Martin Madden, from the Anaheim Ducks. Big scouting background but has learned from one of the best in Bob Murray down there and his scouting record is very impressive. Not a lot of managerial experience. Basically Mark Hunter but with NHL track record.

Jeff Gorton. Decent resume with the Rangers but his tenure with them was short though. His trading/signing history is decently impressive. Questionable drafting/development, but that could be other issues in play. Probably the most favorable GM replacement if there is one made.

Chris MacFarland seems like a good candidate. Assistant with the Avs. I don't know much about him. Avs aren't exactly huge winners though I guess?

Scott Mellanby seems to be keep moving up in front offices, now assistant GM in MTL. An ex-NHLer with a lot of experience, so perhaps this is the kind of GM you need instead of purely management experience.

Lawrence Gilman could be ok as an interim. Hasn't done much since his Vancouver days. Marlies GM... but not much to go on. Doesn't seem to really fit.

Mike Gillis would be very weird and I don't understand why anyone would want that. Zero experience since 2014 and it was awful when he was there. I do not understand at all.

Dean Lombardi would be... painful.

I'm always very nervous about hiring long-time Assistant GMs, especially if they are older guys. They typically rarely ever work out. See -- Paul Fenton. I have ZERO interest in Mike Futa for that reason... Zero.

What happened to Jeff Gorton? Why did they fire him?

"The predominant reports indicate that team owner James Dolan was simply unhappy with the team's production in 2020-21, missing out on the Stanley Cup playoffs with just three games left."

"Others say that Davidson and Gorton distancing themselves from the Rangers' controversial statement on Tuesday, calling for the head of NHL Player Safety George Parros' resignation, ultimately led to the firing."

Gorton got that team Panarin, Zibanejad, Fox and Trouba as top assets in his short time there. They obviously had a few mishaps though, but it was a young young team when he got fired and set them up with a lot of top talent.

Why did the Rangers fire John Davidson and Jeff Gorton? Production may be reason behind shocking move

The problem with the Gorton tenure was it started off with high promise but things seemed to stagnate, especially with some prospect development.

Still, would be worth considering if it came to it

I want to say Bill Zito but he won't be available. The work he's done in Florida has been exactly what you'd think an analytics heavy GM of the future would pull off, grabbing a bunch of misfits and cast offs and they all seem to pan out. He turned the Panthers from a typically thin team with a good young underachieving core and put them right on the map.

Or maybe Jeff Gorton. He rebuilt the Rangers pretty quickly before James Dolan came in and changed course.

If you're going to go poach someone, back up the dump truck to get Doug Armstrong from St-Louis.

That man created so much consistency in St-Louis. Not many bad seasons and so many huge trade steals, drafts and signings.

I don't understand at all this fascination with Mike Gillis. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
First question, can he be worse than Dubas?
Second question, he done some great stuff with the Nucks. I think at one time the Nucks was a talented team but couldn’t play consistently like the current Leafs.
Don’t see how his exp can’t help the current Leafs.

What if Matthews told upper management that he will 100% be re-signing with the Leafs as long as Dubas stays GM?

Yes.... Oh yes he can. He can absolutely do much much worse.

He did great stuff with the Canucks? No... he didn't. Was it ok? Sure... but great? And he certainly hasn't done anything in the NHL in any capacity since 2014.

There are so many people to interview or look at, but we want the guy that did ok 7 to 10 years ago but nothing since?

Dubas is still better than the vast majority of options out there. Eric Tulsky would be an interesting one though

A decent chunk of this fanbase explodes at the thought process of Dubas

They wouldn’t be able to comprehend Tulsky lol

Unfortunately when Dubas is fired, the best case scenario will be someone like Jeff Gorton.

Instead we’ll get someone like Jim Ruthorford who will trade Nick Robertson for Ryan Reaves

I don't think this team could handle Eric Tulsky... especially not peeps around here.
I get why at first glance people may not be thrilled, but I think there's a pretty big difference in his approach to analytics and what Dubas does. Carolina has had more success than the Leafs, and a lot of it is thanks to him

Rutherford has cups... he knows what he's doing.

I can't wait to read that over and over again while signing Erik Gudbranson for 5 years.
