First time in a long time I see the leafs as a tough team.

Knies. Warrior
Tanev. Warrior
OEL. warrior
Lorentz. Warrior
McCabe. Warrior
Domi. Warrior
Laughton. Warrior
Benoit. Warrior

we always had the skill, but playoffs was always about holding your own. Being tough.

We got this.

A far cry from the shrinking violet types in Engvall, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Kase, Holl, Liljegren, Brodie, and Barrie.

Who is this guy?

Depends how Tre spends the $20m we think it will take to sign Marner and Tavares. He did pretty good this past summer adding some Tanev, OEL, Stolarz, Lorentz and Patches. I think adding two or three playoff performers with that $20m could make us better. Confident Tre can make the right decisions in anticipation of July 1.
We’ll see, I love JT, but only back st yhe tight price and term. I don’t think I’d resign Marner, his ask will be rediculous……..

People would rather see a cup in FLORIDA than you're own province? Gtfo

After this series, probably not. Because now it's a rivalry.

But if it's a Canadian team - which are all rivals in some way with Toronto, but especially a geographical/historical rival like Ottawa or Montreal - up against a Carolina or Dallas or Minnesota, etc. teams that I have no problem (i.e. a rivalry or history) with, then I take that team every day.

I don't see it as country vs. country: Dallas is not "America" and Edmonton doesn't represent Canada, they represent Edmonton. Lastly, I'm petty in that if any Canadian team is going to have bragging rights for being the first True North team to win the Cup since the early the Habs in '93, then it's Toronto or bust.

I get that many Canadians don't feel that way, but you can be sure that if Toronto got to the Final vs. Vegas or another U.S. team there would be plenty of Canucks, Oilers, Habs fans cheering against them. As it should be.

I can't believe how much other Canadians hate us. This year, I honestly don't give a shit about petty hockey rivalry. Any Canadian team winning is great for our country and I want to see it. People would rather see a cup in FLORIDA than you're own province? Gtfo
We only have The Havoc so I go for any southern team over anyone other than the Leafs. Keep Stanley home.

The Tide keeps us rich with local champions, but they’re at the beginning of a run of mediocrity.

Well outside of hfboards most leaf fans will cheer for the last standing Canadian team usually. Canadians who cheer for other Canadian teams don't seem to return the "favour." I think it comes down to a little brother complex. That's all it is.

What I really don't understand is people who grow up in the GTA and cheer for the Bruins. What is wrong with you? I automatically just think you must be a douchecanoe as the only explanation. I met a few people once to buy something. One was a Leafs fan and the other a Bruins fan. We started talking about why someone would cheer for Boston and I didn't want to say it but guy was like well they just must resonate with douchebags. Guess I'm not the only one who thinks that 😆

That’s fine, going to agree to disagree on Brodie. RHD options were there and Dubas repeatedly chose not to address it.

Ridiculous that Rielly has been on this team for this long and finally has a true RHD partner in Carlo.

Thanks for the reminder on Weegar being in Florida. I remember it being reported that there was a deal for Weegar for Dermott and Johnnson and Dubas didn’t pull the trigger. I thought it was with Calgary but I’m not going to go back looking for it.

Cheers
That's fine if you want to make the case that Dubas should have signed an actual RHD instead of a leftie who plays on the right.

But it's not really a matter of opinion (i.e something that can be disagreed with) that Brodie's defensive performance in that situation was statistically dominant, or that the Leafs as a team had their best three-year defensive results of the last 46 years with him playing the defensive minutes.

Would I rather a cup go to a US team over Montreal or Ottawa?

YUP. f*** the Habs and Sens

Really pleased for Woll last night.

Appreciate how hard he battled early when he didn't look comfortable.

Thought it was important that he didn't just hold on for dear life the way he did in game 1, but actually found a bit of confidence and comfort as the game, and in particular the 3rd period, wore on. That toe save on Mackie will have done him a world of good.
Not only did Florida throw their best punch last night and we still won but now Woll has a game 1/2 under his belt in this series. The more he plays the more comfortable he’s going to get. We all got to give him some slack, he hasn’t had any game action in almost a month. For a position that feeds off consistency sitting on the bench for a month kills any type of momentum you had

Well people in Alberta don't seem to consider themselves Canadian anymore... so this doesn't surprise me. They'd rather be the 51st state.

What a ridiculously over the top statement to make.

Just wow. Definitely agreeing to disagree and not even going to bother with this anymore.

Bobs been dogshit. Leafs need to play better. This series is going to get tougher.

How can moneypuck's algorithm say we only had a 2.1 expected goals..

our goals came off of:

- a shot along the ice that got tipped bar down, that should be like an auto goal no goalie is saving that
- a 2 on 1 rush
- a 3 on 2 rush that became a 2 on 1

Matthews had a couple of wristers on the pp, Mcmann had a partial break from the high slot in, nylander also had a good shot from near the hasmarks.

The only goal that was a no excuse bad goal was the marner goal which was just a wrister from the boards that beat him cleanly, but i don't think you can have a negative expected goals.

I just find the stats really confusing. We got outplayed sure. We didn't have many shots, but we had a couple of quality chances

RHD options were there and Dubas repeatedly chose not to address it.
I mean, did anyone before him address? I know one of this board's favourite things to do say Dubas sucked, but what did Lou try to do to fix the problem? Nikita Zaitsev, Roman Polak, and Frankie Corrado. Come on man. Brodie, though he shoots left, was better than anything Lou picked up to play the right side. Plus Dubas picked up Muzzin and McCabe. He did more to address the D than the guy before him by a long shot.
Not only did Florida throw their best punch last night ...
I doubt that was their best punch. I hope it was, but I don't think it was.
What a ridiculously over the top statement to make.
I mean, he has the stats to back it up. It's not at all a ridiculous statement to make, you just don't like hearing it.

Dude, it's true. It's not a very high bar to clear, in case you're wondering. This season is literally just the 5th time in 46 years the Leafs have had a team defensive ranking containing a single digit.

The Leafs' best 2 defensive seasons of the past 46 years are 92-93 and 93-94. Those are sandwiched by the bad 91-92 and the below average 94-95.

When the Leafs finished 7th in the NHL in GAA twice in three years in a 30-31 team NHL, that three-year span was the high water mark for them with the possible exception of 92-94 or 93-95, however you want to look at it.

What are you even disagreeing with here? Those are the numbers. I didn't make them up.

Just the ones with untreated syphilis. Seriously, there are still quite a few Leaf fans out west but they generally keep pretty quiet.

I guess goaltending, systems & coaching, and depth was the issue for us, not the ‘core 4’ and cap allocation.

You win and lose as a team… and this is a team. Go get it boys!

I’m the opposite. I felt no allegiance to the Canucks based strictly on geographical location.I watched all the teams and ended up choosing the team I most enjoyed watching. That happened to be the Leafs.

great effort. FLA is not going to go down easy. Really nice to get a head start on this series.

Even though it is almost unfathomable to think, you gotta go to FLA with a clear objective to get the sweep. Settle for the split. Do not go into FLA thinking a split is OK. That type of mindset will bring the series home tied.

All gas, no brakes. Foot on their throats. Make them pay.

It's really that simple.

This series is far from over. These guys are the reigning champs for a reason. They will respond, we will have to be ready.

Like Tanny said after game 1, enjoy this win for 5 mins, and get on to the next one.

Great win fellas, you guys are making us proud!

I don't think Berube will allow the team to become complacent.

Depth and goaltending were both impacted by cap allocation, but it didn't help having an idiot GM who constantly brought in the wrong types of players as well while letting useful players go.

I am specifically referring to the cap allocation associated with the core 4. Some folks have noted that this team can never be successful with that much cap locked up in those players - and that we’d have to let some of them loose to be a contender. We are a contender, and to your point, the issue was clearly coaching/system and player personnel with the remaining cap.

I guess we're just different in that sense. Don't think I will understand your perspective lol. I didn't enjoy watching the Leafs the most growing up, more so enjoyed teams like the Sharks, Tampa, Ducks, Canucks but couldn't cheer for them as my first choice today
