There was nothing wrong with Khusnutdinov’s play in the first game when he got plastered to the bench late, I assumed it was just early vet preference as they were pumping the puck to some pretty mediocre players. Haven’t watched since but I am sure change would be welcome. He needs time and deserves it, what foolishness to squander ability.

How does Marat planning on joining the NHL next season factor into his playing time with SKA?

I have no direct knowledge of his situation to make a definitive statement or accusation. I am principally opposed to actively delaying or hindering another persons talent development though. Whether or not good faith efforts are being made in that regard and as it applies to this situation, is up to your interpretation.

Sochi should be good for him, I see no reason why he can’t have a great season from here on out.

If he goes to Sochi (or anywhere else) and doesn't get playing time there either, we can all continue to be confused.

If he goes to Sochi (or anywhere else) and gets playing time but plays poorly the rest of the season, we can all rest assured that it wasn't SKA playing games, he's just a bust.

If he goes to Sochi (or anywhere else) and gets playing time and has a good rest of the season, we can all pretend it was that he probably just needed a change of scenery.

Traded to Sochi...

Marat going to Sochi is a pretty clear sign to me that he will not re-up in the KHL. That is good news for us, as is the fact that he will be going somewhere that he will play. Looking forward to seeing him with the Wild next year, though with all the re-signings, it's hard to see how he gets a spot on the NHL team right away.

It's more like Rotenberg revamped SKA's line-up and will play 'his guys' no matter what; even if they fall off a cliff.
Principle over practicality -- its not unseen with coaches, but magnified tenfold on SKA with an overcompensating and arrogant nepotist coach

Youngsters like Khusnutdinov were on the outside, looking in, from the beggining.
But at least SKA understands young guys need to develop. They sent-away Michkov and Buchelnikov for the sole purpose of giving them ice time, Looks like the same will occur with Khusnutdinov

Was Rotenberg not involved at all last year? How many new guys got added to push Marat so far down?

The entire top 6 is new, basically.

Dont forget, due to team injuries, Khusnutdinov won the lottery last year by being able to center Gusev and Jaskin. He was originally slated for the 3/4th line role.

But things don’t need to make sense with Rotenberg. The confusion is not limited to younger players either. A solid grizzled vet like Galimov’s playing time is also down in favor of some questionable players.

But at least SKA recognizes its quality younger players need to play. So there’s that at least.

Is SKA playing better because of these changes, or is that yet TBD?

Well just looking at the standings they are 8-7-0. On pace for 32 regulation losses. They had 15 in all of last season. Sure seems like something.

On paper they should be better. They're much deeper. But on the ice they've been a tire-fire of inconsistancy and incongruence.
But as Rotenberg says, "trust the process!"

Novak assigned to ECHL. Bummer - was hoping the best for him due to what he went through.

He should get more ice time in the ECHL than he will in AHL. Playing time to work on conditioning and find his game again is what I'd look for with him.

It's fine. If there's any prospect that needs to be treated with kids glove, its the young offensive forward that just came off from cancer recovery. And the Iowa team seems pretty stacked at forward so more offensive time is good for him.

I don't disagree with any of this - I just have have a hard time seeing him playing in Iowa next year with the influx of forwards unless he proves himself in the top 6 this year.

There are 4 UFA and a couple more RFA FWDs the Wild might not bring back next year. At least one or two FWDs should make a push for the NHL team too. It's also not like Iowa is a stacked team of high end skill FWDs now.

Novak needs to simply needs to get his body back in game shape and find his game. If he's good enough after that making the team will take care of itself.

I look at the ECHL assignment is more of a rehab thing than a not good enough thing. His minutes can be managed on a game by game basis more easily in the ACHL too; that team has 0 expectations of being good.

I haven't seen too many guys start in the ECHL end up being NHLers. Yea, I understand he's coming off cancer treatments, but still...

Next year will have Bankier/Milne/Haight/Yurov/Ohgren/Lettieri for sure, and even if Walker and Beckman are not re-signed or traded, they will bring in another AHL vet or two like a Petan or Fogarty. Is it possible Novak can be in the top six for Iowa next year? Sure. Is it likely? Not in my opinion.

They could be bringing him along slowly. Get him some games, let him build up his strength and his speed again and let him progress at his own pace without interfering with other prospect developments.

Khusnutdinov getting actual ice time for Sochi, only able to catch the 3rd period, but he has been getting ice time throughout, including 4v4 time with 3 minutes left in a tied game, and now he is out there again with :40 left and Sochi on the PP.

He failed to convert in the SO on a gloveside shot and Sochi lost the skills comp with 0 saves. He looked good from what little I saw, not a lot of action with the puck, but looks fast as usual, had a successful dump and chase forecheck, and generally solid defensively including erasing his man from the net front on a physical play.

The usage is the most important thing, and it was a good game for that, when he gets more acclimated and has Michkov back, I expect him to get some more time in the offensive zone.

To the ECHL?
Oh, I didn't realize that he was in the AHL already. Thought he was in some sort of injury limbo. I wouldn't be surprised if he started out down in the ECHL, but I haven't started to dig into Iowa yet. Not sure if i will spend much time watching this year, even though i am very curious to see how our D develops, whether Sammy Walker takes another step, and how Milne/Bankier develop.
