I find the "doesn't contribute to wins" line of attack hilarious in the wake of Marner willing us to a dying minutes comeback over Boston with 2 clutch plays, and scoring the game winner in the shootout against Vegas.

I would not bother as it is one of many profiles this poster has and he will attempt to get you to get personal and he will report you.

To add to your post Marner has contributed to wins...shoot out winner and assist on winning goals.

Nicely put. Everyone should just use the ignore function and leave it at that. If you want to engage him on the main board, by all means, but not here.

Neat random Marner stat. Last year he only took 37 face-offs and won a meagre 38% of them

Only a quarter of the way through this season and he's already at 38 face-offs going 55% in the process

Get Marner going, and this Leafs team, could be unstoppable.

He has not figured it out yet. Getting closer I think.

Another good play on the power play.

He is simply amazing. Been a huge factor at even strength. Interesting he looks better without Bozak.

Notice how Matthews is always in the play with Marner?

Bozak is too slow... always behind the play so Marner had nobody to create offence with.

I agree. Matthews and Marner are a great complement.
Bozak is useless right now. Not really a surprise Marner looks better with a good centre. Bozak is the problem. Remember though minus guy said Bozak carries Marner:laugh:

Yeah, I just wish you guys would stop quoting him so I don't have to see his posts haha.

Bozak should be 3rd line shutdown in my opinion.

JVR - Matthews - Marner
Marleau - Kadri- Nylander
Komarov/Sosh- Bozak - Brown/Hyman
Martin - Moore - Brown/Hyman

I think Marner will be a Top 10 player from his draft class of 2015.

So Leafs do have a good one in that regard.

Could this be a better question?

Of course Marner has proven to not have been a bad selection, he's been fantastic. However...rumors were strong that Hunter and Babcock were at a disagreement on the Marner selection, apparently Babcock really wanted a big defensemen (rumoured to be Hanifin).

Hunter perhaps played it safe and went with the known commodity in Marner, someone he knew would at least be a impact player in the NHL. Or maybe some will argue, he made the choice with the idea that Marner will be the best player/period at #5. Lets not forget that their were rumours that a few teams were interested in trading up to acquire Hanifin, obviously one being Columbus. I don't recall hearing about teams wanting to trade up for Marner. Heck, Columbus almost traded 3 2nd rnd picks, just to move up and draft Hanifin at 4.

In knowing the value of a top pairing defenseman in the NHL, and the cost to acquire one... ex. #1 overall pick Hall, for Larsson (can we use Chia trades to set standards?), and the #1 Centre with size in Ryan Johansen for the unproven young defenseman Seth Jones (who obviously was highly touted)...

Was going with a small winger the right choice?

Yes it was. Considering Marner has outplayed Hanifin up to this point. Dont forget there was a lot of interest from the Leafs on Werenski and and Provorov. If Marner was off the board, Leafs would have traded down for either Werenski or Provorov. Jackets got a top pairing d man and we got a first line left winger. I dont see the issue. Also consider Rielly has become a #1 d man if he keeps his play up.
Leafs made the right choice and didnt make a mistake at all. They have no reason to regret it.
Hall is a much much better player than Larsson. Larsson is not a top pairing d man as much as Oilers will tell you. Johansen has also been better than Jones so those 2 trades indicate that the forwards are the better players than the d man they were traded for. Based on that, Leafs made the right choice to take Marner especially considering he has been better than the d man that was in that range, and the player some people wanted in Hanifin.

These two players, Marner and Nylander, have more talent than Kadri.

But will they become a better player than Kadri?

Right now are they a better player than Kadri, the answer is no.

They should be in the future if we went by last season. The regression this season is too much. Must wait and see.

Kadri only has two moves. He has a lot of moves, but last few seasons, he makes two moves basically.

If he is coming down the wing along the boards, he will do either one of two things. He will try to jump by the defenseman and go straight for the net. Otherwise he moves himself and the puck almost at a right angle towards the middle of the ice, in order to get the puck to the net. Kadri is always trying to beat his man.

Beat your man and go to the net, that creates space. Marner and Nylander, not there yet with the moves. Too often, 5 on 5, they are boxed out they way they play.

That they have to learn.

This is a prologue to what I really want to say in the next post.

Once upon a time, there was an evil fracker and his name was Pegula. He spent lotts of money so that people would like him, and his fracking. When that didn't work, he tried to lose so that he could get a really good player that people would love and give him credit for, so that people would like him and his fracking.

Sadly, the worse his team got, the more evil he became, messing with football, real-estate, and politics too.

Thankfully there was a good team who made lots of money through communication, and drafted two outstanding players, named Mitch Marner and Auston Mathews, to battle Pegula's team, along with a cadre of valiant rogue fans from Buffalo, NY. I am such a fan, and Marner, at the very least, is my co-star.

Down with Eichel and the evil empire!

Marner may be the best power play player for the Leafs, in recent years.

I think Marner on the power play is that good.

This is what Marner is good at, he is good at getting pucks through to the open man. A side step here, a wiggle there, any opening, the puck makes it through to the open man.

Watch what happens the next time Marner has the puck near the boards in the high slot.

He scans everybody. Where he is, if the come at him, there is room to back off and puck goes across the blueline to Reilly who now has an open shot or a cross ice lane to pass it. A lot of players try to stand there, but they must have to the skills to make that pass, which Marner does.

Therefore, Marner stands there and no one comes at him. From there, he scans everybody to find who is open.

There is JVR on the near post. There is Bozak usually somewhere off the far post. Kadri usually in the middle doing the spade work, and Rielly on the point.

From where Marner is, and his skill level, the puck will always make it through to 1. JVR at the near post. 2. he shoots it on net for a rebound for Kadri or JVR or Bozak. 3. The tip play in the slot for Kadri.

You may say that ... everyone runs the same thing. Yes, that is true.

The point is, I never seen anyone run it better the last few games than Marner. He's figured something out.

The puck always makes it through for a very good chance. That is how the Leafs scored on their PP last night.

They should experiment, try the big three on the power play for the whole two minutes. Put Nylander where Bozak is, and Matthews where JVR is, since they probably won't be back.

If it were that easy everyone would make that play........but marner seems to be able to do it every time......that's talent....

Why does it look like Marner "only" find another gear when he plays with Matthews with 5 minutes left in the game?

  • Hyman is full throttle every shift all game long, that's what Babs likes!

JVR and Bozak can't play at the speed Marner and Matthews can, it's what makes them exceptional.

Marner has a high hockey IQ - like a poor man's version of Wayne Gretzky. Not the skill level of Gretzky - the IQ and most of all heart
I agree, marners best attribute is his hockey smarts. Watch his highlights from last season and you will notice he had a tendency to be at the right place at the right time.
