Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

I also think last season was mostly an outlier. The Rangers will have depth down the middle which is a nice advantage. Panarin, Lafreniere and Cuylle are locks top-6 wingers. Their bottom lines are solid too. Defense is missing at least one quality LD and a structure. There will be something for Sally to work with.

If Panarin isn't moved. Personally I think I'd take Artemi into next season and see how he and the team rebounds and then decide either a new shorter term contract or move him then. The alternative to that is what you might acquire for him over the summer that could fit into the a top 6 wing position or might be something like trying to get Marner, Boeser or Ehlers in free agency. There's really not a lot that interesting as top 6 wingers after them. I liked Sam Bennett but I see him more as a middle 6 guy and these last few playoffs of his he's been walking---sometimes crossing over the edge into dirty. Really when I look at the things that Rempe has been suspended or taken to task for---apart from the elbow to Siegenthaler it's mostly from being too big and not really deliberately trying to injure stuff---and it's hard not to look at that elbow to Stolarz or the sucker punch to Marchand as anything but deliberate.

I'd take Marner for Panarin's spot

As for order I think the team wants to trade guys:

Kreider
Panarin
Z

Schneider is next cause we have RHD but only 1 real LHD. But he would likely not be traded unless a good deal comes along.

Miller and Laf are just not likely. They at least want a new staff to have a chance with them and they are young.

Also, I think the gap between the top 3 and the next 3 is very large.

I would too. The thing is do you move Panarin before getting Marner? because there's no guaranteeing that we're going to get Marner just because now we have cap space for him. There will be other teams that will pursue him and he could easily get a Panarin + contract. Panarin if I remember was offered more by Florida but decided to go with the Rangers. Maybe Marner goes with highest bidder or maybe he's just got certain teams in mind. Toronto like New York, Montreal, Boston are big stages---he might look at it that way or maybe he'd like something more laid back or even a certain region of the hockey world like the West Coast.

frustrating if it goes down that this group who seemed like they could have been beloved Rangers lore ends up being the ones everyone hates because of last season. Whatever else was going on it feels (to me)that this group put themselves above the Rangers team as a concept and were more interested in being buds and playing together than being rangers and winning

it’s the most pure form of an upgrade.
A faster, more dynamic and better defensive form of the same player.

It’s also repeating the same mistake
Anyone who acts like panarin was a mistake is not to be taken serious. Again, hes the best free agent signing in new york sports in the past 100 years. People dont even argue that statement

Hmm

Trying to decide if Antrel Rolle deserved more credit but then I remembered he had just the one super bowl.

Panarin can be the best free agent the rangers have signed, and a mistake.

Dollars to production he was immensely successful.

In terms of short circuiting a rebuild, in terms of type of player. Panarin was a mistake.

Yup, agree again. Sequentially, I’d start with moving Kreider, then luring Marner and then decide what to do with Panarin. Zibanejad is a wild card in this equation.

They could still be beloved if they play hard and win a Cup. Easy peasy.

I dont have Post+ anymore but I'll take Phil's word for it. It's time.

Yeah, not surprised. The last game was a Laviolette gift to CK/MZ as if saying goodbye.

In terms of keeping your job and making your owner happy, Panarin was a mistake that couldn't be avoided.

Are you advocating for rebuild since you called bringing Marner repeating Panarin mistake?

Nah it’s been the MO of the people who were involved.

Gorton did it in Boston (Chara, Savard) and JD supported it in Columbus (Gaudreau RIP.)

Dolan had no idea who Panarin was before he signed here. This isn’t a guy who follows the sport religiously.
