I don't know tbh. The KHL season being over for him might change the math some for Firstov. Yes, he might still be in the AHL, but it does give him a chance to showcase before next season. Also it shows the good will towards the team.

He did have a year in the USHL and then 3 years in college, so it's not like he isn't acclimated to NA. So I don;t see the ties to Russia as being that big of a concern.

I also think he was sent to the KHL to relieve some pressure from the FWD group in Iowa (something like 9 waivers exempt FWDs for MN currently). Beckman, Chaffee, Swaney, Walker, Shaw, Hentges, Giroux, etc were all on the roster at the start of the season. Cramarossa was released because he couldn't get on the ice for this reason. A better development for everyone is to send someone to the KHL rather than the ECHL to get ice time. I don't see it as much different than Ohgren staying in Sweden rather then being in the AHL this year.

The fear of NHL or bust is bigger for Yurov or Marat K than it is for Firstov for me.
Do we sign Nesterenko? Jaxon Nelson from UM is worth looking. at, 6-4, 220 farm strong with some developing offense. Thoughts?

Thoughts on adding to the prospect pool. Nesterenko and/or Warren. I’d like to see them take a flyer on UM’s Jaxson Nelson. 6-4 220, farm strong and improving offensively.

That is a NHL level shift right there from Rossi, haven't watched much IA this year, that looks like significant progress to me when it comes to energy level and decisiveness. Even if he didn't win that race off of the chip play, it would have still been a great clear and pressure, he read the pickoff play perfectly to force the turnover, good sign he is developing his abilities to beat professionals at the mind games.

Rossi has improved. He, and not Walker, might be the best player on the Wild now. It’s not any one thing, but a whole lot of little things have improved just a little bit.

Good to see that Beckman is putting up points, and Hunt is back playing.

Burn it down to 1 year or down to 2 years?

NCAA championship is 4/8, if they get there. Wild have 3 games that following week to close the season. I doubt he'd be ready by the first one, so 2 games and then into the playoffs?

He's under 22 so it's a 3 year ELC. If they burn this year it would be 2 full seasons of an ELC. If they burn this year he'd just be even with the rest of his draft class that didn't go the college route. It wouldn't be a slide year for Faber, so even playing an AHL game burns a year of an ELC.

The only way to not burn a year would be to:
- sign him to an ATO the rest of the season for the AHL and then an ELC for next year.
-not sign him until next season and he finishes out the year as a college student.

Nice, so goes through the buyouts no matter what. Great.

It depends on how close the the NHL they think he actually is. If he's ready now or only needs a year of AHL time then burning an ELC year shouldn't matter. If they think he needs 2+ years in the AHL then there isn't much reason to burn a year, unless they think they'll lose him as a college FA.

Didn't they say, or at least heavily imply, that they think he could have played this year? Or Russo reported that he thinks they think he could have played this year? Something like that.

I think he could've done what Merrill has done this year pretty easily. I think that would've been his floor.

Maybe. You certainly hope he's better than Merrill as soon a next year so it's not out of line. He has NHL size, only quetion is does he have NHL strength and decision making. Playing defense in the NHL is a hell of a lot harder than playing defense in the NCAA and even the best have a transition period getting used to it. A guy like Dahlin came directly from an adult league and he still had trouble defensively for a couple years. But then, Brodin had a very smooth and very quick transition to the NHL, so who knows.

I take all of that with a grain of salt. Part of it (imo) is the team fluffing the player to get him to sign. They didn't do any of that with McBain and lost him last year.

The NHL from college is a big jump. Maybe Faber is ready, maybe he isn't? He'd be fighting Addison for the 6D spot, barring injuries to Dumba/Spurgeon.

Unless Dumba, Addison, Goligoski, or Merrill, or some combination thereof, is being traded at the TDL, I don’t get the point of signing Faber early.

Ideally (for the team) it would be an ATO for a few AHL games after the college season is over. Then the ELC for next season.

The downside is that it leaves the door open for him to go back to college next year and this whole dance happens again next spring. Then there is the added pressure/chance Faber could/does decides not to sign and become a college FA in summer.
