If he's Canadian, then why does he play for team sweden during the the world championships?

Let's say you're a canadian man,and you meet a canadian girl,in Canada, and you two get married and move in together. In Canada.
Then you get a job in Saudi Arabia, and you take your wife with you, and you go there and work for a few years, and during that time there, you have a son.
After a few years working there, you move back to Canada.Would you call your son an Arab?

Anyway, great game by styles, he should use his slapper more often like against tampa.

Arab isn't a nationality and Saudi Arabia doesn't do anchor citizenship, I'm sure whatever generation in your family came to Canada originally didn't call themselves Natives or Algonquin either. Very confused post overall tbh. For some reason all the good ol' Canadian farm boys that played for American international teams as dual citizens don't get this flack.

Loved how Willy went up to Ritchie after his PP goal on the bench to give him some love. I also saw Willy and him chuckling right before the puck dropped at the faceoff on that PP. I think Willy has a 1st hand account on how hard this market can be on underperforming players, and he has always taken the high road and just found a way to shut us up. Nice to see him try and keep things light for Ritchie in what I'd imagine is one of the toughest stretches of hockey for him.

Willy may not be your stereotypical Rah Rah leader, but from everything I've read about him is that he is completely committed to his craft, despite having a bit of an enigmatic/loose personality.

I've been critical of Willy in the past by mischaracterizing that personality as being not engaged. But he has made me look like an idiot over the last 2 years for sure. I've always thought Willy had just as much talent as Mitch and Auston TBH. I just never thought he was as committed to getting to that next level as they were. I think it is very clear that Willy has been our best player this year. Absolutely dominating at times. So hard on the puck, and his ability to create chances off of turnovers has been amazing this year. He's second on the team in takeaways, and 4th best on the team at giveaways. That is something I would have never expected to see 2 years ago.

He's supposed to be the selfish dramatic prima donna of the bunch too. Other than the contract negotiation, I can't think of a single remotely controversial thing he's done off the ice. Meanwhile good Toronto boys are getting their dads to trash their teammates and GM in the paper.

Marner taught me the importance of being able to shoot.

Willy has an elite level shot.

Nylander has very obviously worked on his game. As a result, he has improved to the point where he is well worth his contract. Still a flawed player, but his effort level and mental engagement have been pretty consistent over the past 100 games or so.

Marner could take some notes, mostly on trying to improve his game and improve to the point where he's worth his contract.

This primadonna thing was a fabrication from a draft site. I dont remember its name, red something?

You got distracted and focused on the wrong things, but that's on me. I'll try again, new version:

Let's say you're a canadian man,and you meet a canadian girl,in Canada, and you two get married and move in together. In Canada.
Then you get a job in Japan and you take your wife with you, and you go there and work for a few years, and during that time there, you have a son.
After a few years working there, you move back to Canada.Would you call your son japanese? No.

That's basically willie's fathers life, he left Sweden for a job in Canada, willy was born during that time, and then they moved back to sweden after he quit.

Thats why willy's a swede and that's why he plays for team Sweden.

Nylander deserves to wear an 'A' on his jersey for any game where an alternate jersey is worn, like what they did with Muzzin & Hyman this past season; include him officially in the leadership group.

He's really impressed me with not only his play, calmness & commitment, but also his interactions with teammates & his approach to the media. Especially for this team & what he brings in terms of leadership in a crazy high pressure hockey town like Toronto.

Same could be said for Spezza but for him it's more of a given because he's 'Vintage'.

couldn't agree more.

He is really stepping up to be a leader IMO

I know you think that but it isnt true just like Berkshire was wrong when he called Marner over-rated more than a year ago and said Timo Meier was more productive.

Marner is very overrated.

Backstrom who has 30 goal seasons, 100 pt seasons, a stanley cup, and is a HOFer cant get 10M ..... But Marner who has NON of these things got 11M ???

No playmaker has ever been paid like Marner. He is not the best. Over paid and overrated.

I think he identifies himself as Swedish.

What is it called when you are born in Canada?

In general a person is a Canadian citizen if: They were born in Canada. Note: A child born in Canada to an accredited foreign diplomat is not Canadian at birth unless the other parent is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at the time of the child's birth (3(2) of the Act).Jul. 15, 2020

What happens if you give birth in Canada?

The only exclusion is foreign diplomats who give birth to a child in Canada, cannot be Canadian citizens. Therefore, if you are a temporary resident in Canada (e.g. a visitor, worker, tourist) and you give birth to a child in Canada, your child automatically becomes a Canadian citizen.

I'd take a Swede that lives and works here over a "real" Canadian like Melnyk that stays in Canada the least amount of time he's legally obligated to for tax purposes.

I also recall he comforted an disturbed alternate captain in the penalty box last play off after Mitch was unlucky dumping the puck over the glass.

Yes, and that's why he was called ikea furniture by the media a while back when he was in a slump. But when he gets going and starts racking up points again, he's canadian i guess. Anyway, by the way he's been playing now, i assume he makes team Sweden's first line come 2022 Beijing olympics

Except he isn't playing bad anymore. Some miserable hater just wants him to.

Willy is our best player since the start of the Montreal series.

Didn't Willy actually grow up in Canada/US though? And in the context of hockey, wasn't he primarily a product of the US' minor hockey/development system? I'd say his ties to Sweden are a little tenuous and he plays for them simply because he can with his citizenship.

Not dissimilar to Steve Nash. Born in South Africa but grew up in Canada and was developed mostly in Canada then the US. All three countries can make a claim to his success and I assume if he wanted to, he could have played for South Africa (assuming they have a national basketball team) but does anyone call him South African? I think all three of Canada, Sweden and the US can make similar claims to Nylander and if anything, the US has the strongest case to say he's their hockey product (just missing citizenship).

I also think @Martin Skoula seems a little sensitive on the subject of any criticisms of William. That hometown "Toronto boy" he keeps alluding to has gotten a hell of a lot more grief on these boards so that destroys that narrative. William Nylander is a professional hockey player in the biggest market in the world. He's gotten his fair share of grief from fans and media. No more, no less: his fair share. And it has precious little to do with him being Swedish or whatever.

by the time we see that he will be in another uniform

Is it bad to say he is now playing more like a Canadian?
