Michael Russo: Wild signing a number of players today

The Wild care if it's one way vs two way. If Folin faltered and didnt play well...they don't want to pay him an NHL salary in the AHL.

Leipold starting to tighten his checkbook? That's never been an issue in the past. Folin was never going to be in the AHL. Let's be honest.

You don't know that he wasn't going to be there. And it's asset management. When everyone we've signed today has been 2 way deals...it's clear the Wild want options.

I don't think he would have cleared waivers, unless he completely forgot how to play. He's an experienced RHD and many teams would have taken the chance on him to fill that spot on their team.

I do know that based on his play the past few seasons and the fact we have absolutely no 3rd pairing RD. It was time for him to be a permanent fixture and the team cheaped out. It wasn't going to affect the cap whatsoever.

Look at the quality of players signed to 2-way deals. Folin is better than every single one of them. Does Fletcher just plan to sign everyone to a 2-way deal? Great way to build a team!

Leipold got his $17M check and now he's holding onto it tightly.

I almost think GMCF is counting on the preseason waiver wire to fill in the holes of the team.

I thought the overriding reason we did not give Folin a QO is that we were afraid of what he would get in arbitration (and arbitration was a given in his case). We tried to negotiate a contract before the QO deadline and for whatever reason it did not get done. I have a hard time believing that we were insisting on a 2 way contract; that's the same as telling him to go pound sand given how long he had been with us. Perhaps Folin wasn't all that excited about returning and wanted a fresh start somewhere else. He and his agent surely knew that the Kings had interest in him.

Russo:

Matt Cullen and the Wild indeed continue to talk this morning, so there's a chance he forgoes retirement or a chance of three-peating to return to Minnesota for a 20th NHL season.

I do hear the Wild has gotten back in on Chris Kunitz, so don't know if that'd change things with Cullen if the Wild went that route. Originally, Cullen and Kunitz were intrigued by coming here together, but then the Wild acquired left wing Marcus Foligno and it sounded like things cooled off with Kunitz. But now I hear it may have rekindled.

Very true. He definitely wouldn't make it through waivers, which is why we should've just signed him to a 1 way. $850k is a bargain for Folin.

Ditto.

I also wonder if Boudreau's input isn't a factor here. If he didn't particularly trust Folin and wanted some more physicality on the bottom pairing it'd make sense that the Wild were ready to move on.

Now, I have no idea who they'd be after or how they plan to fill that third-pairing RD spot, but I'm pretty sure it's not Reilly or Murphy.
