NHL teams don't trade draft picks like the NFL, so the trade down or up is sort of something that doesn't happen in terms of the lottery often. You get an established player or you use the pick by in large.

The Islanders are the first team in a while I could think of entertaining this, even there I still believe they pull the trigger and take #1. It is just really rare since the cap era came in for those deals to take place.

FWIW Craig Button has Eklund falling to us.

If Eklund falls to us, I'm going to finish what Joe Thornton wanted to start after Hertl scored 4 goals that one time...

I voted Reschny. He really popped off down the stretch and I think he has more skill than most of the options here. If he were 6'2, I think he goes ~5th overall.

Next I think probably Bear if we're okay with his injury. Then probably Carbonneau I guess? And if none of them, I can begrudgingly live with Aitchesson.

Really I'd rather trade the pick. I'll really only be happy on draft day if Eklund falls. I don't like any of these guys as much as MBN and I don't really like MBN very much.

How many small wingers does this team need seriously?
We have Debrincat, Kane, Raymond, Plante, Buchelnikov, Mazar and now you want to add another? Hard pass!

If Jackson Smith falls to us I would rather take him. We are swimming in potential/current small scoring wingers we don't need another one.

I am with you. People equate undersized with being "skilled" way too much in my judgment. There are about five posters around here that want nothing to do with anyone over 5'11". Reschny isn't even that skilled. I will give you that he is smart, but he doesn't have high-end skill and isn't a great skater. If he did, we wouldn't be talking about him at 13OA.

Hard pass for me.

Who knows what the team will look like when this pick makes it but the odds are pretty good that only a couple of those guys are still around when this pick makes it. In the exceedingly unlikely event that all of our sub 6'2 wingers are good enough to earn NHL jobs, we can trade the surplus.

And frankly Reschny has a bigger physical presence on the ice than 6'5 Rasmussen. There's plenty of 5'10 NHL players and if he grows another couple inches, which is fairly common, he's no longer even small. He's hard to play against and plays a very complete game which is really what this team needs. Our problem isn't that we're small, we're actually a little above average. We're a big team that gets pushed around anyway. And that's because our real problem is that we're a bunch of spineless cowards. Reschny would be a good piece for fixing that.

Think we should REALLY hire somebody from Washington Capitals scouting staff...

- Ilya Protas, 2024 3rd round pick, scored 124 OHL points, 2nd most at OHL
- Ryan Leonard, 2023 1st round pick, everyone knows him. Went just before Danielson.
- Andrew Cristall, 2023 2nd round pick, scored 132 points, WHL leading scorer.

They will have both Protas brothers.... Alexei as a 2019 3rd rounder.

We desperately need help at LD and need a big winger or 2. We don't need more sub 6 feet wingers. We have a boat load of them. A lot of who will probably make the NHL too. I forgot to add Lombardi and Kiiskinen to that too

It's time to draft on need, the wholes we have aren't getting filled though free agency and trade. A lot of the LD we have drafted don't look like top 4 guys or even NHL players for that matter.

I really haven't seen enough of Reschny to say one way or another. But the way people talk about him in his draft class kind of reminds me of Nick Suzuki. I did find him impressive at the Hlinka. +IQ can take you a long way sometimes.

I get the idea. I just don't like any of the players that fit those profiles that may still be available at 13.

For big wingers it feels like Lankovic is your only hope and he's more of a Franzen/Mantha big guy with skill type. Maybe the extra couple inches that Bear and Carbonneau have on Reschny really matter to you but I like Reschny more.

Then for LD you're hoping that Aitchesson or Smith drop. I'd be fine with either. Neither really excites me and I'd bet against either being available though. Every year analysts mock 1 or 2 defenseman taken in the top ten and 4 or 5 end up going. And I still think we're getting our fourth best defensemen with either of them. Whereas I can see Reschny being our second or third best forward.

It's a bit of an exaggeration because I like to rag on Moose for being a gentle giant. I do think that Reschny has that combination of tenacity, motor and positioning element to make him play a lot bigger than he is. It's also sort of meant to be demonstrative of the fact that just because you draft a 6'5 player, doesn't mean you're getting a physical force.

So the comparison I see is a little bit like a combination of Braden Point and Lucas Raymond's worst qualities. Gamer mentality in a smaller, smart, skilled package like both of them. Not as fast as Point, or as creative and skilled as Raymond.

Don't get crazy about size. Size does matter, but it's not most important component. Teams looking for size because they don't know how those kids will progress. Wings didn't take Hughes in 2017 because he was undersized, despite he was playing pretty good for national team. Our 2 best last year forwards were undersized .

We need defense badly
We do, but that isn't coming from the draft. I love Aitcheson, but he won't be an impactful NHL player for another four years. I like him because he is a physical, hardnosed player with solid mobility and a bit of offense in his game. I am not, however, looking to fill a particular current hole by drafting him.

What happened to all of our d prospect core?

Tuomisto
Johanssen
Viro
Wallinder
Cleveland
Etc

All these guys suck? If we NEED to draft a defenseman that means none of these guys are anything?
Yes they suck lol

Johansson maybe 3rd pair ... same for wallinder buium??? The rest and etc... will join alex cotton in europe

Yeah, this is a fair point, but if we believe he can be a top 4 physical defensive defenseman then there's no problem adding that to our pipeline. For instance, let's say we sign Gavrikov for 6 years, in that case you can let Aitcheson develop and potentially fill a spot in the top 4 as Gavrikov ages out of those tougher minutes.

Greatest young talent pool in the minors until they might actually get called to the real squad to play meaningful NHL games.
