Gallant.

He coaches a physical tough brand of hockey, he demands the most out of his players. Florida firing him was the most random thing ever, and him being fired now was just the GM saving his own ass and scapegoating him. I think he's exactly what this team needs, he coaches similar to Brindamour, they demand physicality and intensity from everybody.
He might have a 2-3 year shelf life but that might be enough to get this core over the hump.

You'll win a Matthews or Marner trade by getting someone back who actually cares about winning.

This is 7 years running now that these 2 just decide they don't wanna play hockey anymore and just mail it in.

And who is this magical player going to be?

If your only criteria is "somebody that cares about winning." which means jack shit because you don't get to the NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL, whatever it is if you don't care about winning.

But if that's your only standard let's trade them both for Wayne Simmonds clones, because I assure you NOBODY cares about winningmore than he does, I truly believe that, I believe Wayne Simmonds would sacrifice just about ANYTHING to win.

Now obviously that's ridiculous but that's my point you can care about winning all you want, you can be willing to die if it means you win, Wayne Simmonds might be that guy.

But if you aren't as good, you aren't as good and you aren't winning regardless of the sacrifice you are willing to make.

You'd have to remove the GM and many of the players to change the brand that drastically.
Assuming they lose this series, I'd get rid of absolutely everyone. You can't just keep running it back. Shanny/Dubas/Keefe.

I feel like the Capitals organization is the most comparable to where we are. Star talent that never got it done, they moved some core pieces but held on to OV/Backstrom and rebuilt around them. New GM and new coach.

Florida won the President's trophy last year and were embarrassed by Tampa in round #2. Did they run it back ?? No they fired their coach and traded for "somebody that cares about winning.". A year later, they are one game away from eliminating the top 2 seeds from the Atlantic.

Wanted to add another point to this comment.

For the longest time the narrative about Ovechkin was that he simply doesn't give a f***. He just wants to score goals, he doesn't want to commit to his team or play defence. The narrative about Backstrom was that he was too soft. Sound familiar ?

The right coach/gm and the right surrounding pieces and culture can change this teams trajectory.

Have you not read the title of this thread? I'm all for firing the coach, I've been driving that train for 2 years now.

I'm all for big changes but if You're coming at me with "trade Matthews and Marner." you better also be coming with an answer to the question how does that make you better?

Too much baggage , Toronto media will eat him alive (rightfully so).

Let it go.

Q is the best coach available. Q should be the guy.

11mm for Marner can be split up into 3 players who contribute. That is a better team, and Marner sitting on the bench last game would have also made Toronto a better team.

So we just need someone that wants out of their team and move to another country and get lucky like Florida did. Should be easy right?
Is that the only option for finding winners and did Florida get lucky or were they just smarter than everybody else? I mean they also traded for the villian Bennett when he wanted out of Calgary. Were they lucky then or should they have traded for Foligno instead ?

You aren't firing Keefe for the sake of firing Keefe, you are firing Keefe because it's years overdue.

The man should have been fired after he blew a 3-1 series lead to Montreal.

Or about 3 seconds after he talked about "respect in the handshake line."

That was the most pathetic thing I have heard a coach say, and that's ANY Coach, in ANY sport.

Then there was earlier this season when instead of telling the media to go f*** themselves which is what he should have done, he walked back his comments like a gutless coward, because that is what he is, and always has been.

I call people like him "bitch boys."

He is a bitch boy, and short of a miracle come back he's got to go.
Yep, these guys quit on Babcock because he was too mean, forcing him out. And when Keefe apologized like a coward for being mean and Marner crying about it, the boys knew they had the room and the control for their little country club

His silence led to a underager being sexually assaulted. I don’t think you can let that go in Toronto’s media market.
The league has moved on, you should too. Its not healthy.

The league has all but said a request to reinstate him will be granted.

Well Florida got lucky. We would need to as well.
I'm down for trading anyone off our core, but we have to make sure we hit on it or we will be just setting ourselves back even more. Right now, that we know, there isn't anyone out there yet.

100%.

Wasn't he a big disappointment last year? (really every year until this one)
Was he ?? Perhaps if Markstrom did not forget how to play goal, they would have gone farther.

Yea, that is more than likely true. As you say rightfully so, unfortunate as well.

If not Q... I think we need a coach with a not so soft touch. I get that today's player is different (see Calgary Flames & NY Rangers), but there has to be some sort of balance. I feel we are too far on the 'participation trophy' side.

he'll take you far, possibly into the conference finals

Then the team will turn on him or the city. Either way, we'll go to the conference finals

Thought you were referring to playoffs stats.
Leafs already have guys with big regular season numbers which is proving to not mean very much once the post season begins.

Are/Were the Leafs even looking to be involved in any chance to improve the dynamic for the playoffs or become harder to play against while still be skilled?
Or did they just say, these 4 will win because.
They kept losing every year doing the same and are on the verge of getting swept but, you know, because.

There were many of us that wanted Bennett, big miss there IMO.

This years big miss was Ekholm, IMO.
