In the NHL, it's xRiccis/60. Not sure what the unit of measure is over there. Malkins maybe? Stats don't always tell the whole story, but he sure passes the eye test.

I think we need to grade the ugliness. We can name this the "Ricci factor". I might need some help replacing the comparable grades with modern NHLers.

0.0 = NHL average
0.5 = Zack Kassian, Ville Husso's five-head,
1.0 = Jonas Siegenthaler, Jonatan Berggren, Lucas Raymond
1.5 = Tomas Holmstrom, Brad Marchand, Patrick Kane
2.0 = Brent Sopel, Auston Matthews, Evgeni Svechnikov
2.5 = Oskar Sundqvist, Olli Jokinen, Rasmus Dahlin
3.0 = Cody Eakins (ginger), Alex Ovechkin
3.5 = American Hero Phil Kessel
4.0 = Evgeni Malkin, Brent Burns
4.5 = Gino Odjick,
5.0 = Ugly hall of fame (Ricci, Brindamour, Chelios)

As this is mostly subjective. (Some people are just universally ugly) we'll have to come up with a way to assign these grades. Then Next we'll have to come up with a system for calculating their Ricci/60 factor.

I'll have to workshop this a bit in RStudio or python soon.

How are Chelios and Ricci equally ugly? Based on the others listed, Chris is maybe a 2.0 or thereabouts.

Where is Tyler Bertuzzi on this scale?

Probably somewhere between a 1.5 and 2.0 on the Ricci scale.

Also how does this sound for a calculation method?

To determine what a player's Riccis per 60 is we do this...

(Applied Ricci score (x) * ((points/GP or points per game average) + (PIM/GP) + (total hits + total blocks/GP))) / ((total IT)/60))

So let's use Sunny as an example.

He's a solid 2.5 on the Ricci scale.

(2.5 * ((0.6ppg) + (9.333) + (1.733))) / (ATOI*60)/60)* (1/2.5)

We get a solid score of 3.589 Riccis per 60 for Sunny. As I'm just using this as a sample right now I haven't determined what would be the league average yet. (We gotta grade a lot of ugly people)

My hypothesis is that is a fairly high Riccis/60, so let's test it out.

In excel this is the formula
=(C3+((D3)+(E3)+(F3)))/(G3/H3)*C3

Next we take their Ricci/60 score and subtract their Ricci grade to get their true ugly score.

A +/- true ugly of .20 higher or lower than your Ricci score should show that a player is in the right bracket of ugly based on their play. When looking at this, Raymond is not playing ugly enough, or needs to get prettier (Maybe a better haircut or a cool hat?) Ovechkin, Kessel and Malkin are pretty close to their correct ugliness. Sunny is playing at an all star level of ugliness, though. 1.089 higher than his Ricci score!

Thoughts? Ways we can improve this?

Debatable. They're both pretty ugly. This might be a history of hockey forum question.

Dude I need help scoring Detroit so we can calculate the team's Riccis/60 rating. Hop to it.

And remember that it's ok to give guys a negative score. Like Henrik Lundqvist would be a -5.0 Riccis. He's just too handsome.
Does clothing effect scoring, or is it just a face thing? Hank in a $10,000 Italian suit is just unfair. He has a generational tailor.

I think it can play a part in it. But at the same time, put American hero Phil Kessel in the same suit and he’s still all star ugly.
