or if Caps let him play after he would normally have hung them up if not for the record seeking.

If Ovi is washed in another year and a half and he is holding on just to break Gretzky’s record, I’m not for it. Gretzky scored 62 points in 70 games in his last year. He could have certainly held on for another 30+ goals

He’s the points leader on a team that’s sitting 6th in the league in P% at 38 years old. This entire thread seems to be people working themselves up about a hypothetical that isn’t currently happening.

Gretzky scored 9 goals in his final season, he literally couldn’t score anymore.

Ovechkin is coming off a 42 goal season. He’ll be fine.

Ovi has to adjust with new coach. He will be score more when he is used to new coach.
 
A little bit snakebitten. He still gets shots going around 4 per game so it will start going in eventually. Also the PP have been very bad so far so if the PP starts going more as normal t should also help.

It is still early in the season but age eventually catches up to everyone. Washington is no offensive juggernaut either. Not the best place to be playing right now if you want to score goals.
 
One of the issues moving forward is his ice time and PP time will likely start to decrease, which in turn will limit his chances too. I still think he has a hot streak and gets to 25-30, but after another long season + possible playoffs + offseason, how drastic will the drop off be then? He looks like a totally different player; old, slow, can't gather the puck quickly, floats, etc.

I doubt his PP will decrease.....probably should, but if you are a team trying to get him to the record, it won't. PP he doesn't have to skate around that much, so won't be hard to play those minutes.

I was hoping Ovie would break the record just to say we saw it happen in our lifetime. Never really understood why so many people actively root against him to hit such a huge milestone. It’s not like it’s Gretzky’s only big record, he’d still have like 60 more to his name. So what if someone comes along and takes a Gretzky record now and then.

If he can’t find a way to take a big chunk out of the total this year (35-40 goals) then I have my doubts it’ll happen.
