You need to bench players cheating on offence when we are ahead and the game is winding down.

That’s bad hockey.

Or with modern video review they should be shown their needlessly risky behaviour

I do not know the dynamics of Keefe and Nylander's relationship - and perhaps Nylander expects these things and likes the wake up calls.

As an outsider I can say that Nylander has been the most consistent forward for the team. I would say last game was basically his first poor showing. Was the benching a one off thing or is the leash shortened?

Because if the leash is shortened and the first turnover gets him moved down the lineup or a poor period etc, that would absolute nonsense. At some point his playoff performance bleeding into a stellar start should not be undone by a poor game. Other players have had numerous poor showings with no consequences.

willie is on a short leash - it is playing favorites which is wrong

From the Athletic
“I’ve talked to Will a number of times,” Keefe said this week, “and he’s made it very clear to me that he’s a guy that wants and needs to be pushed and challenged.”

That was in response to the benching

There is no need to freak out cause Keefe sat Willie for a shift or two. I remember after the CAR game (which IIRC came right after we got pounded by PIT), Keefe was widely ridiculed in these parts for saying how he saw good things in that game and so on. I admit I was on his case as well for saying something like we saw how a contender plays - aren't we supposed to be a contender? Why the hell do we need to see how Carolina plays to know what a contender looks like? Well since then, we've been the hottest team in the league so I think it's time we all just took a step back and not worry too much about how Keefe is handling his players cause he seems to know what he's doing.

Well said.

I have been critical at times of his decisions, like being too stubborn with the big 4, but he's mixing and matching very well. Looks like he has more buy in this season.

Willy has become my fav Leaf surpassing Matthews. WillyNy has evolved into a stud player both sides of the ice.

If Willy can score the cup winner he will become my all time fav Leaf surpassing Sundin ;)
Willy has really stepped up, and by all accounts....he wants to be challenged. He may actually be the most talented Leaf.

Even on a lower team back in the early 00’s we watched every game we played as a team and saw everyone’s good and bad. It was a good way to hold everyone accountable and also praise good play from everyone.

Great player, but I wish they tried a bit harder to convert him to a full time center in the NHL. He has all the tools to be a great one

I don't think he was ready 2 or even 1 year ago, this year though he's found another level. I've been hard on him in the past only because he squandered so much of his playing time and only turned it on when it was for his personal benefit, those days I'm happy to see are now gone.

If they're going to do it it should be this year, because he's ready IMCO.

Willie is always like this, he starts great bc his shots are getting in, then struggles a bit bc his shots are not getting in, then he will drives to the net more and clean up around the crease with goals.
I wish he just shoots and clean up the crease at the same time, lol.

Consistency will always be his struggle, it's why he'll always be the 4th member of the big 4.
He's played well this year though, best of his career

what is funny is willy is probably our best forward at being the second or 3rd man back to the defensive end. his back check is second to none at this point maybe kamph or kase. but he does the little things

You sure about that? Not sure about a backcheck stat but

Marner leads the team in takeaways this year.

In the 3 years prior,
Marner 142 in 134 games
Nylander 92 in 139 games

Saying he is second to none might be a bit of a stretch without some hard evidence.
