You may look at Wallstedt's current 26 saves on 29 shots and think that's a mediocre performance. He's had possibly 5 or 6 spectacular saves that should have been goals. Currently "losing" the battle versus Askarov, 3-1.

Give Mermis back to Iowa and it's probably pretty close.
O'Rourke-Spacek has been a really solid pairing. Lambos made me cringe twice tonight with his positioning.

I have a problem with the coaching decisions. If the AHL is a "developmental league", why is it that not a single one of Lambos/Spacek/Hunt/O'Rourke is on the top power play unit? You could argue that THREE of them should be on the top unit with how awful the forwards are. Not only that, the current top unit looked awful tonight.

Focusing on 5v5 play is development too, and PK. That is the role they will be expected to play to start with if they play in the NHL, putting a greater emphasis on that earlier on in their careers is good, especially since both are already offensively inclined. Developing balanced instincts at 5v5 within the system can be just as beneficial to getting them to NHL level play as feeding them offensive time IMO.

They can do all of these though. They can give them top PP minutes, top 5v5 minutes, and top PK minutes.

Lambos makes me cringe a lot when I see him. I'm sure he has fine games too, just not the ones I see.

It doesn't bother me that the young d-men aren't on PP1. I just don't see any of them as a as future PPQB (Mennel and Addison I could see that potential), and don't see a shot good enough from any of them to replace a FWD. I'd rather have them getting the PK and 5v5 ice time because those are the roles they'll have if/when they make it to the NHL.

I'd like to see Spacek in the Dumba clapper spot or Lambos on the opposite side. I think one of those guys should be at least figuring it out at the AHL level because they will be PP2 for Minnesota when they are up. And again, you can still give those guys a large amount of 5v5 and PK time.

I'd rather see a FWD in the Ovi 1-timer spots. Why will they be on PP2 in the NHL? I mean MN has a 5 FWD PP they've ran this year.

I'd rather have them sort themselves out and see who separates themselves from the pile and then try that one as the PPQB. Keep them all on even ground so there isn't an argument that they are playing favorites due to draft position (Lambos), AHL games played (ROR), NHL games played (Hunt), etc. The cream will eventually rise to the top and rotating them in and out of the PP doesn't do anyone any good.

Why? It makes no sense to put a forward there just because they are a forward, especially when all the forwards on Iowa suck. They will be PP 2 because Minnesota somehow has guys like Foligno, Gaudreau, Maroon, and Lettieri averaging over 1 minute of PP time per game. Of course, guys like Yurov/Khusnutdinov/Ohgren could take those spots as well.

I feel like that's just a poor developmental path. Don't play anyone in the spot because you don't want anyone to feel like they are playing favorites? lol... They are burning development minutes for those guys in favor of 30 year old Welinski, 28 year old Lucchini, 30 year old Fogarty, and 28 year old Petan (and Walker, but I don't mind him getting minutes).

Iowa's power play is also 25th in the AHL at a 14% conversion percentage. So, not only are they burning those development minutes, they also suck at the power play with their old player unit!

In my viewings none of the d-men look better than the FWDs. Their shots aren't as good as even the old guys you mentioned. Why spend development minutes on guys that aren't going to have a future on the PP, it's not like any of them have put up big points in the past? Let them sit and rest on the PP and play 5v5 and PK minutes. It also does them no good to play on a worthless PP, there isn't much to learn except to how play fetch when the zone is cleared.

And really to be fair with the FWDs in Iowa they have a grand total of 3 (Beckman, Novak, and Walker) under the age of 26 that have a chance at sniffing the NHL.

it was the same the past two years. made absolutely no sense to me.

Well, they are out now, but Milne, and hopefully Bankier, are young and seem to have a decent shot at the NHL some day. Milne ended up last year on a vg note. Improved leaps and bounds from the beginning of the year. Bankier...too soon to say, but has nice size and overall skillset.

I can't wait for Milne to get back. Bankier I'm unsure of, he's just a prospect I didn't pay much attention to.

I'm excited for both of them. Bankier's game really blossomed last year - still probably a bottom 6 guy but has some size and underrated hands. Milne is someone I think a lot of people underrate just because his ceiling isn't as high as some others.

3 point game for Yurov today. Now up to 10 points in last 6 GP.

(But only 4 faceoffs)

The guy can't be stopped right now. On pace for 48 points in 63 games. For reference, Kaprizov had 27 points in 53 games in his D+1 year. This is tracking to be the best U19 season ever in the KHL, and even one of the best U20 seasons.

Definitely appreciate context posts like this.

Since he is 2003 born technically it is a U21 season for him though.

Still some quality goal and assists for him today.

My Rossi ranking at #2 ain’t too bad!
Yeah, that was really clean too! All three of Yurov/Rossi/Faber have looked really good. The only one I'm scratching my head at for my top 5 is Khusnutdinov. He has 5 points in 10 games for HC Sochi so far in November. Maybe starting to heat up?

It's gonna be a wicked slow burn when he shows up to the NHL and I was right about the prospect rankings from last summer
I looked back at it and I went 1 Wallstedt, 2 Faber, 3 Rossi, 4 Yurov. I feel pretty good about that order still, though Yurov has impressed even more than I thought he would, which was already amply. I think those are all of our top tier of prospect, and then there's a drop-off after it.
