This to me is one of the most intriguing stories of the offseason. I still feel like he re-signs, but the fact that it's gone on this long is puzzling.

A few weeks ago I thought for sure he'd end up in Nashville. But now with McDonagh traded I'm not so sure. He's a guy Nashville needs, but I thought McD is who would pull him there.

A year or so ago I thought Florida is where he'd end up. But now I think they'd much rather re-aign their own guys instead.

The homecoming angle of Toronto would be fun. But the problem is I think the Leafs deservedly carry a reputation around the league as being, to put it nicely, a very unserious team. I can't see a 2x champion like Stamkos wanting to put up with that bullshit.

Buffalo and Detroit are both in similar spots and close to home. As much fun as it'd be to see Kane and Stamkos together on one team, I just don't think he goes that far north.

Montreal has the MSL connection, but i think theyre simply too far away from contending to be a legit option.

if Stamkos wants to retire into the sunset and get paid, Anaheim makes sense. He could join his old buddy Killorn.

Dallas is an intriguing spot. Southern market, they've already lost Pavelski and possibly Duchene, they should be spending money on defence but I could see him joining fellow prominent Canadians Benn and Seguin.

LA is another option if he wants to head west. With Dubois traded there is an opening up front, and he'd be a nice add to help ease Byfield into center like what Dallas does with Benn/Johnston (because you'd be stupid to take Kopitar or Danailt off full time C duties).

Carolina is one of the more likely destinations. They've got the cap space, are a similar market to Tampa, and if they move Necas for a D man he'd be a nice fit.

The wild card in all this is Vegas. Trading a few players away to sign Stamkos makes a helluva lot more sense than the rumored Marner interest

Voted yes. He's done everything you could ask for from a 1st overall pick and he seems to love it there. I think they find a way to get it done.

Tampa offers 6.5 x 2 and Utah offers 10 x 4.
Stamkos will have some crazy dollars offered.

Hes not that good anymore. Tampa is better off not paying for the big name and let another team deal with overpaying a declined Stamkos.

If by a declined Stamkos, you mean he only scores 40 now instead of 60...then yeah, he is a declined Stamkos.

It is not like he can help a struggling power play turn things around in a hurry. Nonsense!

i feel he will, he's set for life, he's got his cups, he's been there his whole career, i can't imagine it's too bad living in Tampa :). Don't see him leaving, might get a little less than he could on the open market? But if you've made almost 100 million in career earnings, not including endorsements and other ventures, what would an extra 5 or 10 million really mean to him? His home is there, he won there (twice), and I'm sure he has a lot of close friends on the team. Tampa shouldn't low ball him, because if you truly disrespect him with the offer, that would be the only thing that I could see motivating him to actually leave. The guy is a future HOFer an still a really good and productive player. He's a great fit there, he belongs there.

It does not make sense that he is still un-signed, but lots of things don't make sense in hockey, sports or even life in general.

If Mark Messier can leave NYR for Vancouver in 1997, just a year after courting Wayne Gretzky to join him on the Rangers, then why can't Stamkos leave TB?

the most successful franchises have to be a little ruthless, a little cut throat. Able to make those business decisions that are best for the on ice plan. Hard to argue with Tampa's success.
Absolutely, it’s just flown under the radar how ruthless they’ve been with him, no one really talks about it. Between the trade talk after the 2020 cup win, wanting to see how this season played out before extending him, and now trading for a near $7 million player(who’s older than him), they haven’t exactly made keeping him priority 1. Not to say any of that’s bad, you gotta do what’s best for the team, but I’m just not exactly surprised that him leaving is more of a reality than anyone seemed to think.

40 goals, 81 points in 79 games.

Not that good anymore.

Right.
Of those 40 goals and 41 assists for 81 points, 19 goals and 20 assists came on the Power Play.

At even strength, he had 21 goals and 21 assists while play at the worst plus/minus of his career at -21.

If the Lightning throw most of their Cap Space at keeping an aging Power Play Specialist, they are going to have a very difficult time filling out the rest of the roster with players who can complement their six high priced "core" players. They have done these the last two seasons with first round post season defeats.

Time to move on, whether Lightning fans like it or not. If they don't, they fall into the same issues the Penguins are having by keeping aging fan favorites with fat contracts while trying to fill the rest of the roster with bottom tier NHL players and those who should be in the AHL.

I'm going to say no. He'll get his last big bag somewhere else on a 3-4 year term. Then sign a cheap 1-2 year deal in Tampa after that for a retirement tour.

I think he will re-sign, but if he doesn't - Dallas seems like a good fit after losing Pavelski and Duchene. that would be where I'd look to if I were him, and I have no connection to Dallas at all.

Dig a bit deeper than just looking up stats. outside of being on a powerplay with Kuch and Point. he wasn't very good, especially defensively. And his 5v5 offense doesn't make up for it.

Ahh yes - the ye olde 'aside from the good, he wasn't good' argument. lol

Make's it to free agency, Tampa steps up their offer to him, he resigns. Can't see the apatite for Stamkos to leave Tampa after 3 cups and at age 34.
