The Orientation Camp was interesting. It allowed eyes on the draft selections. Overall IMO, the players selected will help the club. Nesbitt wanted the puck and made many solid plays...Pace was good witht he puck and has excellent speed... Manzo solid positioning....Lagana..strong and appears to have has a mind of his own,......Hjelholt was rock solid, excellent skater, positions well, young and should help the Spits right away. Others were ok...both goalies were not afraid (maybe one to Vipers.)....
There was no hitting so some players were handicapped in delivering their best
Short but sweet camp!

It’s always appreciated when people post after viewing practices or events that most of us aren’t able to view. Thanks

I was impressed by the whole event. The organization did a great job and the players were looking to impress despite the short time frame. Hopefully it results in a few signings this summer.
Don't all teams do this each year...

Well i hate to say it but windsor gave a huge one away! No one has played outstanding at all up to now. This adds more salt to the wounds! No i cant bring myself to congratulate that team either. To many years of bad blood…
I don’t think they have anything anyway. Their defense wouldn’t allow it.

London earned their spot in the finals, but man it stings knowing that Sarnia didn’t even put up much of a fight.

Just as easily could’ve been us provided we won more than 0 games in the playoffs 😅
There was something to be learned by the Knights from the Spitfires. They accentuated certain "factors" in their game, like shutting down their opponents. I know that's a difficult concept to embrace, but they've made it work for them, given their overall lack of "superstars". Another "factor" is that they somehow managed to accomplish what they have, without mortgaging any of their future.

Well they did mortgage a small part of their future in draft picks and players just not as heavy on the draft picks as Windsor. So no London did not do this for free. It always cost to stay if you want to win.

So who were the standouts?

From my observations in the brief scrimmage...

Nesbitt - quick for his size, likes using his frame to get to the net, good shot, willingness to get creative.

Lavigne - Decent speed for his spot/size, strong in battles for the puck, seemed comfortable. He might have a spot on the "OHL Hair All-Star" line, too!

Pace - Very quick, head up looking for plays, was looking to create offensively, didn't back down from physical challenges.

Tissier - I think they said he had four goals?

Morin - I kept noticing his speed.

Hjelholt (U18) - Looked like a veteran at times, good size, comfortable.

Ward (U18) - I think he won the shootout, creative around the net. Despite the lightheartedness of the scrimmage, I believe it was him who the coaches had to, um, remind about not being overly physical during scrimmage.

I can't give a good take on the goalies since I wasn't really sure who was who until late in the event.

I was at the on ice session as well, got to meet a few of the parents/ families, agree pretty much with your observations of the players you mentioned.
Adding a couple comments about those not mentioned ,was impressed with the play of dman Adrian Manzo, smart, positional, gap control style of defense, mobile,
Winger Kyle Butt nice style and pace, good hands, hockey sense, heavy shot and before camp we were warned about his physical tendencies and one could see he was tempted to hit but didnt will be interesting watching him future wise, forward Julian Gignac, decent skills, good shot, hustle, another one you could tell he wanted to hit lol,and dman Luke Leavens 15th round pick, had some decent moments, could be one of those diamond in the rough guys, did make the all star team so something is there played with Nesbitt this past season.
Didnt focus as much on the tenders though I thought they were fine,Donahue doesn't turn 16 till early December and Bortolin the other tender doesn't turn 17 till September so both have time to furthur develop, besides in my view with Costanzo and Froggett Spits are set in goal for the next 3 or 4 years and that's a good thing.
Must say despite the camp's briefness was impressed with the skills and skating overall, particularly Nesbitt, Pace, Lavigne, Manzo,Tissier, and Butt.
Looking forward to the main camp in early September it gives those who performed here Saturday a few months to get ready and compete for a spot on this year's upcoming team.
Would love to see 3 here next year, namely Nesbitt, Pace, and either Manzo or Lavigne, plus Evan Hjelholt the 1st rd pick dman in the U18 draft who I liked too, nice size and mobility and he doesn't turn 17 till December.
Hopefully guys like Gignac,Butt,Tissier play Jr B this year,as well as goalie Bertolin and forward Jakzen Ward a 17 year old from Windsor who impressed as well.

Article in the WStar tonight about Savard - just like last summer, he's fielding offers from the NHL. If he finds the right fit, he'd let the Spitfires know asap. If not, he returns and is content with that possibility. We all know this is a development league and he could be done. I'd love to see him return as he's one of the good ones but, if he's earned a shot in the pros, all the props to him.

I hope Savard finds somewhere to go. When he was first hired i remember people saying he will be here awhile and wanted to help develop kids to get to the next level. He has been here 2 years and after both seasons he been exploring his options. I’d just like to move on because i don’t want this to become a thing after each season he is here. But what also scares me is them going with someone who is already on the staff to be next coach.

Problem is, if he leaves theres a possibility 1 of our current assistants gets the job. Imho thats not a scenario i want to see!
Myself if Savard leaves,I doubt Delmore or Smith get named to the head coaching job,I wouldn't be surprised if former Spit Dale Mitchell currently with Leamington Flyers for the last 2 years,34 years old gets offered the job, just coached the Flyers to the JrB championship last night vs Stratford 4-0,Delmore and and Smith would be retained and away we go.
