Why is it inconceivable for Matthews to be McDavid's equal?

in this thread I have learned that Matthews had a worse playoff, is not as good a goal scorer and is worse defensively than McDavid, lol.

Imagine thinking a sheltered rookie who had an incredibly high percentage of offensive zone starts and was kept away from the best competition isn't as good defensively as McDavid.

Next season stay up late and watch at least a handful of Oilers games live. You'll see it with your own unbiased eyes that McDavid is a better defensive player than Matthews.

I don't think it's inconceivable that he might be McDavid's equal but I haven't seen anything to really suggest that he will be.

McDavid may be the new golden boy, but let's face it - Matthews isn't a scrub and neither is Eichel. Any team would be lucky to have any one of them.

It's weird that we have 21 pages when the answer is basically "almost anything is possible but it's still highly unlikely."

It's only being kept alive because a vocal minority can't be content with their consolation prize and are determined to compare him to a player who is out of his league in almost every aspect. What can you do, it is a discussion forum.

Really? you don't think Edmonton fans are contributing to the thread? I seem to be responding to one now (and you did too). In fact, you have two posts on this page alone (soon to be 3 I bet)

it's not inconceivable that anyone could become comparable to McDavid, hell I could have been the next Gretzky had i been better at hockey. Matthews and McDavid comparisons work the same way. If Matthews was just a little better at hockey he could be on that level, and maybe he gets there, but right now people trying to push this narrative just seem foolish. Like they might actually only watch one team or one players highlights, and decide that's enough to bring to the conversation.

For a guy who throws a fit when people lump the Leafs fan base all in one group, you seem to do that an awful lot with the Oilers.

Oh relax, I was teasing and it was the simplest way to convey the theme. I give your players and organization plenty of support so do not paint me as an Oiler hater.

And I have done it exactly once, with that post. I always qualify some Oiler fans. So you have really misrepresented the situation, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story eh?

Well that's usually how discussions work. Somebody says something, somebody else responds. ;)

There's tons of baiting and silly discussion going on. But when you see posts laughing at the notion that McDavid is better than Matthews defensively when every measurable statistic proves this (so far) beyond any reasonable doubt, it does make you want to shake your head.

You realize saying things like this only makes you sound insecure, right?

Sorry I just don't see it. Oiler fans can sit here and laugh at Leaf fans for being delusional, yet Oiler fans can't accept that while McDavid is better, Matthews has parts of his game that are better than McDavid.

It was mentioned he had a better playoffs, but Matthews was a beast. Seriously, take off any bias glasses you have, and watch how Matthews plays defense and my favorite thing, watch how he uses his size and strength to protect the puck and win board battles. This is something McDavid cannot match with Matthews. This is not an insult, it's the truth.

Also fun drinking game, take a shot everytime he puts the puck on Hyman's stick (11) and he skates into the corner with it only to lose it or is set up in front of the net and does nothing with it but put a weak shot in the goalies chest.

They have an answer for that. His playoff goals were "lucky" (in fact most of his goals are lucky and now that the league knows you can score in high % scoring areas he will only get 20 next year). They have an answer for Hyman too. Who you play with in no way affects your points or alternatively Hyman and Brown/Nylander are better than anyone McDavid has ever played with.

I think the thread title should be changed to "Why is it inconceivable for Draisaitl to be Matthews equal?" :sarcasm:

I feel that'd be a better thread than McDavid vs Matthews (which isn't even close)

I wanna see how Conor improves during the playoffs before I put him on Crosby's level.

I really don't care how many assists he gets in the regular season. And yes Marner is the same boat.

Wait, which boat are you talking about?

This boat?

or This boat?

Because the 1st one (McDavid) and the 2nd one (Marner) is completely different :sarcasm:

This is a much closer and reasonable comparison. Matthews could conceivably catch up to Drai by next year.

Yeah Dra's career progression has been so similar.... Does he even outscore Matthews rookie season without playing with McDavid? Probably not.

Concede that McDavid is the better player but Matthews is probably the better goal scorer and also better defensively.

Better defensively? He isn't even better than Draisaitl on the HERO chart  McDavid's is about the same too. Don't give me he's 'better defensively' bullcrap. You can say he's good defensively, but not better
