Strange thread. If you have to ask why he's in the lineup you aren't paying very close attention to the team.

Leafs nation always needs to blame all the teams problems on one guy. For me it's marner in playoffs. So far. But Every year Im hopeful that they will rise above the problems past and propel us into the 2nd round.

Speculating, TSN has him #10 on the Tradebait board, showcasing him? If the Leaf's scratch him it reduces his value. An active 2nd pair 3/4 d-man is worth more than a press box, lower than 6th on the depth chart d-man

Seems he's down lower on the list now

Ask yourselves would you rather have Holl as the 7th D in the playoffs or Timmons/Gus?

It is Holl for me.

If you are 7th you are playing protected offensive minutes, Timmons has produced in that role like no other Leaf has. I'm pretty high on Timmons as a 6.

Because he is a capable defenseman, who has played big minutes for top5 NHL teams (us) for the last few years. He cannot carry a pairing and he has shortcomings (namely puck watching and no real offensive talent). But he is extremely good at using his stick and body to separate attackers from the puck on the rush, shut down cycles, and hold the blueline in the offensive zone. When the other team establishes possession in our zone, he's not someone we want on the ice, but he's one of the best on the team at making sure the other team doesn't get the puck into our zone.

The coach trusts him, and he's +14 this year which is third among our defensemen. Having a bunch of people on HF cry about how he's bad is pretty comical, because the actual results he gets more than justify his place in an NHL lineup, even that of a contender. He plays 20 minutes a night against tough competition and doesn't fish the puck out of his net all that often. When he fishes it out, it often looks bad, but just like goals, they don't ask how, they ask how many. Fans on the forum care about how, but that's why we're fans and not the coach or GM of a successful NHL franchise.

Sorry lads, he's a good hockey player.

The biggest problem I have with Holl and it's his biggest problem is he's too slow moving the puck. Always takes that extra second to get rid of the puck when forechecked more often than not resulting in a giveaway. He's not the quickest skater or great outlet passer. If he would cut down on the giveaways in his own end there wouldn't be much complaints about him. If it's one or two a game that one slow decision making giveaway could end up in our net and cost us the game. Something I would hate to see in a game 7.

Probably because he's not as bad as the people whose heads he lives rent free in think.
The problem with statistical averages is that they often don't show the frequency distribution of all events good and bad. Sure he provides some solid performance but if you rank order all events good to bad, his distribution would show a long tail and that tail would represent catastrophic mistakes. Last couple of games he played ok but Justin Holl in the worse possible time will eventually turn into Justin Loll and it will not be a small thing. That is on Keefe for overdeploying him during critical times

The problem here is that with so many looking to justify themselves, they end up blaming him no matter the situation.

He's out there in tough minutes so goals are going to go in. The problem I see is that if the goalie gives up a softie? Holls fault. The forward didn't get back to help? Holl's fault. Etc. Etc.

Some are obviously his fault but the level of trying to blame him for everything has reached comical levels.

I mean, absolutely pastes McDavid and answers the bell? He's a bad player as he lost the fight. That's actually how half the board sees that play and only proves the point.

Holl didnt lose the game against edmonton but as a player, he drives me nuts. If he had the discipline to stick with what he was good at and not get distracted by a squirrel, he would be solid. Pushing up offensively is not what he should be doing. Plays well when challenged for a job....not reliable when he is not. Not the player I trust in the pos

Wow as Danny Galivan used to say "twisting and turning, turning and twisting the old Savardian spin-o-rama"

thats a pretty smooth justification of a rationalization:laugh::laugh::laugh:

All kidding aside he's not the reason the Leafs win a lot more than they lose, but with him in the line-up they win more than they lose.
