I think an extended Dan Girardi would be the right choice.

C- Girardi
A- Staal
A- Richards (Nash if there's a buyout)

Going off of my previous post: While he isn't even on the list if Cally is moved, J.T. Miller has future captain material written all over him. Even though his personality is a bit rough around the edges, he has natural confidence in spades. And it seems genuine as well, not the put upon confidence like Dubinsky has.

Kid needs to learn to slow down in his interviews and relax. Its like he is in a race to babble as many hockey platitudes as he can.

Buffalo is allegedly willing to give him 7 years, 6 million per for 42 total. 6 million is slightly below the amount i think he deserves. I think he deserves around 6.25. 7 years however is always a push. 5 is ideal. but id do 6.

However this is your captain. Make it work.

I think it gets solved.

First of all $6.25M? Considering that Alex Steen got $5.8M that is a ludicrous number.

Second of all: Even though he may (may) be worth that to some team, he sure isn't worth that to the Rangers. He has never been more than a 2nd/3rd line tweener 5v5 and considering that he has lost his place on the PP where he holds most of his value, his value to the Rangers isn't anywhere near $6.25M.

Honestly, considering his current role on the team I'd say he is slightly overpaid on his current deal. Callahan is the epitome of a luxury player on this Rangers team - i.e. a player that isn't used to his full potential because there are better players blocking him in the lineup.

I know he is the captain, but trading him is basically the only option here. I'm even inclined to let him walk if we can't trade him somehow before the deadline. He and the team grew apart, it is time to let go.

McD, he's a leader, plays a ton, makes game changing plays, and he'll be around for the long term. I could see him only playing for the Rangers his entire career.

hearing AV talk about staal recently i think he'll definitely be the guy

A - Staal
A - Girardi
A - McD (assuming Richie is bought out)

No. 18 will likely emerge as the "official leader" / captain.

I think people saying Girardi are a little crazy, how does the guy with the 3rd a surpass Staal? Remember, that before Cally emerged, the talk was about how Staal would be captain someday.

Agreed, Staal sounds like captain material from AV's perspective:

“The one thing with Marc, he’s a real good person,” coach Alain Vigneault said Friday night prior to the fifth and final regular-season matchup of the Rangers and Islanders at the Garden. “When he talks, he looks you in the eye, always makes a lot of sense. I always know that he’s going to put his best foot forward. He’s thinking about the team all the time, and I’ve got a lot of time for players like that.”

C- Staal (Making him Captain may also give him incentive to stay)
A- Girardi/McD (depending on if Girardi is re-signed)
A- Stepan

I could also see the organization being weary about giving Staal the C if they think he may leave for Carolina. Doesn't look good if you have two of your Captains leave/traded in two years.

I'm sure there would be some discussion of this prior to naming him.

The case for McDonagh.... Kyle Turris thinks highly of him:

PREPARE FOR MCDONAGH’S STAR TO RISE
McDonagh, the Rangers’ top defenseman, was one of the first players to lock up a spot on Team USA, and even though he’ll play on the left side behind alternate captain Ryan Suter, the first-time Olympian played in the KHL during last year’s NHL lockout and has the skills and experience to thrive on the international stage. Ottawa Senators forward Kyle Turris, McDonagh’s freshman-year roommate at the University of Wisconsin, told the Daily News recently why his longtime friend deserves the opportunity: “He’s a great person. . . . He’s a great leader. He’s someone people should look up to and follow. He works hard, and he’s dedicated. He doesn’t cut corners. He does everything for the guys and the team first. In the room he isn’t loud, but when he talks, everybody listens because they respect what he does on the ice and who he is.”

I wouldn't be shocked if we picked Moore or Boyle if we're talking about outsiders.

I'm not gonna lie, I'd love Boyle with the C. There are better candidates, but I'd feel really good about Boyle wearing the letter.

Who Will be Our New Captain?/Thank you, Callahan!

Cally's gone. Who wears the C? Or do we go with three A's until a captain emerges?

I didn't edit the title but thank you Callahan indeed. Always worked hard, that was never in question. I was against signing him to anything even remotely close to his demands, but I hope that whomever he ends up with after this season works out well. Best of luck Cally.
