To show how much change/ turnover this organization is undergoing,of the 52 players scheduled to be here,35 of them are new to the organization,12 Free agents,19 draft picks and 4 players acquired in trades.
Of the 17 other players here,2 of them dmen Nick Gauvin and Thomas Stevenson were injured last year and did not attend camp. This does not include Logan Brown,Gabe Vilardi,Sean Day and Mikhail Sergachev who won't be here at camp.
Too bad outside of goalie Michael Dipietro not much star power at this year's camp.

The last part is the biggest area that will need to be addressed in the future. Star players can bail a team out of a lot of situations and maybe DiPietro can do that here and there. Issue is that some players will get more playing time but won't be playing with elite level guys or others finding their footing. Purboo had chances earlier last year and even with injuries was elevated to top line status and he's not a top 6 forward, Playfair has to get ice time first before being a top 6, the kid from Hamilton might be a top 6 but he doesn't have the resume of a top 6. They will need to find a way to get some goals so they don't put more stress on a young D.

I see former Bulldog Joseph Mizzi is at your camp and he should have a good shot at making the team.

Yes,he is one of the free agents invited that intrigues me,I know he played 4 games last year in the Q,had 1G,1A
Despite being a 98 born,if he shows well think he can help.

My guess is that one of the older FAs stick, kind of like McEneny did last year. Especially those who have OHL experience. While they might not be elite talents on the ice, their off-ice contributions will be valuable.

Ray makers wants a trade

Wow Soo goaltender is at home in Chatham after requesting a trade from the Soo. Thought they were expecting a big season up there. Hope they don't come sniffing around here...

This would have been a nice fit for Culina - not sure if he can still be moved back home - we don't a goalie back though - just picks.

Unless there's a multi-team, multi-player deal. Windsor sends Culina to SSM, who sends Raaymakers to ???, who then send pick(s) to Windsor. Additional from all sides to even it up, but that might make some sense. (while fully realizing it'll never happen)

So the 2017 - 2018 season kicks off tomorrow - a last look back and 2 things from last season that stick out to me - We won the Memorial Cup! And the other one that puts a smile on my face every time I think about it was the road trip to Barrie, Sudbury and North Bay - 3 shut outs, 3 Teddy bear tosses that went south - way to go DiPietro ( The Grinch!). Don't think that record will ever be broken!
Lets hope there are a few smiles this year.

Given DiPietro has two seasons left in the O, I'd be starting with...

Gue 2nd 2020
SSM 2nd 2021
Wsr 2nd 2021
SSM 3rd 2018/2019

I'd also inquire about Barrett Hayton, Hayden Fowler (when possible), and Liam Hawel.

I don't think there's a great fit. SSM doesn't have the top picks to deal in the near future, other than what I listed above, and I doubt they give up any of the three players I listed.

That's a good bet since hawel plays for the storm and then going to make a run for this year Barrett isn't going anywhere, to be honest, i think he goes to Barrie ( ray) the reason Ray is leaving is because he won't get top stars why would they bring in Mikey when they have Matty.

Yeah, I realized after that Hawel was dealt. Oops. The point was it's not a good fit for a DiPietro trade. I'd imagine they'd trade him out of division, anyway.

A few (very) quick morning observations before I head to the rink for scrimmages:

- Kozhevnikov (sp?) - the Russian forward - very aggressive along the boards, definite hockey sense. Only saw him with practice but he seems to have a certain way about him. I did notice Letowski showing him a couple of things one-on-one.

- Starikov, the Russian D, uses his size very well. He's not overly physical but he's good positionally. Fluid skater. Kind of looks like Ivan Drago  A bit raw but you can see the potential.

- Larionov Jr might be a huge asset for us. Worked with Kozhevnikov in practice, showing him a few things. I'd imagine there's a bit of a language barrier and Larionov would help. Jr is also quick on the skates and seemed like he knew his way around the ice. Might be a nice FA addition.

- Trifone (D) was a giant out there. Like Starikov, not overly physical but played a simple game. Will be fun to see how he plays out.

- Staios is tiny but poised. Reminds me of Auger at that stage.

- More than one person has pointed out that offence is going to be interesting this season.

More coming after the scrimmages...

The struggle with Larionov Jr isn't his talent but staying healthy.

He had 5-6 different injuries last season and only played 25 games out of 72.

In his last 4 seasons, he has only played 48 games.

If he gets hurt as much as you have stated, then he wont be much help for this young team as he will be always hurt.
Cant score from the suites.

Brief report from this afternoon...

- Kozhnevnikov found his legs and was all over the ice. If he can find the net, we've got a gem. Great energy and looked very comfortable.

- Corcoran looks much older than an 00-born. He's going to be a big part of the D.

- If Luchuk returns as an OA, I expect him to get the C.

- Purboo might be the most awkward skater I've seen, and that hurts to say.

- There was something about Aloise that stood out. He wasn't the flashiest guy or the most offensive but he was always in the thick of things.

With the 1st day of camp over and 2 scrimmages in the books, the players that impressed me included, dmen Connor Corcoran,Will Brown,Louka Henault, Nathan Staios,Thomas Stevenson,Joey Trifone,Luke Markhuser,Nick Gauvin,Lev Starikov all played very well.
Starikov at this stage,6'7" has more mobility then Logan Stanley did at the same age, while Nick Gauvin is now 6'7"-222 lbs.
I felt that rookie dman Hunter Carrick struggled a bit today, but it's only day 1 so hopefully tomorrow brings better things for him.
I can single out Corcoran,Staios, Henault and Starikov as outstanding overall on this day,and the future looks bright in this area.

Upfront the following forwards,Kyle West, Davis-Teigen Katsumi,Kirill Kozhevnikov,Luke Kitkevicius,Mark Paterson, Vincent Desanctis,Matteo DeGuilo,Evan Benwell, William Sirman,Daniel D'amico,Jordan Frasca played very well for their respective squads.
Kozhevnikov in particular impressed with his size, speed and skill despite going pointless, while free agent Davis Teigen-katsumi was the most productive scoring 2G1A,plus a shootout goal in his lone outing.
Kitkevicius looks like a guy who will play in top 6 whether Brown or Vilardi are here or not.
For the most part I not included any assessments of the guys who played last year ,at least not today more about the new players trying to make this squad.

All 4 goalies who are in camp this
season played well today especially Patrick O Leary who allowed 2 goals in his appearance, while Brock Baier, despite allowing 4 goals while playing for Team White, and it was in their 2nd game of the day,the only to play 2 scrimmages, they were outclassed by Team Blue and Baier bore the brunt.
Lucas Patton and Mike Dipietro both were very solid for their respective teams on this day, though Patton was not severely tested during his performance against Team White's 2nd game of the day.

Whats up guys!! Hope you all had a good summer, glad to be back posting!! I did not get a chance to go see day #1 of training camp but great to see your guys updates. I was really hoping someone would post that Purboo look pretty good out there today....but I guess he is still in dire need of power skating and conditioning. Hope to get a chance to check out day #2

I was hoping Purboo would fix his skating. The kid can score; we've seen it. He's 6'3 215 and uses that frame well when he gets going. The issue is... he can't get going. His skating style is choppy and it almost looks like he's connected at the knees. (not sure how else to describe it). IF he can figure that out, he'll be a solid player.

I'll be there tomorrow afternoon; have a bunch to get done in the morning. I'd imagine there will be cuts between scrimmages.

Day 2 upcoming at Spitfire camp,a day where when it's over I will go over the 12 players that are here from this past draft, plus the 5 from the 2nd draft.
Without naming them I have so far been impressed with 9 of the 12,and 2 of the 5 from the 2nd draft. It will be interesting to see how they all play today.
Players that will be having my attention today include all 12 free agents,Will Brown,Liam Markhuser,Hayden Johnston and Joey Trifone had good day 1
efforts, while forwards Kyle West,Matteo Diguilo, and Davis Teigen-Katsumi looked very solid, one could say the same for Igor Larionov Jr.
Other free agents,Brock Grandbois,Josh Burraclough,Joseph Mizzi, and Louis Latta need in my view to step up more, especially the last 2, Burraclough is just 3 weeks from having a cast removed for a broken arm while playing lacrosse, while Grandbois is a December born 2000 winger who at times looked fine.
All in all so far,I do like the way the goalies are playing, the defense has been solid, the 2 new Euros show potential of being dominat players, many of the 16 years drafted,at least 7 of them have played well so far,a couple of vets need to have better days namely Purboo and Boka.
More reporting later.
