Not that I agree with Lou not wanting to give out bonuses, but you're saying he should get full bonuses cause it's "part of the culture" of first overall picks, but what about the culture of the Leafs? He's entitled to do things the way he wants in order to continue building the culture that they all want. Leafs culture is more important than first overall culture.

They're not going to let Auston Matthews go cause he's pissed off. People need to chill out.

I'm not saying Leafs culture isn't important I just don't see why, in this case, the full bonus wouldn't be warranted. Thats all. *

* - If this actually has anything to do with the lack of a signing so far, which I'm certain it doesn't.

The only thing is, he'd still have to sign an ELC. Let's say he signs the 925k ELC, and then 6 million per for 3 years. He walks away with just under 21 million. On the flip side, lets say he plays overseas for 4 years, and makes even 3 million per, and then signs his ELC for max bonuses with the team of his choosing. He walks away with ~19 million. So he makes less money, and is farther from reaching UFA status

Someone would draft him again in 2 years, so it'd probably be a 4 year wait

Why do people keep bringing up this 2 years thing? We have his rights for 4 years as a player drafted out of Europe

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/CBA2012/NHL_NHLPA_2013_CBA.pdf

(d) Players Drafted from a Club Outside North America.

(i) Notwithstanding any provision of Sections 8.6(a) or (b) to the contrary, if
a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is drafted from a club outside North
America, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation
for his services through and including the fourth June 1 following his
selection in the Entry Draft. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to
such Player to retain such rights.

Although, Lou refused to give Marner Schedule B bonuses (potentially $2M).

In fact, Lou has never given a single player “Schedule B†bonuses.

Schedule Bonuses were introduced after the lockout.

Since then the only players drafted Top 5 that did NOT receive the full bonus schedule are Larsson + Marner.

(both contracts negotiated by Lou)

Except that's incredibly incorrect. Just last year Hanifin got the exact same as Marner. All the A bonuses, none of the B.

And pretty much all the other contracts apply as well. The full bonus is 2.85, the only players to get the max are all the 1st overalls and Eichel.

Most of the rest got in the 2-2.5 range, but not the full bonus.

I hope Lou is playing hardball with him and not giving into bonuses. That was one of my favorite things about Lou in New Jersey.

He doesn't want to play on that garbage team, and he's gonna pull a Lindros. Just returning the favour.

Unfortunately we all have to deal with the repercussions brought by our fan bases least common denominator. How many reasonable Buffalo fans have heard "yeah well you also tried saying Eichel was more pro ready then McDavid" or Arizona fans hearing "your teams going to Quebec city", when the majority have been reasonable? The crazies come out to rile up other fan bases and the rest are left to absorb the consequences.

It's freaking sports fandom.

Why the hell are people feeling moral superiority over other for who they cheer, it's a distraction for the majority of us anwyays

Mathews goes to Europe for 3 or 4, comes back and signs biggest contract with Vegas..... of course all this after they dump E Kane that would already be in Vegas from a previous waiver that wasn't even Buffalo.

Lindros did not get out of his seat and never put on the Nords jersey at the draft.

matthews would have to have a turn of enormous proportions to come close to pulling a lindros.

He would've done so already.

Does that reset the year counter? Wouldn't think so or teams could just keep trading his rights so he could never play in the NHL then.

So 3/4 years in Europe and off to Vegas for $$.

no.

He's not pulling a lindros.

Again, if he wanted to not play for the leafs, he wouldn't put on the jersey at the draft, and then tell people he isn't signing.

Because the mayor and tire ceo were present in negotiations.

In a real hockey Meca-market, a team would have some past greats from the Leafs or at least from Ontario. Nope Leafs bring out nobodies like a Mayor guy(could be a Gal as well, doesn't matter) and Random suit with a comb over. Come play hockey here and we'll be your friends *pant* *pant*.

Yikes! I'm outta here says Mathews.

He probably wouldn't have done Leafs developmental camps and attended all the seminars and did all the interviews after each practice/scrimmage too.

At first I thought it just the same joke being recycled over and over because people lacked originality... but I'm starting to wonder if some posters are actually being serious.. kinda scary.
