Bob Murdoch). In his final year in Winnipeg, Smith relegated Hawerchuk from being the sole captain of the team for 5 years, to a co-captain with Steen and Carlyle.

I didn't realize how big of an ego Mike Smith had. I just knew he put together shotty teams. Ferguson's legacy was Hawerchuk and Selanne. Mike Smith and John Paddock took that apart.
