This to me is one of the most intriguing stories of the offseason. I still feel like he re-signs, but the fact that it's gone on this long is puzzling.
A few weeks ago I thought for sure he'd end up in Nashville. But now with McDonagh traded I'm not so sure. He's a guy Nashville needs, but I thought McD is who would pull him there.
A year or so ago I thought Florida is where he'd end up. But now I think they'd much rather re-aign their own guys instead.
The homecoming angle of Toronto would be fun. But the problem is I think the Leafs deservedly carry a reputation around the league as being, to put it nicely, a very unserious team. I can't see a 2x champion like Stamkos wanting to put up with that bullshit.
Buffalo and Detroit are both in similar spots and close to home. As much fun as it'd be to see Kane and Stamkos together on one team, I just don't think he goes that far north.
Montreal has the MSL connection, but i think theyre simply too far away from contending to be a legit option.
if Stamkos wants to retire into the sunset and get paid, Anaheim makes sense. He could join his old buddy Killorn.
Dallas is an intriguing spot. Southern market, they've already lost Pavelski and possibly Duchene, they should be spending money on defence but I could see him joining fellow prominent Canadians Benn and Seguin.
LA is another option if he wants to head west. With Dubois traded there is an opening up front, and he'd be a nice add to help ease Byfield into center like what Dallas does with Benn/Johnston (because you'd be stupid to take Kopitar or Danailt off full time C duties).
Carolina is one of the more likely destinations. They've got the cap space, are a similar market to Tampa, and if they move Necas for a D man he'd be a nice fit.
The wild card in all this is Vegas. Trading a few players away to sign Stamkos makes a helluva lot more sense than the rumored Marner interest
