Who should be the captain next year?

I think they will end up giving it to Matthews. I feel like they've known this since they day one when they drafted him, but they have been holding off as to not put a ton of pressure on him. He was drafted to be the "savior' of our franchise essentially, and so they will probably give it to him for symbolic reasons, and possibly to keep him happy.

However I think JT would be the best captain. He's older, and has experience already. Good at interviews as well. He seems to me like he's also the definition of "lead by example". He just puts his head down and brings it, almost every game. I loved watching him work his ass off getting in the dirty areas. He works hard more consistently than Matthews or Marner and I really believe you need a leader who does that, especially for a super young and talented team like ours.

If Rielly takes a discount on his next contract easily him I highly doubt he would though. I would give it to Rielly as he's the D man most minutes on the Ice, maybe if you give him sugar like the C love he may want do the Captain thing and take a pay cut. Our next best TJ on experience and tell/just ask him if he's cool with giving it to Mathews in a few years would be my next pick. Then most probably as Rielly won't take a sweet heartdeal and we will have to move contracts to re sign him well worth it. Can be the A man for life. TJ can have some A too. Clearly leafs have some options and opinions on who they want to give it too and if they are ready to receive it or not (in there mind). As most players take the honour and don't turn it down when given such a proposition.

In minor hockey the coach usually picks the C.

A good player with consistent effort on and off the ice is the criteria I would use. Someone who can communicate player's needs to management and vice versa. Experience is an asset.

With that criteria, Tavares should be captain. I'm sure Babcock likes Tavares.

I dont think Matthews cares. He got paid.
