While I did like O'Flaherty, I think what hurt the physicality when Spellacy went down, was the loss of Sobolev a physical guy on the backend for 15-16 games,so Jodoin who would have been perfectWith how banged up the Spits are, it makes me wonder if there was a way we could’ve kept O’Flaherty while acquiring Dionicio.
Castles showing glimpses of hope with the depleted lineup, however it’s just embarrassing seeing our guys get tossed around. Spellacy took on the energetic checking role O’Flaherty had with more offensive production and since we lost him, I hate to say it… but the spits offense has gone soft.
At the deadline, it was like “wow, look at all this depth we have”, and last weekend it was “wow, we only have 8 forwards”.
I may get flack for being an OFlaherty cheerleader but he has 1 assist in 31 games and a -24 in Niagara. 11pts in 33 games here, but I love the contribution he brought when he wasn’t on the scoresheet. Niagara couldn’t have had that high of value on him, as we could really use a guy to two that’s just banging guys around.
It just makes the game tougher. Having a Spellacy/O Flaherty on a middle line with a pair of guys that light it up, is just so hard to play against, knowing when you’re not playing defense, you still have to be aware of where everyone is or you’re going to be lit up.
Somehow Morneau has been our most physical forward.
upfront was moved back to D,so basically O'Flaherty out of the mix, ditto Spellacy with injury, and then toss in Sobelev the physicality changed up and down the lineup both upfront and on the D.
I do think for the playoffs you will see Jodoin moved upfront, McManus will be seen more often and some of physicality will return.
Bottom line for me I wish all get healthy, knowing its unlikely Spellacy returns.
