Will Ovechkin hit 20 goals this season?

Man, I wish I could find the post from a few years back that really exaggerates (for effect) that whenever people post these comparisons, they always show a head on shot from the old days and a heavily angled shot from today.
While what you say is true there is denying the ridiculous ballooning of goalie equipment between the 2 eras.

blue jackets defense like some of the posters here, dont think he can do it so they dont guard him lol

Looking at the play the defense wouldn't even know which Capital player was in the slot.

they had possession in a 4-1 situation and my personal Selke candidate Dylan Strome steals the puck and dishes it out front...man just horrific defense there.

Most assuredly! Look at how much net is showing with Hall of Famer Gerry Cheevers:

Over half of the net is showing!

Compare that to a borderline NHL goaltender of today, Matt Tomkins:

There's literally nowhere to score!

Either you have to argue that every goaltender of today belongs in the Hall of Fame, or the gear is THAT MUCH BIGGER NOW.

I don't like ovi and want him to fail.
I don't like the handful of posters that have like a combined 50000 posts which exaggerate beyond belief.

As for him getting the record I don't care either way and care a little bit in the way it's happening but I guess that makes me a hater which is the most childish reaction I see on HF Boards and that's saying something.

I disagree with probably 98% of what MJ writes in his dichotomy world but I'm not even close to "hating him" and frankly it's somewhat insulting the way it's used around here.

Okay those camera angles don't :help: my case but you sound like the goalie union here the equipment is vastly different and larger now.

How do I sound like the goalie union? I'm agreeing with you, my man. Look at the evidence!

My bad I'm really stoned right now....and for some reason when someone uses the words

Most assuredly

My brain goes into "this will be !00% sarcasm following" when I hear them.

Doesn't everyone feel that ways instantly upon hearing them.

I most assuredly think so.

I got pretty good reason for not liking him. Non of it is childish or insulting.

The more he gets washed the assists will go before the goals for Ovie, as he becomes just a guy who finishes PP goals. Since his assists are fine this year, I think this was just a bad luck stretch for Ovie and he roars back with 30 goals.

I won’t be doubting Ovechkin getting 25-30 goals until he finally fails to reach it. He is obviously not dominant this year, but that shot is still lethal.

He has been too good for too long for me to believe it’s possible for him to fall short that far.

You’ll never guess what happens next!

No idea what number 11 and one of the guys behind the net was thinking lol

Who cares about the puck being deep behind the net, the greatest goal scorers is open in front of the net, might want to cover him

Bad awareness by 11/CBJ and good awareness by OV to see a sleeping CBJ team

The blocker is bigger than what currently allowed, I can tell I have equipment that belong to both era myself, the modern blocker is thicker and have side protection but the face area is smaller.

The gloves of the past 1980 didn't had much restrictions, there where also marginally bigger or about the same sizes as today, the ones from around 1990 to 2005 where gigantic, fully extended there around 2-2.5 of additional reach compared to the ones currently used ones.

The pad where huge but so damn heavy (this set is 16.5 lbs each) as they absorbed water from the ice, don't quote me on that but I was told they could weight up to 5 more lbs at the end of the game. that more than what modern pad weight at all. (around 4.5 lbs)

The stick paddle and lower shaft where a fraction thicker.

The goalie pants, the chest protector and the mask is where the modern equipment is bigger.

When you compare goalie of the same sizes, 5'11 Esposito Cheevers Saros, then you realize that the difference is not that absurd. The technique and positioning is what make the modern goaltender look like giant.

Surely you’re not trying to say goalies today = goalies in the past right ?

Oh no, absolutely not!
All is relative, the gear had and will keep evolving.
Butterfly, vh, reverse vh, t push etc all that jazz wasn't very possible/efficient when you where wearing 60 lbs of gear. I just don't think that past around 1955-1960, the sizes of the gear is the thing that had the most impact regarding the dynamic between the shooter and the goalie.

Thread is aging like Milk. OV has his team sitting with the 4th best P% in the conference. So much for the team "not caring about winning"

So pacing for 27, means 46 more goals for the record after this year, or two more years of 23g a year. Or 3 more years of 15ish goals a year (taking him to 41 years old). Without any significant injury.

It's gonna be interesting certainly. Largely gonna be a question of injuries.

I think #11 was thinking "Geez.....we have 3 guys below the line defending 1 player.....I want to go too...but maybe I shouldn't.....I'll just stay over here and do nothing and hope the puck pops out in my direction"

Pace is hard to go by. At one point he was on pace for 15 and now has 3 in his last 3.

It was always going to come down to health for him, even when people were first talking about the record 5-6 years ago.

He's still getting the shots off (almost 4 per game average) and more of these will soon start going in for him:

and as Has been said by nNy a goalie on panels around the league (back in the day with smaller goalie equipment) ....."only 3 or 4 guys per team could snipe 90 miles an hour.....now only 3 or 4 guys can't"

Can only imagine how many Bossy and Lafleur would have scored with today's $500 sticks.
as opposed of the $25 Louisville sluggers, Kohos, and Sherwoods. ha!
